Omnibus Edition Of Special Poetry Issue: Boundaries, Borders, And Their Dissolution, Steven B. Katz

Survive & Thrive: A Journal for Medical Humanities and Narrative as Medicine

"Issues, crises, questions concerning boundaries and borders press on all sides. Throughout human history. In fact, one might see, as in geography, that boundaries and borders define human history—delineating populations, shifting coalitions and allegiances, the innumerable conflicts over them, the atrocities committed because of them, and the fate of the people within them, outside them, and attempting to cross them." From the Preface, this is the general theme of this omnibus edition of the Special Poetry Issue (Vol 9 Iss 2), Boundaries, Borders and their Dissolution. This omnibus edition contains the entirety of Vol 9.2 in one complete file so …

Optimal Joint Angles Of A Free Throw Shot In Ncaa Division Ii Women's Collegiate Basketball Players, Matelyn Peplinski May 2024

Optimal Joint Angles Of A Free Throw Shot In Ncaa Division Ii Women's Collegiate Basketball Players, Matelyn Peplinski

Culminating Projects in Kinesiology

The purpose of the present study was to analyze the free throw shooting form of NCAA Division II women’s basketball collegiate athletes. Joint angles of the wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle were assessed in the sagittal plane to identify differences between proficient (³ 80%) and non-proficient (< 80%) shooters, along with differences between made and missed free throw shots. Fourteen healthy athletes (19.9 ± 1.5 yrs.) completed four sessions of 25 free throw attempts for a total of 100 attempts per athlete and video data on each of the six joint angles was examined in both the preparation and follow-through phases. Proficient (³ 80%) free throw shooters had more hip flexion, along with less wrist extension, elbow flexion, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion than non-proficient (< 80%) shooters in the preparation phase. Proficient shooters also have more hip extension, and less wrist flexion, elbow extension, knee extension, and plantarflexion than non-proficient shooters in the follow-through phase. Greater shoulder extension at the preparation phase was found to be significant (p £ 0.014), and less knee extension at the follow-through phase approached significance (p £ 0.064) between made and missed free throw shots in this population. Results from this study have potential to be applied to coaching cues and form correction at the free throw line in basketball athletes.

Towards A Comprehensive Understanding: An Inquiry On Generative Ai, Learning Inequalities And Civic Responsibility., Greici Alles

Culminating Projects in English

Artificial Intelligence has been around for quite some time, but recently, it has taken impressive leaps in its capability to revolutionize human-machine interaction. Naturally, discussions on its societal impact are becoming more prominent. Generative AI tools have a unique capability of interacting with people that no other technology had before. Within academia, the discussion of how AI tools are to be implemented in learning classrooms are also getting traction, with a major concern of preserving academic integrity. Historically, diverse students have faced many challenges of inequality in classrooms and theorists like Paulo Freire and Sonia Nieto have long argued for …

Auden In-Between, Sidney White May 2024

Auden In-Between, Sidney White

Culminating Projects in English

W.H. Auden consistently communicated a sense of “in-betweenness” in his writing, as a way of getting at his perceived truth about the modern experience of existence. He felt that modernity lacked a solid foundation in morals or philosophy. He sought security and stability; he sought a foundation. His poetic work throughout the course of his career reflects both his need to be true to the “in-betweenness” of life and his search for foundational concepts and security.

Sacred And Perishable Country Of Want: Poems, Carissa Natalia Baconguis

Culminating Projects in English

This poetry collection discusses the body as a medium of horror, and how these horrors can continue to explore the intersections of cultural identity, gender, queerness, sexuality, and trauma. This project is divided into two parts. The first part of the project is an academic preface which focuses on dissecting how the body as a central image can be used in exploring how the presence of an external power or empire can push the transformation of a subject into an inhuman state. The second part is a collection of original poetry. Through this poetry collection, I explore the narrative of …

An Impressionistic Rendering Of The Poetics Of Maya Deren, Agnès Varda And Julia Ducournau: The Power Of The Female Gaze In Poetic And Transgressive Cinema, Olivia Fredrickson

Culminating Projects in English

My thesis consists of the interweaving of analytical discourse and creative work to apprehend and capture the universes of three influential female directors: Maya Deren (1917-1961), Agnes Varda (1928-2019), and Julia Ducournau (1983-Present).

All three of these directors exemplify in their films the complexities and beauties of the female gaze in its sensual, sexual, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions. As a young woman, scholar, and artist myself, the depth and realities depicted by each have inspired my passion for the apprehending, experiencing and appreciating of how the female gaze nourishes and shapes poetic cinema. Therefore, it is not by chance that …

How To Talk So That Doctors Will Listen, M. Shivaun Corry Apr 2024

How To Talk So That Doctors Will Listen, M. Shivaun Corry

Survive & Thrive: A Journal for Medical Humanities and Narrative as Medicine

Doctors interrupt patients after an average of eleven seconds, placing significant restraint on doctor/patient communications. This lack of communication, combined with medical bias, leads to underdiagnosis and undertreatment of groups such as women, racial minorities, obese people, and those with physical and mental disabilities. The article is framed by the case of Brian Sinclair, an Indigenous Canadian who died of an easily treatable condition after being ignored at a Winnipeg E.R. Drawing on the limited studies in medical rhetoric and health communications, the author examines whether patients can do anything to avoid being similarly ignored by medical professionals. The author theorizes that establishing …

Diversity In Undergraduate Research & Scholarship: A First Generation’S Vision, Marzell I. Gray, Jazmyn Gray

Survive & Thrive: A Journal for Medical Humanities and Narrative as Medicine

I am a first-generation, Black college graduate who learned later in my career of the importance of starting research and scholarly work earlier in a career, so you are not playing catch-up. I began an undergraduate research program for diverse undergraduate students with this in mind.

One big challenge includes accessibility at an institution that wants to create more inclusive environments, but may lack the structure, funds, and tools it needs to create this type of environment. The Undergraduate Underrepresented Research Program (UURP) was developed after beginning my newly appointed tenure-track position at a predominantly white institution. I’d hoped to …

Listening To Our Bodies: Adapting Member Checks In Community Workspaces, Ellen A. Ahlness

Survive & Thrive: A Journal for Medical Humanities and Narrative as Medicine

During the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers, scholars, and members of the medical field alike found themselves struggling to balance their regular tasks and projects with the additional physical, mental, and emotional stressors of the epidemic. This paper examines the exploratory efforts of a small virtual workspace group—researchers, public health officials, and graduate students alike—to take a more health- and body-centered approach to their to-do lists and researcher commitments. Participants were driven by a question: what does it look like to structure one’s work time and agenda in a more mentally, emotionally, and physically holistic way? What started out as a purely …

An Acoustic Phonetic Investigation Of Lexical Stress Encoding In Vietnamese-Accented English, Ettien Koffi, David Mason Apr 2024

An Acoustic Phonetic Investigation Of Lexical Stress Encoding In Vietnamese-Accented English, Ettien Koffi, David Mason

Linguistic Portfolios

A psychoacoustic methodology is used to investigate lexical stress encoding by 15 Vietnamese-Accented English (VAE) speakers. In this framework, Just Noticeable Difference (JND) thresholds in F0/pitch, intensity, and duration are used to investigate the strategy that speakers rely on to produce lexical stress. The key finding for VAE speakers is that they rank the three acoustic correlates as follows: F0 (67.61%) > Intensity (54.28%) > Duration (31.42%). According to Nguyen and Ingram (2005) and Nguyen (2017), this hierarchy mirrors the strategy that Vietnamese speakers rely on to encode tone in their native language. Transferring their native prosodic strategy into English affords them …

The Acoustic Phonetic Properties Of The Epenthetic Vowel In Spanish-Accented English, Luis Lopez Apr 2024

The Acoustic Phonetic Properties Of The Epenthetic Vowel In Spanish-Accented English, Luis Lopez

Linguistic Portfolios

The purpose of this research paper is to describe the acoustic phonetic features of the epenthetic vowel inserted by Spanish-accented speakers of English in sC syllable onsets. Numerous studies have examined this issue. Many have identified the epenthetic vowel as [ɛ]. However, its true acoustic phonetic identity has not been established. This is the first study of its kind that relies on acoustic phonetic measurements to examine the epenthetic vowel. Formant correlates (F0, F1, F2, F3, F4), intensity, and duration cues are used in revealing the true properties of this epenthetic vowel. The insights derived from this study also have …

Socio-Acoustic Survey Responses To Infant Cry Samples: Why Intensity In Dba Matters The Most, Ettien Koffi, Benjamin Witts Apr 2024

Socio-Acoustic Survey Responses To Infant Cry Samples: Why Intensity In Dba Matters The Most, Ettien Koffi, Benjamin Witts

Linguistic Portfolios

Infant cry researchers, Fairbrother et al. (2019), Collardeau et al. (2019), Rahman et al. (2023), among others, have reported that crying alone triggers unwanted and intrusive thoughts in some postpartum parents, including thoughts of harming their babies. Barr (2014) states unambiguously that crying is the main trigger of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), also referred to as Abusive Head Trauma (AHT). Yet so far, there is no consensus in academic circles as to which acoustic correlate is responsible for triggering these thoughts or actions. Most work to date is concentrated on F0/pitch, though findings about its influence are conflicting. Meanwhile Koffi …

A Preliminary Exploration Of Methods For Evaluating And Teaching Skills Required For Providing A Culturally Responsive Service, Jolinpreet Kaur Dhami Dec 2023

A Preliminary Exploration Of Methods For Evaluating And Teaching Skills Required For Providing A Culturally Responsive Service, Jolinpreet Kaur Dhami

Culminating Projects in Community Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy

A culturally responsive approach to providing behavior-analytic service emphasizes rapport-building, inclusivity of diverse populations, social validity, respect for individuality, and practitioners' need to reflect on their own cultural biases. Based on behavior-analytic literature, how to measure and evaluate these skills and teach future practitioners remains unclear. Self-evaluations might be a quick, resource-efficient, and suitable tool for the maintenance of skills throughout a practitioner’s career. In this preliminary study, a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment package with self-evaluation on increasing skills related to cultural responsiveness. Emerging results indicate participants consistently scored …

Caregiver Perceptions Of Their Experiences With Early Identification And Support Services For Children With Communication Delay, Ebere Ofem

Culminating Projects in Child and Family Studies

This study explored caregivers' perceptions of their experiences with early identification and support services for children exhibiting communication delays. The research emphasized the significance of early interventions recommended and the quality of interactions between caregivers and their service providers. The foundation of parent-child relationships is pivotal in a child's early developmental years, especially in language acquisition. However, challenges arise when children exhibit communication disabilities, with approximately (20%) of children learning to communicate later than their peers. Early intervention (EI) services, as outlined in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004), offer crucial support to families of children with developmental …

Building Terministic Screens: An Investigation Of The Ncaa’S Communication On Title Ix, Lauren Kirchberg

Culminating Projects in English

Historically, women’s sports have been underrepresented. The sports world has been dominated by male athletics; football, basketball, baseball, and more. It was not until recent years that female athletes received more recognition in media and in organizations, like the NCAA, National Collegiate Athletic Association. The increase in female athletes has led to an increased awareness of gender equity efforts in athletics. The NCAA has a myriad of social media posts, online resources, and more materials highlighting the benefits of Title IX. However, the NCAA continuously leaves out Title IX and protections against sexual harassment. Lack of resources for women’s sports, …

The Effectiveness Of Interdependent Group Contingency In Decreasing Disruptive Behaviors While Increasing Academic Achievement For Students With Or At Risk For Emotional Behavioral Disorder, Jacquline White

Culminating Projects in Special Education

Managing disruptive behaviors of students with emotional and behavioral disorders can be a significant challenge for teachers, impacting academic achievement and instructional time. Research has well-established the negative effects of such behaviors, highlighting the need for effective interventions. Group contingency interventions such as Interdependent Group contingencies, have shown promise in reducing behaviors and the prospect of improving academic performance. Interdependent Group Contingencies involve rewarding students based on their behavior, with positive reinforcement for minimizing inappropriate behaviors, enhancing academic performance, and staying on task. Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of group contingency intervention for students of different ages, including preschoolers. …
