The focus of this Leadership Action Project is to explore how the ethical will can inspire authentic leadership. Authentic Leadership theory is predicated on the growth of self-knowledge and self-awareness in a leader. These twin notions, developed through practical experience and lifelong reflection, inform a leader’s legacy of values, beliefs, and behavior. Due to the immediacy of daily challenges, modern leaders often lack the presence of mind to reflect on their crucible experiences and practical wisdom. Female entrepreneurs are creating businesses faster than the national average, but their average revenues are a quarter of male-owned business revenues. This thesis examines the critical factors that contribute to successful financial growth for female entrepreneurs. After reviewing the existing literature, six female entrepreneurs were interviewed about their financial growth experience. Using a narrative methodology, the author analyzed the stories in light of the literature and defined key success factors for financial growth. Four important characteristics emerged – vision, self-awareness, profitability mindset and confidence – that female entrepreneurs need to succeed during times of rapid growth. Leaders within public libraries must be able to effectively lead their team and organization in an ethical, effective, and enduring manner. One method to obtain leadership skills necessary to lead within a public library is through formal graduate-level coursework. Through a survey of public librarians, interviews, and an analysis of other regional ALA-accredited library science programs, this leadership action project explores how the Library Leadership Certificate offered at St. Catherine University can best be positioned to provide the necessary coursework to enhance leadership knowledge and practice among public librarians.
