"Migration and trade are more prevalent today than ever before in the history of the world. The United States is the recipient of about one-third of the world’s migrants and accounted for a quarter of the world’s output and 13 percent of the world’s trade in 2005. But the global significance of the U.S. economy is slowly declining, and while the effects of migration and trade on the U.S. economy have been examined time and again, questions concerning the impact of migration and trade on development in low-income countries are of growing importance.

Simple, neoclassical economic models predict that prices …

Title Vii’S Protection Against Pay Discrimination: The Impact Of Ledbetter V. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Deborah L. Brake, Joanna L. Grossman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In one of its most controversial decisions in years, the Supreme Court in May issued a 5-4 ruling in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. that severely undercuts the ability of pay discrimination victims to enforce their rights under Title VII, the main federal anti-employment-discrimination statute. In its decision, the Court applied the statute of limitations in a way that ignored the realities of both pay discrimination claims, specifically, and workplace bias more generally. In so doing, it imposed an obstacle that will gravely inhibit the ability of bona fide discrimination victims to assert their rights. This article will …

Gender In Politics, Sheri L. Kunovich, Pamela Paxton, Melanie M. Hughes Aug 2007

Gender In Politics, Sheri L. Kunovich, Pamela Paxton, Melanie M. Hughes

Sociology Research

Women’s political participation and representation vary dramatically within and between countries. We selectively review the literature on gender in politics, focusing on women’s formal political participation.

We discuss both traditional explanations for women’s political participation and representation, such as the supply of women and the demand for women, and newer explanations such as the role of international actors and gender quotas. We also ask whether women are distinctive—does having more women in office make a difference to public policy? Throughout the review we demonstrate that a full understanding of women’s political representation requires both deep knowledge of individual cases such …

Systems Of Distribution And A Sense Of Equity: A Multilevel Analysis Of Meritocratic Attitudes In Post-Industrial Societies, Sheri L. Kunovich, Kazimierz M. Slomczynski

Sociology Research

Meritocratic attitudes are defined as general beliefs that education and its correlates should determine personal economic outcomes. Using the International Social Survey Project (ISSP): Social Inequality Module (1992), we examine both individual-level and country-level determinants of pro-meritocratic attitudes. According to self-interest and rational-action theories, individuals with high educational attainment and high personal income are expected to have strong meritocratic beliefs because meritocracy is in their best interest—they would gain under such a system. At the same time, both modernization and post-industrial theories imply that persons living in countries with a high degree of societal meritocracy hold stronger meritocratic beliefs than …

Social Capital In A Mexican-American Community In Dallas, Texas, Carolyn Smith-Morris Jan 2007

Social Capital In A Mexican-American Community In Dallas, Texas, Carolyn Smith-Morris

Anthropology Research

This article describes a study in which social capital was the focus of introductory ethnographic research. The World Bank’s Social Capital Assessment Tool (SOCAT) ( Grootaert and van Bastelaer 2002) was used to assess social capital in a poor, Hispanic area of a large city in the southern U.S. The findings demonstrate not only the utility of social capital assessment tools for ethnographic work, but the relevance of social capital to anthropological questions. I describe assets and relationships within this community using three proxy indicators of social capital: (1) memberships in local associations and networks; (2) indicators of trust and …

Social Networks And Cross-Cultural Interaction: A New Interpretation Of The Female Terracotta Figurines Of Hellenistic Babylon, Stephanie Langin-Hooper Jan 2007

Social Networks And Cross-Cultural Interaction: A New Interpretation Of The Female Terracotta Figurines Of Hellenistic Babylon, Stephanie Langin-Hooper

Art History Research

In the study of the Hellenistic period in Babylon, cross-cultural interactions between Greeks and native Babylonians have been primarily interpreted using colonialist theories of Hellenisation, domination, and cultural isolation. This paper finds, however, that such theories cannot adequately explain the types of cross-cultural combinations seen in the archaeological record of female Hellenistic Babylonian terracotta figurines. The forms and functions of these terracotta figurines were substantially altered and combined throughout the Hellenistic period, resulting in Greek- Babylonian multicultural figurines as well as figurines that exhibited new features used exclusively in Hellenistic Babylonia. In order to facilitate a greater understanding of the …

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk Jan 2007

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk

eBooks

Jerry Bywaters – Lone Star Printmaker chronicles the printmaking career of Texas regionalist artist Jerry Bywaters (1906 – 1989). In 1935, Bywaters began recording the prints he made, primarily lithographs, when he noted ‘“Gargantua” First litho made (1935)’ on the first page of his print notebook. This study is based on that notebook and places Bywaters’s printmaking career within the context of art developments in Dallas through the 1940s. It includes a catalogue of his prints, information regarding the history of each print, and reproductions of his known illustrations and ephemera.

Bywaters played a major role in establishing the Texas …
