The Hate Factory: A Glimpse Into The Effects Of The Prison Gang Subculture On Non-Violent Offenders, Jackson Fredman
The Hate Factory: A Glimpse Into The Effects Of The Prison Gang Subculture On Non-Violent Offenders, Jackson Fredman
Research Papers
In an effort to ascertain ways to combat the indoctrination of non-violent, low-level offenders into prison gangs, this study looks at a synthesis of previous research on gang management strategies in conjunction with interviews given to a select group of Southern Illinois prison administrators. It is concluded that the best way to keep these vulnerable offenders away from the influence of prison gangs is to quickly separate the two groups as best as possible. This study is admittedly modest in scope, but the findings are couched within current literature looking to determine effective ways to combat the spread of prison …

Natural Resource Management Knows No Bounds: A Case Study Of The Cache River Joint Venture Partnership, Jennifer Ann Behnken
Natural Resource Management Knows No Bounds: A Case Study Of The Cache River Joint Venture Partnership, Jennifer Ann Behnken
Theses
In southern Illinois, multiple state, federal, and private ownerships are implementing various management tactics in the Cache River watershed. Although some aspects are coordinated under the Cache River Joint Venture Partnership (CRJVP), individual agencies and entities retain specific ownership priorities and approaches to management. This case study explores how agency/organizational characteristics and interrelations affect land management decision-making among land managers employed by federal agencies, state agencies, and non-governmental organizations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty-five participants, including land managers, staff members who maintain active participation with on-the-ground activities, and individuals who have worked closely with CRJVP. Triangulation of interview transcriptions, …

Assessing Foreclosure And Crime At Street Segments In Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Blake Richard Christenson
Assessing Foreclosure And Crime At Street Segments In Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Blake Richard Christenson
Theses
Foreclosures are potentially problematic for neighborhood crime rates by providing crime attractors to residential communities. In the past, like many criminogenic features, foreclosures were typically seen as an inner city problem; however, in the wake of the housing market collapse of 2008 precipitated by suspect banking practices, foreclosures were particularly impacting young and new middle class homeowners (i.e., people with little credit history or assets). This study improves upon past research in two areas. First, instead of using large heterogeneous units of analysis (e.g., block groups, tracts, counties), this study uses street blocks. Street blocks, here, are preferred because of …
