Nazi Medical Experimentation: Should The Data Obtained Be Used?, Elizabeth S. Dyal
Honors Theses
Many researchers question whether or not the data obtained from Nazi medical experiments should be used. This paper examines which experiments were conducted, the data that was found, and the ethical questions related to using this data. Beyond the ethical questions, this paper also determines if the data can be used due to the way the experiments were conducted.

Social Work Students' Perceptions Of Educational Needs And Readiness To Work With Clients Who Are Gay Or Lesbian, Timothy L. Rice
Honors Theses
While research has increased regarding social work students' preparedness for diverse clients, there are few examinations of the readiness students feel regarding clients from the gay and lesbian community. In addition, while social work ethics and curriculum guidelines encourage the inclusion of this population, some observations would indicate that minimal efforts are being made to educate social work students regarding the lesbian and gay community. Students in an entry-level social work course as well as students from a senior-level social work course were surveyed regarding their perceived attitude, knowledge, and skills relative to gay and lesbian clients. Initially, results indicated …
Experimental Analysis Of Metabolic Adaptation Of Cottus Carolinae In Response To Photoperiod And Food Availability, Linda L. Brison
Experimental Analysis Of Metabolic Adaptation Of Cottus Carolinae In Response To Photoperiod And Food Availability, Linda L. Brison
Honors Theses
Epigean (surface) and hypogean (cave) habitats differ significantly, thereby influencing organisms that inhabit these environments in varying ways. As organisms move from surface to cave environments, they. adapt to cave conditions: constant darkness, relatively constant temperatures year-round, low food availability, and high humidity. Fish adjusted to cave life often experience reductions in pigmentation, eye size, and metabolic rate. Metabolism is, in general, influenced by temperature, seasonal• • changes, photoperiod, and food availability. The objective of this research was to understand the alteration of metabolic rate in laboratory acclimated Cottus carolinae (banded sculpin) in response to photoperiod and food availability.

Play Behavior In Infant Western Lowland Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla) At The Lincoln Park Zoo, Suma Mallavarapu
Honors Theses
An ethological investigation was made on a group of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago. Focal animal sampling and all-occurrences sampling were used to collect data during the months of June and July 2000. Qualitative observations were made of the general behavioral patterns of the group, which included feeding and drinking behavior, resting, sleeping, nest construction, grooming behavior, group behavior, dominance hierarchies, zoo-keeper and public oriented behavior, and behavior in novel stimuli situations. Except for female dominance hierarchies, all behavioral patterns were found to be similar to those reported for feral gorillas. …

Influence Of Family Environment On Self-Esteem And Hostility, Angie D. Weber
Influence Of Family Environment On Self-Esteem And Hostility, Angie D. Weber
Honors Theses
This study examines the influence of abusive/nonsupportive and loving/supportive parental behaviors on college students' self-esteem, hostility, and personality traits. Concerns of psychological maltreatment arise because it can restrict children in achieving their full potential as they approach adulthood (Garrison, 1987). It was hypothesized that those who report more emotional abuse would also exhibit lower self esteem, lower agreeableness, (i.e. greater hostility and interpersonal distrust) and greater neuroticism than their more fortunate peers. The participants involved in this study were 63 undergraduate psychology students attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. They volunteered for extra credit in an introductory psychology course or …
