Relation Between Time Perspective And Delay Discounting: A Literature Review, Ursina Teuscher, Suzanne H. Mitchell Oct 2011

Relation Between Time Perspective And Delay Discounting: A Literature Review, Ursina Teuscher, Suzanne H. Mitchell

The Psychological Record

In this article, we examine the relation between delay discounting and future time perspective by reviewing how these concepts have been measured and quantified in order to assess their conceptual similarities. The extent to which the different measures are empirically related is reviewed by describing studies that have assessed both constructs and by comparing the variables that have been associated with variations in delay discounting and in time horizon. We suggest that both steep delay discounting and a short future time perspective are associated with a range of problematic and health-damaging behaviors, such as addictive disorders, risky behavior, poor school …

Contexts And Individual Differences As Influences On Consumers’ Delay Discounting, Gordon R. Foxall, John R. Doyle, Mirella Yani-De-Soriano, Victoria K. Wells Oct 2011

Contexts And Individual Differences As Influences On Consumers’ Delay Discounting, Gordon R. Foxall, John R. Doyle, Mirella Yani-De-Soriano, Victoria K. Wells

The Psychological Record

Delay discounting is often considered a universal feature of human choice behavior, but there is controversy over whether it is an individual difference that reflects an underlying psychological trait or a domain-specific behavior. Trait influence on discounting would manifest in (a) highly correlated discount rates for all decisions, regardless of context, and (b) the reflection of discounting behavior in psychometric measures of individual difference. We examined these propositions for consumers making hypothetical decisions with respect to financial returns, health outcomes, and vacation alternatives. Questionnaires were employed to assess discounting rates, and respondents’ (N = 74) cognitive styles were measured by …

Beyond The Shadow Of A Trait: Understanding Discounting Through Item-Level Analysis Of Personality Scales, Shawn R. Charlton, Bradley D. Gossett, Veda A. Charlton Oct 2011

Beyond The Shadow Of A Trait: Understanding Discounting Through Item-Level Analysis Of Personality Scales, Shawn R. Charlton, Bradley D. Gossett, Veda A. Charlton

The Psychological Record

Temporal discounting, the loss in perceived value associated with delayed outcomes, correlates with a number of personality measures, suggesting that an item-level analysis of trait measures might provide a more detailed understanding of discounting. The current report details two studies that investigate the utility of such an item-level analysis. Study 1 demonstrates that discount rates correlate with the overall score as well as with 11 individual items on the Total Self-Control Scale (TSCS). Study 2 demonstrates a correlation between discount rates and the Consideration of Future Consequences (CFC) scale, but not with a measure of general self-efficacy. An item-level analysis …

Discounting Of Various Types Of Rewards By Women With And Without Binge Eating Disorder: Evidence For General Rather Than Specific Differences, Jamie L. Manwaring, Leonard Green, Joel Myerson, Michael J. Strube, Denise E. Wilfley Oct 2011

Discounting Of Various Types Of Rewards By Women With And Without Binge Eating Disorder: Evidence For General Rather Than Specific Differences, Jamie L. Manwaring, Leonard Green, Joel Myerson, Michael J. Strube, Denise E. Wilfley

The Psychological Record

The present study compared the extent to which obese women with binge eating disorder (BED), obese women without BED, and controls discounted delayed and probabilistic money and directly consumable rewards: food, massage time, and preferred sedentary activity. Of special interest was whether the BED group differed from the other groups in terms of their discounting of all three types of directly consumable rewards or only in their discounting of food. Overall, the BED group tended to discount both delayed and probabilistic rewards of all types more steeply than the obese and control groups. Thus, rather than finding differences specific to …

The “Tyranny Of Choice”: Choice Overload As A Possible Instance Of Effort Discounting, Derek D. Reed, Florence D. Digennaro Reed, James Chok, Gary A. Brozyna Oct 2011

The “Tyranny Of Choice”: Choice Overload As A Possible Instance Of Effort Discounting, Derek D. Reed, Florence D. Digennaro Reed, James Chok, Gary A. Brozyna

The Psychological Record

When making a choice, people like to have options, but an emerging literature on “choice overload” suggests that the provision of too many options results in adverse experiences, including a depletion of cognitive resources and postdecision feelings of regret. A strong implication is that individuals should shy away from situations involving too many options. The present study examined whether this expression of choice overload would emerge when human services workers confronted hypothetical scenarios involving choices of treatment strategies. On different trials, the participants indicated preference for single-option, limited-options, and extensive-options scenarios, wherein the number of extensive-options alternatives geometrically increased across …

Delay Discounting And Social Policy Issues, Jeffrey N. Weatherly, Karyn M. Plumm, Adam Derenne Oct 2011

Delay Discounting And Social Policy Issues, Jeffrey N. Weatherly, Karyn M. Plumm, Adam Derenne

The Psychological Record

The present study used a delay discounting framework to study decisions about six social policy issues and one monetary outcome. For outcomes that nearly all participants discounted, social policies were discounted significantly more than money. A similar result was observed when analyzing all outcomes using data only from participants who discounted all outcomes. Factor analyses, however, indicated that discounting of social policies outcomes was not independent of discounting money. When data from nondiscounters were included in the analyses, results indicated that participants placed the most value on money and the least value on expanding legalized abortion. Further, a factor analysis …
