Changes In Vitrinite Reflectance And Liptinite Fluorescence With Increasing Rank In Dispersed Organics In The Illinois Basin And Its Environmental, Economic, And Political Impacts, Kailey Zalucha-Seaman

Honors Theses

Vitrinite reflectance and spectral fluorescence are commonly used together to determine the rank and thermal maturity of shale samples. Although vitrinite is not commonly found in the New Albany Shale, solid bitumen is found in significant amounts; reflectance of solid bitumen provides another method to determine maturity of these samples. The purpose of this study was to compare the vitrinite reflectance and spectral fluorescence of liptinites to determine the thermal maturity of the New Albany Shale, which can benefit those tasked in the industry who determine the oil and gas potential of these source rocks. Establishment of a relationship between …

Optimizing Procedural Tov-112 Ovarian Carcinoma Cell Transfection Via Initial Seeding And Pbabe/Pei Jet Ratio Variations, Cassondra Walker Dec 2017

Optimizing Procedural Tov-112 Ovarian Carcinoma Cell Transfection Via Initial Seeding And Pbabe/Pei Jet Ratio Variations, Cassondra Walker

Honors Theses

Cell transfection is an exemplary tool in protein analysis and examining transcription factor activity. While general procedures are commonly followed, each cell line requires slight differentiation in pBABE/PEI JET ratios and initial cell count for optimal transfection results. This research focusses on determining a successful procedure for TOV-112 carcinoma cells for future work with 2-methoxyestradiol and NFkB. 2-methoxyestradiol is an angiogenesis inhibitor believed to decrease inflammatory processes. NFkB promoter controls the luciferase gene on the MetLuc plasmid and is pro-inflammatory. The objective of this experiment is to modify the variables until successful results at 24 and 48 hours are observed. …

The Evolution Of Policing Tendencies Towards Sex Work In America: Colonial Era To Today, Olivia D. Partlow Jul 2017

The Evolution Of Policing Tendencies Towards Sex Work In America: Colonial Era To Today, Olivia D. Partlow

Honors Theses

Policing tendencies toward sex work has changed tremendously since America was colonized. There are four major time in which policing tendencies differed greatly from each other: the pre-progressive era (colonial period until late 19thCentury), the Progressive Era (late 19th century to the early 20th century), the era of state criminalization (most of the 20th century), and the current era of nascent decriminalization (late 20thcentury to today). Public opinion of sex workers also changed between each era. The current era of policing may be a stepping stone to total decriminalization if public opinion towards …

My Journey To Better Medicine: Healing The Mind-Body Split Through An Integrated Cross-Cultural Model, Harsh Ilapakurthi May 2017

My Journey To Better Medicine: Healing The Mind-Body Split Through An Integrated Cross-Cultural Model, Harsh Ilapakurthi

Honors Theses

As a future medical doctor, I will always see the process of healing through the hybrid consciousness of my Eastern-Hindu upbringing and Western academic and scientific training. The Eastern philosophy of healing has been linked to consciousness and how the powers of human consciousness can affect the body’s healing. The Western perspective of medicine, which has developed as a result of the industrial and scientific revolutions, generally treats the human body as an object. However, this is not to say that Western medicine is flawed. In fact, Western medicine is incredibly effective in certain specialties, but is limited by the …

Medical Marijuana In America And Illinois: Examining The Viability, Adoption Rates, Quality Control, Products, Patient Numbers, And Allowable Conditions, Molly M. Clark May 2017

Medical Marijuana In America And Illinois: Examining The Viability, Adoption Rates, Quality Control, Products, Patient Numbers, And Allowable Conditions, Molly M. Clark

Honors Theses

Medical marijuana has become increasingly popular in the United States. However, it has been around for as long as the art of writing has. Written records of marijuana being used medically have dated back to 2900 B.C. Many states have taken to legalizing the usage of medical marijuana recently, starting in 1996. There are now 28 states that have passed medical marijuana laws, as well as the District of Columbia. Citizens and lawmakers of many more states are fighting for legalization. Medical marijuana is capable of relieving symptoms of many different diseases and conditions for all ages. This paper explores …

Energy Storage In Layered Mos2/Graphene Composite Supercapacitor Devices, John T. Barron May 2017

Energy Storage In Layered Mos2/Graphene Composite Supercapacitor Devices, John T. Barron

Honors Theses

Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors (EDLCs), also known as supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, have gained much attention in the furthering of research into electronic devices and energy storage. Supercapacitors bridge the “gap” between conventional capacitors and batteries, and are of interest to furthering technology in alternative clean energy, transportation, and other areas of electronics. Nanomaterials are of interest in building these devices due to the presence of very high specific surface areas, unique electrical properties, and/or light-weight and flexible, but strong, structures. The goal of this project was to evaluate electrode materials for supercapacitor devices made from a composite of atomically thin …

The Search For Binding Partners Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Phosphatase Cpp1, Lea Matschke May 2017

The Search For Binding Partners Of The Chlamydia Trachomatis Phosphatase Cpp1, Lea Matschke

Honors Theses

Chlamydia trachomatis is a Gram negative, obligate intracellular bacterium responsible for the most common reportable bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States and the leading infectious cause of preventable blindness worldwide. This pathogen undergoes a unique biphasic developmental cycle where it alternates between its infectious form, termed the elementary body (EB), and its replicative form, termed the reticulate body (RB). We hypothesize that reversible phosphorylation regulates the differentiation of the bacterium between these two forms. In order to study phosphorylation in Chlamydia, it is necessary to examine the role of individual kinases and phosphatases in the organism. My …

Evolution Of Eusociality In Ants Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Michael S. Holm May 2017

Evolution Of Eusociality In Ants Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Michael S. Holm

Honors Theses

Eusociality can be seen in a variety of insect families, including the ants (Formicidae). There is no clear understanding on how it evolved but it is well understood that transitions between social phases must happen. Several theories and hypothesis have been presented but none of them completely encapsulate the whole evolution of eusociality. Several studies on ants focus on different aspects of their evolution in the eusocial context and provide good supporting data. Two major models, Alternate Inclusive Fitness Model and Worker Behavior Model, are good blueprints for future research. As more data is collected and studies were done, more …

Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson May 2017

Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson

Honors Theses

The evolution of museological theory at the Bibliotheque de Sainte-Genevieve marks a transition in the history of collecting during the early modern period. Although the contents of the collection remained largely unchanged from earlier Wunderkammern, the acquisition, display, and organization of artifacts within the cabinet had evolved tremendously by the end of the 17th century and one can begin to see the collection as a predecessor of modern museological methodologies.
