Understanding the composition of camel milk coupled with studying the effects of thermal and non-thermal treatments on its components and bacterial inactivation were the general objectives of this dissertation. In the first study (Chapter 2), the gross composition of camel milk including milk protein, fat, casein, total solids, lactose, ash, and mineral content were analyzed. In addition, fatty acid profile, amino acid profile, protein fractions, and volatile compounds were evaluated as well. Our results revealed that camel milk has its unique nutrients profile. These findings make it easier for the researchers and consumers to understand some of the nutritional attributes …

Tasting Tea, Tasting China: Tearooms And The Everyday Culture In Dalian, Yingkun Hou Sep 2021

Tasting Tea, Tasting China: Tearooms And The Everyday Culture In Dalian, Yingkun Hou

Dissertations

Tea is a beverage that has long been taken to symbolize a key aspect of Chinese tradition and history. However, it is one of many beverages drunk in contemporary China, where in recent times knowledge of wine has come to stand for the West and as a much-desired cultural capital. This dissertation examines everyday tea drinking and tea tasting in Dalian—a northeastern city in Liaoning Province, China. Through ethnography of practices, processes, and interactions taking place in daily events of tea drinking and tasting, this dissertation provides a window into social conflicts, ideas and desires, historical consciousness, and national identity, …

The Necessity And Possibility Of Decolonizing The Understanding Of Chinese-Ness, Tao Zhang Sep 2021

The Necessity And Possibility Of Decolonizing The Understanding Of Chinese-Ness, Tao Zhang

Dissertations

In this dissertation, I explore how crossing national borders has made me aware of the many identity borders that I have crossed as a transnational Chinese, and how I am caught up in identity politics between the “Chinese,” who do not necessarily always identify as “Chinese” in the transnational context. However, as a racialized group in the U.S., transnational Chinese are perceived as a homogeneous population, usually through racially (“Yellow Peril” or “Chinese Virus”) and politically (“Red Scare”) charged lenses measured by Western/U.S. binaristic and hierarchical standards. Therefore, in this research project, I problematize dominant U.S. race logic, i.e., the …

Safe And Brave Spaces: What Comprises A Fruitful Multicultural Supervision Learning Environment?, Monica Becerra Sep 2021

Safe And Brave Spaces: What Comprises A Fruitful Multicultural Supervision Learning Environment?, Monica Becerra

Dissertations

Researchers continue to emphasize the important role supervisors have in creating a safe space for supervisees to effectively navigate and engage in honest multicultural conversations while also addressing potential biases (e.g., Ancis & Marshall, 2010). However, much of the literature on multicultural supervision provides limited guidance on what characteristics define a safe space. The purpose of this study was to examine accounts of counseling psychology graduate students to learn about their understanding and definitions of safe space and brave space within multicultural supervision, using grounded theory methodology (Corbin & Strauss, 2015). Specifically, the purpose of the study was threefold: (a) …

A Behavior Genetic Study Of Activity Levels And Internalizing Problems Across Childhood, Matthew Jamnik Sep 2021

A Behavior Genetic Study Of Activity Levels And Internalizing Problems Across Childhood, Matthew Jamnik

Dissertations

This study used a twin and triplet sample to investigate the influence of preschoolers’ physical activity levels and internalizing problems on subsequent health outcomes (body-mass index, internalizing behavior problems, household health behaviors) in middle childhood. The potential influence of stressors salient in childhood (household chaos, socioeconomic status, stressful life events) on the hypothesized relationship between physical activity and internalizing on health was also explored. A specific focus was placed on examining the underlying genetic and environmental influences of children’s physical activity levels, as assessed by both temperamental (parent-reported) activity levels and observed (in-lab) motor behavior, using a behavioral genetic approach. …

United States’ Domestic Trade And Domestic Migration During 1993 - 2017 : The Role Of Politics, Foreign Import, And Size, Nawaraj Sharma Paudel Sep 2021

United States’ Domestic Trade And Domestic Migration During 1993 - 2017 : The Role Of Politics, Foreign Import, And Size, Nawaraj Sharma Paudel

Dissertations

In the present dissertation, we study the United States’ domestic trade and domesticmigration with special focus on Politics, Foreign Import and Size. This study sheds light on the literature of International Economics, Regional Economics, and Development Economics. In Chapter 1, using a Gravity model for trade between the U.S. states and employing CFS data of the year 1993 - 2017, we find that politically and economically similar states trade more among themselves. We use three different definitions of political similarity based on election outcomes, and they all give similar results. For economic similarities, we follow the literature on Linder’s hypothesis. …

A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Black African International Students’ Racial Identity Development, Maame Coleman Sep 2021

A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Black African International Students’ Racial Identity Development, Maame Coleman

Dissertations

This study was designed to explore how Black African international students develop an understanding of their racial identity within the U.S. context. Although there has been considerable previous theoretical and empirical work examining the process of racial identity development (e.g. Cross, 1971; Sellers et al.1998), which has provided foundation for how we continue to understand how U.S. racial minorities develop their racial identities. However, there is a paucity of research on the racial identity development process of non-U.S. born Black people (Hocoy, 1999; Asante, 2012). Even less is known about the role that intersectionality of other identities plays in the …

Real-Time Congestion Management In Modern Distribution Systems, Meisam Ansari Jun 2021

Real-Time Congestion Management In Modern Distribution Systems, Meisam Ansari

Dissertations

In this research, the problem of real-time congestion management in a modern distribution system with massive active elements such as electric vehicles (EVs), distributed energy resources (DERs), and demand response (DR) is investigated. A novel hierarchical operation and management framework is proposed that can take advantage of the demand side contribution to manage the real-time congestion. There are five main steps in this framework as 1) the aggregators send their demand to the microgrid operators (MGOs), 2) the MGOs send their demand to the distribution system operator (DSO), 3) the DSO detects the congestions and calls the engaged MGOs to …

Resource Management And Application Customization For Hardware Accelerated Systems, Zois Gerasimos Tasoulas Jun 2021

Resource Management And Application Customization For Hardware Accelerated Systems, Zois Gerasimos Tasoulas

Dissertations

Computational demands are continuously increasing, driven by the growing resource demands of applications. At the era of big-data, big-scale applications, and real-time applications, there is an enormous need for quick processing of big amounts of data. To meet these demands, computer systems have shifted towards multi-core solutions. Technology scaling has allowed the incorporation of even larger numbers of transistors and cores into chips. Nevertheless, area constrains, power consumption limitations, and thermal dissipation limit the ability to design and sustain ever increasing chips. To overpassthese limitations, system designers have turned towards the usage of hardware accelerators. These accelerators can take the …

The Making Of The Man’S Man: Stardom And The Cultural Politics Of Neoliberalism In Hindutva India, Soumik Pal Jun 2021

The Making Of The Man’S Man: Stardom And The Cultural Politics Of Neoliberalism In Hindutva India, Soumik Pal

Dissertations

In this dissertation, I trace the contours of state control and capital in India, starting from the 1970s and see how the state’s increasingly centralizing tendencies and authoritarianism, in the service of capital, creates cultures of violence, fatalism, desperation, and ultimately, even more desire for authoritarianism. I study male stardom in Bombay cinema, beginning withAmitabh Bachchan (who was the reigning star in the 1970s and 80s), and following up with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan (who have been successful stars from the early 90s), to understand how changing subjectivities, responding to changing socio-economic reality, were formulated and expressed through …

Flaxseed’S Paradoxical Role In Extending Lifespan And Reproductive Capacity In White Leghorn Laying Hens; And The Effect Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (Pufas) On Lipid Metabolism, Mitochondrial Bioenergetics And E-Cadherin Expression In Laying Hen Ovarian Tumors, William Christopher Weston Jun 2021

Flaxseed’S Paradoxical Role In Extending Lifespan And Reproductive Capacity In White Leghorn Laying Hens; And The Effect Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (Pufas) On Lipid Metabolism, Mitochondrial Bioenergetics And E-Cadherin Expression In Laying Hen Ovarian Tumors, William Christopher Weston

Dissertations

We are the first lab to report the occurrence of a diet-induced transsulfuration (TS) blockade associating with elevated S-adenosylmethionine (i.e. SAM) synthesis, enhanced lifespan and enhanced reproductive capacity, in a vertebrate animal model. In this paradoxical study, we used LC-MS/MS-derived metabolomics data to report the effects of flaxseed (Linum Usitatissimum) on one-carbon metabolism in White Leghorn laying hens (Gallus gallus). Flaxseed contains a vitamin B6-antagonizing molecule called ‘linatine’ that is particularly effective at reducing vitamin B6 levels in small rodents and poultry. Linatine reduces TS flux through its inhibition of the vitamin B6-dependent enzymes cystathionine beta synthase (CBS) and cystathionine …

Automated Algorithmic Machine-To-Machine Negotiation For Lane Changes Performed By Driverless Vehicles At The Edge Of The Internet Of Things, Ellie Lovellette Jun 2021

Automated Algorithmic Machine-To-Machine Negotiation For Lane Changes Performed By Driverless Vehicles At The Edge Of The Internet Of Things, Ellie Lovellette

Dissertations

This dissertation creates and examines algorithmic models for automated machine-to-machine negotiation in localized multi-agent systems at the edge of the Internet of Things. It provides an implementation of two such models for unsupervised resource allocation for the application domain of autonomous vehicle traffic as it pertains to lane changing and speed setting selection. The first part concerns negotiation via abstract argumentation. A general model for the arbitration of conflict based on abstract argumentation is outlined and then applied to a scenario where autonomous vehicles on a multi-lane highway use expert systems in consultation with private objectives to form arguments and …

How Are Women Farmers "Doing" And "Undoing" Gender?: An Exploration Of Women's Gender Practices In Farming, Rebecca J. Tuxhorn Jun 2021

How Are Women Farmers "Doing" And "Undoing" Gender?: An Exploration Of Women's Gender Practices In Farming, Rebecca J. Tuxhorn

Dissertations

The number of women farmers in the US continues to grow even at a time when the number of men farmers is decreasing. But even as women are experiencing growing representation in this historically men-dominated occupation, they are more likely to operate smaller farm operations, own less land, and earn less than men farmers. Additionally, there are barriers to accessing the full farmer identity due to their invisibility in the largely patriarchal structure of agriculture. In this dissertation, I endeavor to learn more about how women farmers navigate the gendered structure of farming, including barriers to accessing occupation-related resources and …
