Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm Annual Progress Report: 2013, Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station and Research Farm Annual Reports

The 2013 season brought some welcome relief from the drought of the previous year. Our yields were much improved, averaging 175 bushel per acre for corn and 50 bu/ac for soybeans . Several new developments were undertaken at the farm in the 2013 season. We established an area for research where grazing is integrated with crop production – so we now have some scope to conduct research looking at the effects of how grazing crop residues, cover crops and annual forages impacts crop productivity and soil health. Working with Chris Hay from the Ag. and Biological Systems Engineering Dept. at …

Playing Cards For Information Literacy: An Active Learning Experiment, Melissa Clark Nov 2013

Playing Cards For Information Literacy: An Active Learning Experiment, Melissa Clark

Library Conference Presentations and Posters

Engaging students during one-shot library instruction sessions requires both creativity and effort. Even when the session is designed for a particular assignment, students’ information needs may not be immediate enough to inspire active participation in class activities. Multiple studies have demonstrated that active learning increases students’ understanding and retention of information, and there is a great deal of literature on the implementation and effectiveness of specific techniques. Much of the recent literature, especially related to library instruction, has focused on technology (e.g. audience response systems, social media, interactive whiteboards, and multimedia presentations) as the primary vehicle for active learning initiatives. …

The Switchgrass Gall Midge (Chilophaga Virgati Gagné) In The Northern Great Plains, Veronica Calles Torrez

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is considered to be a highly promising bioenergy crop. However, little is known about insect pests that impact its utilization for this purpose. The switchgrass gall midge [Chilophaga virgati Gagné (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae)], which was first discovered in 2008 at Brookings, SD, USA, is shown to have a negative impact on biomass and seed yields of switchgrass. Our objectives were to increase knowledge of the biology of the midge by describing its life stages and any parasitoids that have biological control potential. Data collections were made during May to December in 2011 and April to late autumn in …

Land Surface Phenologies And Seasonalities Using Cool Earthlight In Mid-Latitude Croplands, Woubet G. Alemu, G. M. Henebry Oct 2013

Land Surface Phenologies And Seasonalities Using Cool Earthlight In Mid-Latitude Croplands, Woubet G. Alemu, G. M. Henebry

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Phenology deals with timing of biotic phenomena and seasonality concerns temporal patterns of abiotic variables. Studies of land surface phenology (LSP) and land surface seasonality (LSS) have long been limited to visible to near infrared (VNIR) wavelengths, despite degradation by atmospheric effects and solar illumination constraints. Enhanced land surface parameters derived from passive microwave data enable improved temporal monitoring of agricultural land surface dynamics compared to the vegetation index data available from VNIR data. LSPs and LSSs in grain growing regions of the Volga River Basin of Russia and the spring wheat belts of the USA and Canada were characterized …

An Exploratory Study Of Serious Leisure And Lifestyle For Amateur Athletes, Hungling (Stella) Liu, Lowell Caneday, Tyler Tapps

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of this exploratory study was to apply the concept of serious leisure to gain an under-standing of how amateur athletes in a community setting integrate their free-time interests with life-style. A secondary purpose was to investigate which characteristics of serious leisure may identify the participants’ levels of dedication to participation in an adult sport program. The study was con-ducted in the south-central region of the United States in a rural city. A total of 252 pen-and-paper based surveys were collected from softball and volleyball players who enrolled in the community sport program in the fall of 2010. The …

Understanding Proxemics Through Restrooms: A “Hands-Off” Approach To Personal Space And Communication, Joshua Westwick Oct 2013

Understanding Proxemics Through Restrooms: A “Hands-Off” Approach To Personal Space And Communication, Joshua Westwick

Communication Studies Publications

Numerous methods of teaching nonverbal communication have been well documented in the literature. However, some instructors may struggle to create transformative learning experiences for their students. This teaching activity provides a creative and original way for students to discuss nonverbal communication, specifically proxemics, in a fun, engaging, and memorable learning experience. This exercise asks the learners to reflect upon a previous experience with using a public restroom, critically reflect upon that experience individually, engage in classroom discourse about the experience, and take action by being aware of the space and territoriality choices they make. Students have responded positively to the …

The Facts Of Fiction: Information Literacy For Creative Writing, Melissa Clark Sep 2013

The Facts Of Fiction: Information Literacy For Creative Writing, Melissa Clark

Library Conference Presentations and Posters

Research for creative writing is completely different from conventional research: you need to immerse yourself in cultures and thought patterns not your own in order to develop believable characters and depict them, their actions, motivations, and conversations convincingly. A writer needs to be creative in their research and consult a variety of sources, including primary and archival sources, interviews and personal experience, maps and atlases, art and pictures, and sociological or psychological research. How can Librarians teach writers the information literacy skills they need and relate those skills to their immediate research needs? In this session, I will discuss my …

Quantification Of Α-Ketoglutarate Cyanohydrin In Swine Plasma By Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Brendan L. Mitchell, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue Sep 2013

Quantification Of Α-Ketoglutarate Cyanohydrin In Swine Plasma By Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Brendan L. Mitchell, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Determination of exposure to cyanide can be accomplished by direct cyanide analysis or indirectly by analysis of cyanide detoxification products, such as thiocyanate and 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid. A potentially important marker and detoxification product of cyanide exposure, α-ketoglutarate cyanohydrin (α-KgCN), is produced by the reaction of cyanide and α-ketoglutarate. Therefore, an ultra high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method to determine α-KgCN in plasma was developed. Swine plasma was spiked with α-KgCN and α-KgCN-d4 (internal standard) and proteins were precipitated with 1% formic acid in acetonitrile. After centrifugation, the supernatant was dried, reconstituted, separated by reversed phase high performance liquid …

Toxicokinetic Profiles Of Α-Ketoglutarate Cyanohydrin, A Cyanide Detoxification Product, Following Exposure To Potassium Cyanide, Brendan L. Mitchell, Raj K. Bhandari, Vikhyat S. Bebarta, Gary A. Rockwood, Gerry R. Boss, Brian A. Logue

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Poisoning by cyanide can be verified by analysis of the cyanide detoxification product, α-ketoglutarate cyanohydrin (α-KgCN), which is produced from the reaction of cyanide and endogenous α-ketoglutarate. Although α-KgCN can potentially be used to verify cyanide exposure, limited toxicokinetic data in cyanide-poisoned animals are available. We, therefore, studied the toxicokinetics of α-KgCN and compared its behavior to other cyanide metabolites, thiocyanate and 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA), in the plasma of 31 Yorkshire pigs that received KCN (4 mg/mL) intravenously (IV) (0.17 mg/kg/min). α-KgCN concentrations rose rapidly during KCN administration until the onset of apnea, and then decreased over time in all …

Evidence For 20th Century Climate Warming And Wetland Drying In The North American Prairie Pothole Region, Brett A. Werner, W. Carter Johnson, Glenn R. Guntenspergen Sep 2013

Evidence For 20th Century Climate Warming And Wetland Drying In The North American Prairie Pothole Region, Brett A. Werner, W. Carter Johnson, Glenn R. Guntenspergen

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North America is a globally important resource that provides abundant and valuable ecosystem goods and services in the form of biodiversity, groundwater recharge, water purification, flood attenuation, and water and forage for agriculture. Numerous studies have found these wetlands, which number in the millions, to be highly sensitive to climate variability. Here, we compare wetland conditions between two 30-year periods (1946–1975; 1976–2005) using a hindcast simulation approach to determine if recent climate warming in the region has already resulted in changes in wetland condition. Simulations using the WETLANDSCAPE model show that 20th century climate …

Seed Burial Physical Environment Explains Departures From Regional Hydrothermal Model Of Giant Ragweed (Ambrosia Trifida) Seedling Emergence In U.S. Midwest, Adam S. Davis, Sharon Clay, John Cardina, Frank Forcella, John Lundquist, Christy Sprague Sep 2013

Seed Burial Physical Environment Explains Departures From Regional Hydrothermal Model Of Giant Ragweed (Ambrosia Trifida) Seedling Emergence In U.S. Midwest, Adam S. Davis, Sharon Clay, John Cardina, Frank Forcella, John Lundquist, Christy Sprague

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Robust predictions of weed seedling emergence from the soil seedbank are needed to aid weed management. A common seed accession (Illinois) of giant ragweed was buried in replicate experimental gardens over 18 site years in Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, and South Dakota to examine the importance of site and climate variability by year on seedling emergence. In a nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach, we used a flexible sigmoidal function (Weibull) to model giant ragweed cumulative seedling emergence in relation to hydrothermal time accumulated in each site-year. An iterative search method across a range of base temperature (Tb ) and base …

Linking Phenology And Biomass Productivity In South Dakota Mixed-Grass Prairie, Matthew Rigge, Alexander Smart, Bruce Wylie, Tagir Gilmanov, Patricia Johnson Sep 2013

Linking Phenology And Biomass Productivity In South Dakota Mixed-Grass Prairie, Matthew Rigge, Alexander Smart, Bruce Wylie, Tagir Gilmanov, Patricia Johnson

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Assessing the health of rangeland ecosystems based solely on annual biomass production does not fully describe the condition of the plant community; the phenology of production can provide inferences about species composition, successional stage, and grazing impacts. We evaluated the productivity and phenology of western South Dakota mixed-grass prairie in the period from 2000 to 2008 using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The NDVI is based on 250-m spatial resolution Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery. Growing-season NDVI images were integrated weekly to produce time-integrated NDVI (TIN), a proxy of total annual biomass production, and integrated seasonally to …
