Soil Fertility And Management Field Experiments 1959-1960, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station Agronomy Pamphlets (1944-1969)

The 1960 winter wheat crop in South Dakota was second only to the 1958 crop in total bushels; rye production was also above average. State average yields of 27 bushels per acre were estimated for winter wheat, 24 bushels per acre for rye. Yield tests of winter grains are conducted under the auspices of the small grain projects of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station at seven locations in the state; in 1960, information was obtained from every location. The temperatures in April and May were cooler than normal. June, the last half of July, and August were very hot …

Corn And Grain Sorghum Rations With Various Protein Supplements, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley, Gerald E. Poley Nov 1960

Corn And Grain Sorghum Rations With Various Protein Supplements, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley, Gerald E. Poley

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1960

Grain sorghums are being grown more extensively in many parts of South Dakota . The increased use of grain sorghum has been brought about by the development of early maturing, high yielding sorghum varieties. The following experiment was conducted to study the relative values of ground yellow corn and grain sorghums and also to study the value of various protein supplements.

Lysine Supplementation Of Oat Rations For Pigs, Wayne F. Larson, Robert W. Seerley, Richard C. Wahlstrom Nov 1960

Lysine Supplementation Of Oat Rations For Pigs, Wayne F. Larson, Robert W. Seerley, Richard C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1960

Cereal grains contain protein of poor quality because of a deficiency of certain essential amino acids. Lysine is the essential amino acid that is most deficient in most cereal grains. The value of lysine supplementation in swine rations has been studied with rations based largely on corn or sorghum as the cereal grain. Since oats is an important feed crop in South Dakota and contains from 3 to 5 per cent more protein than corn, it is used as a part of many swine rations. Because of its high protein content less protein supplement is included in oat rations. This, …

Effects Of Antibiotics In Swine Rations, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley Nov 1960

Effects Of Antibiotics In Swine Rations, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1960

The use of antibiotics and certain other antibacterial agents in rations for growing swine has been hailed as one of the most important developments in swine nutrition in the last ten years. Although the use of antibiotics has become quite commonplace in swine rations, their continuous use in swine feeds has raised the question as to whether an antibiotic loses some of its effectiveness when fed continuously in a swine feeding program. The object of this experiment was to determine the effect on rate of gain and feed efficiency of some of the newer antibiotics in relation to an antibiotic …

Growth Rate, Feed Efficiency And Feed Consumption Of Swine Fed Erythromycin, Lawrence Carson, Richard C. Wahlstrom Nov 1960

Growth Rate, Feed Efficiency And Feed Consumption Of Swine Fed Erythromycin, Lawrence Carson, Richard C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1960

Experiments conducted at this station and reported at Swine Field Day, 1958, indicated that erythromycin increased gains and improved feed efficiency of growing pigs fed complete mixed rations. In 1959 we reported that erythromycin appeared to be unpalatable when fed in protein supplements. This experiment was conducted to study the effect of erythromycin when included in the protein supplement, the ground corn or in the complete mixed ration. Feed consumption, growth rate and feed efficiency were the criteria used to evaluate this antibiotic.

Feeder Spacer Requirement For Growing-Finishing Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley Nov 1960

Feeder Spacer Requirement For Growing-Finishing Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1960

Due to trends in confinement rearing, automation, increased equipment costs, complete mixed rations and other factors, the feeder space requirement for growing finishing swine needs re-evaluation. Adequate feeder space must be provided for optimum pig performance. Two experiments were designed to evaluate the feeder space requirement during the winter and summer months. Since pigs seldom eat during the heat of the day, especially when fed outside, it is possible that the winter and summer feeder space requirement is different. The winter experiment compared two, three, four, five, and six pigs per feeder space. The summer experiment compared four, five, five …

Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal For Brood Sows Kept Continuosly On Concrete, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley Nov 1960

Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal For Brood Sows Kept Continuosly On Concrete, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Robert W. Seerley

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1960

Confinement feeding of growing-finishing pigs has been increasing at a rapid rate during the past few years. Results of this method of feeding have indicated that pigs grow faster and require only slightly more feed than when fed on pasture. It is only natural then that the question has been asked as to whether brood sows too can be kept in confinement on concrete dry lot during their entire gestation and lactation periods. Improved reproductive performance of sows has been reported when alfalfa meal was included in gestation rations that were not fortified with B vitamins. However, a lack of …

Breeding Hogs With Less Backfat, J.W. Mccarty Nov 1960

Breeding Hogs With Less Backfat, J.W. Mccarty

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1960

A Duroc inbred line has been maintained in the South Dakota Station Swine Breeding project since 1947. Until 1953 selection of breeding animals was based on a performance index as well as the usual attention to individuality, especially body length, underlines and soundness of feet and legs. Beginning with the 1953 season, all pigs were probed to determine live backfat thickness and this information made a part of the selection process.

Spring Wheat Yield Trials South Dakota, 1956-1960, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Nov 1960

Spring Wheat Yield Trials South Dakota, 1956-1960, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station Agronomy Pamphlets (1944-1969)

The 1960 spring eat crop in South Dakota did not quite achieve the promise of a very favorable May and June. Hot, dry weather in early July, which was sustained into August, caused premature ripening of much of the crop, with an attendant reduction of yield and quality. The effect of high temperatures on test weight was very considerable, thus causing a major reduction in market value of much of the crop. Yields and other pertinent information were obtained from all eight experimental locations in the state and are reported here for those varieties of hard red spring wheat and …

Recent Legume Variety Trials In South Dakota, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station Agronomy Pamphlets (1944-1969)

Varietal tests of the more important forage legume species are conducted on a continuing basis as a part of the forage legume breeding project of the Agronomy Department of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. While these tests are rather restricted in size and distribution, they do attempt to provide impartial evaluation of the varieties most apt to be widely used in the state. Test locations are, for the most part, concentrated in the areas where these species are used most extensively or where they are well adapted. Recent results with alfalfa, sweetclover, red clover, and birdsfoot trefoil are included …

Oat Variety Trials In South Dakota 1956 - 1960, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station Agronomy Pamphlets (1944-1969)

The 1960 season was one of the most successful seasons on record for small grain production in South Dakota. Cool temperatures with adequate amounts of rainfall early in the growing season provided the favorable situation which could later be measured by maximum yield of oats among the recommended varieties. Exceptions to this rule in commercial fields were closely linked to poor soil fertility, late planting or in some areas, in erratic rainfall pattern.

South Dakota Population 1950-1960: State And County Population Gains And Losses, Agricultural Experiment Station, South Dakota State College Oct 1960

South Dakota Population 1950-1960: State And County Population Gains And Losses, Agricultural Experiment Station, South Dakota State College

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

The general trends of change in South Dakota's population have continued during the 1950-60 decade. The State's total population was enumerated in 1960 as 680,514 persons, a 4.3% gain during the ten year period. This total gain in the South Dakota population was greater than those which have occurred during each of the previous three decades. This 1950-60 increased total growth has led many South Dakotan's to believe that the rate of net out-migration of South Dakota's population during the 1930’s and 1940's must be slowing down or even decreasing. But to the contrary, South Dakota's net outmigration during the …
