It is the object of this study to look into nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus, and the intermediates of these possible dissociative type reactions.

The Effect Of Varying Dietary Selenium Levels, Selenium Source And Dietary Composition On Growing Swine, Terry B. Goehring Jan 1983

The Effect Of Varying Dietary Selenium Levels, Selenium Source And Dietary Composition On Growing Swine, Terry B. Goehring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the early 1900's, many stockmen in the western Great Plains suffered huge economic losses due to poisoning of their livestock through consumption of seleniferous plant material. Some were forced to discontinue raising livestock entirely and turned to grain farming. However, grain produced on land high in selenium was discounted on the market. Today, this grain marketing problem does not exist to the extent of that of the early 1900's. Selenium has more recently been recognized as an essential micronutrient for several species including swine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved sodium selenite and sodium selenate as supplements …

Demographic Correlations With Exercise Of Self-Care Agency In Women, Susan Marie Hubka Todd Jan 1983

Demographic Correlations With Exercise Of Self-Care Agency In Women, Susan Marie Hubka Todd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The particular health needs of women have not been addressed by health care professionals. There are three reasons for this: first, only the reproductive functions of women are thought to be particularly female health problems, thus producing a severely limited scope of study on women; secondly, all other health problems are measured in terms of normal adult functioning, those norms having been set by research on adult male normalcy or pathology; and lastly, what studies have been individualized to women have been done on women only in illness situations. Dunbar et al illustrated in their comprehensive, nursing literature search the …

Suitability Of Selected Organisms For Monitoring Leachate At A Refuse Disposal Site, John Nathan True Jan 1983

Suitability Of Selected Organisms For Monitoring Leachate At A Refuse Disposal Site, John Nathan True

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

If a landfill is improperly managed or improperly located, contamination of the ground water is possible. Once contaminated, the polluted ground water can travel for great distances with little dispersal or interaction with the soil. Once the ground water is polluted it is very costly, if even possible, to alleviate the problem. Over fifty percent of the people in the United States use ground water as a source for drinking water. With landfills located throughout the U.S. and with over one half of the population drinking ground water, it is not hard to visualize the pollution potential from an improperly …

A Case Study In Establishing An In-House Polling Operation For A South Dakota Political Campaign, Jeff Brockelsby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Evaluating what voters are thinking and deciding how best to communicate with them are critical to a political candidate planning a campaign strategy. Until recently, a candidate relied on his own instincts and those of his advisers to evaluate what people thought about a particular issue or person and to determine the most effective way of presenting campaign messages. Political polling has changed this. Political scientist Paul Van Riper said in Handbook of Practical Politics "the rapidly increasing utilization of social science techniques to help determine political strategy is one of the most important of the recent trends in American …

Historically, Chinese immigration to the United States began in around 1850, even though immigration statistics in the United States showed that forty Chinese had arrived before the news reached Hong Kong that gold had been discovered in California in the spring of 1848. As the gold rush tapered off in the early 1860s, the Chinese soon filled in as general laborers, domestic servants, cooks, and gardeners. However, they found opposition from the white laborers in the mining camps as early as 1852, and they were denied eligibility for citizenship. The need to be aided and protected was great. All of …

Environmental Factors Influencing The Degradation Of Carbofuran, Douglas E. Raynie Jan 1983

Environmental Factors Influencing The Degradation Of Carbofuran, Douglas E. Raynie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As society places a greater emphasis on agricultural production, knowledge of the wise use of farm chemicals becomes increasingly important. Armed with reduced tillage, crop rotation options, remotely sensed data, and other developing technologies, the agriculturalist must have the capacity to properly apply supportive chemicals. Among these chemicals are the pesticides. Thorough knowledge of the breakdown, particularly biologically based degradation, of effective pesticides is lacking in many cases. Carbofuran is a common broad spectrum carbamate insecticide. Because of its wide use there has been a considerable amount of study on the chemical, microbial, and physical factors affecting degradation. Due to …

Numbers And Activity Of Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria Associated With Spring Wheat, Mark W. Dott Jan 1983

Numbers And Activity Of Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria Associated With Spring Wheat, Mark W. Dott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much of the food production in the world today depends on the presence of an adequate supply of nitrogen in the soil. Whether farming methods are simple or intense, nitrogen in usually the primary limiting factor in this production. In order to relieve this limitation, much of the world's agriculture has turned to the commercial manufacture and application of nitrogen fertilizers to increase crop output and to bring new lands into production. The manufacture of nitrogen fertilizer is an energy intensive process requiring large amounts of petroleum. The increasing price of fossil fuels is then passed on in the form …

Yield differences due to soil water …

Market Structure And Conduct Of The South Dakota Beef Industry, Annette Lorraine Clauson Jan 1983

Market Structure And Conduct Of The South Dakota Beef Industry, Annette Lorraine Clauson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the South Dakota livestock producer desires the best price for his product the day it is sold, he may not always receive it. Information about alternative marketing methods and prices being paid at alternative markets is not always available. If available, this information could lead to more efficient marketing. For example, just a one dollar annual increase in market price of livestock would increase the value of commercial slaughter in South Dakota by approximately $8 million/year. An increase like this would not only benefit the livestock producer; but could result in significant impacts on the economic well-being of the …

The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strongly favors land application of sludge as a disposal method and requires communities to consider the application of sewage wastes to land as one of their alternatives to advanced wastewater treatment in order to be eligible for federal funding to improve sewage wastewater treatment facilities. Although use of sewage sludge on the land has definite benefits, several potential problems may develop when applying this method of disposal. One main concern has been the possibility of toxic metal pollution occurring in the application soils. If high concentrations of zinc, copper, lead, cadmium, etc. are present …

Perceptual Regions Of Minnesota, John L. Faundeen Jan 1983

Perceptual Regions Of Minnesota, John L. Faundeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Economists, demographers, politicians, recreationalists, and others have divided the state of Minnesota into many different regions. In so doing, each claim to represent a meaningful division of state districts based upon their own particular viewpoint, need, or bias. Whether these regions are logically derived or merely delineated for purposes of convenience can, however, be questioned. Regardless of how the divisions carne about, they do, to a degree, represent an abstraction of space. Whether or not the average Minnesotan agrees with, or can even relate to, such abstractions is debatable. The way in which residents perceive the state and mentally delineate …

Two subproblems were also investigated. The first subproblem was to determine if the sum of the selected circumferences was a better predictor of body density than when each circumference was used individually as a predictor. The second subproblem was to determine if body density could best be predicted by a linear or curvilinear relationship. Statistical analysis of the data included …

Soybean Root Growth And Water Uptake, V. Rasiah Jan 1983

Soybean Root Growth And Water Uptake, V. Rasiah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rainfall is usually marginal for optimum crop production in the North Central Great Plains. As a result many farmers in this region are installing irrigation systems to supplement rainfall. The most common system installed is the center pivot. However, while this system has a low labor requirement it is costly. Economic reports from South Dakota State University indicate marginal to negative comparisons of irrigated crop production to dryland production. Sprinkler irrigation systems such as side roll, tow lines, hand move, side move with trail lines etc. and surface irrigation depend on root zone soil water storage to extend intervals between …
