Nineteen macroscopic genera were taken from ten sampling stations located throughout the lake. Descriptions are presented for organisms in this group. Diversity of organisms was greatest in the sand substrates, in that all 19 genera were collected. Chironomus spp. (Chironomus plomosus, Chironomus attenuates and six unidentified species) was the most abundant group of organisms and occurred most …

Rapeseed, Sunflower And Soybean Meals As Protein Supplements In Dairy Calf Starters, Paul E. Stake Jan 1971

Rapeseed, Sunflower And Soybean Meals As Protein Supplements In Dairy Calf Starters, Paul E. Stake

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The world need for protein is ever-increasing causing the feed industry to seek new sources of protein supplementation for livestock (17). Urea and other non-protein-nitrogen (NPN) source have received much attention in the past twenty years as protein substitutes, but their use is limited to years as protein substitutes, but their use is limited to functional ruminant animals. Pre-ruminant calves, unable to utilize NPN, need natural protein in their diets. Soybean meal (SBN) has been the common protein supplement in many dry calf meals in the Midwest for several years and has been proven to be an acceptable source of …

Various Forms Of Dehydrated Alfalfa In High-Concentrate Cattle Finishing Diets, Jerry D. Burkhardt Jan 1971

Various Forms Of Dehydrated Alfalfa In High-Concentrate Cattle Finishing Diets, Jerry D. Burkhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Even though growing and finishing beef cattle have been fed satisfactorily on all-concentrate diets, in many instances weight gains have been improved and management problems reduced by including some conventional form of roughage in the diet. The most efficient level of roughage will likely be a variable factor depending upon a number of things including weight and condition of the cattle and. nature of the roughages and concentrates. It is a well-established fact that .as the energy content of the diet increases the rate of gain increases and the feed required per unit of gain decreases. In addition to rate …

The Effects Of Erythropoietin, Dibenzyline, And Iron Dextran On The Hemogram Of Doe And Fetal Rabbits, Eugene Austin Gardner Jan 1971

The Effects Of Erythropoietin, Dibenzyline, And Iron Dextran On The Hemogram Of Doe And Fetal Rabbits, Eugene Austin Gardner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The iron deficiency anemia found particularly in swine has a high incidence in the newborn. The nutrition of the sow inversely affects progression of the anemia. Newborn nutritional status, also, inversely augments the anemic condition. The anemia does not become apparent in the newborn until a few days following parturition. There is a drastic decrease in iron availability with succeeding decreases in normal hemoglobin formation and mature red blood cell formation. An important factor along with these conditions is susceptibility to disease leading to death. A gradual return to normal follows if the newborn survives the anemic period. This condition …

Test Of Various Insecticides As Systemics In Wheat Upon The Army Cutworm, Lavarre Delancy Uhlken

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are many species of cutworms. They vary greatly in population from year to year. The army cutworm, Euxoa auxiliaris (Grote), is very common from the Rockies east to the Great Plains and is occasionally a severe pest to wheat in these areas. Daniels (1964) found that normally, army cutworms feed largely on the upper portions of plants. Where large populations of this cutworm are present, plants are consumed to the ground. After consuming nearly all the vegetation in one areas, cutworms mill migrate by the thousands to adjacent fields. The army cutworm has 1 generation a year, wintering as …

The Relationship Of Porcine Muscle Fiber Size And Number To Management, Meatiness And Quality, Ronald J. Smith Jan 1971

The Relationship Of Porcine Muscle Fiber Size And Number To Management, Meatiness And Quality, Ronald J. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years animal scientists have been striving to find the “foolproof” method foreseeing the desired carcass and consumer characteristics in live animals before they are slaughtered. As a result, several different live animal and carcass evaluation techniques have been developed and tested with slow but encouraging success in some areas. This “never-ending” search has been stimulated by the development of new and more sophisticated research tools and facilities as time advances. Increasing consumer demands for a muscular, trim, high quality meat product makes identification of these desired traits in the live animal and carcass necessary. Thus, the producer, feeder …

A supersonic wind-tunnel has been constructed using an 8 inch by 10 inch single stage jet vacuum ejector with a capacity of handling 0.4 lb/sec air at 4 inches Hg absolute suction pressure. A Toepler Schlieren system with 10-inch diameter parabolic mirrors has been set up for flow pattern visualization. The same apparatus was developed to obtain multi-colored views of the flow pattern. That was accomplished by placing an equilateral prism in front of the light source located at the focal plane of the first parabolic mirror. A spectrum was thus produced at the focal plane of the second parabolic …

An Evaluation By Winter Wheat Of Phosphorus Carriers And The Effect Of Different Carriers On Three Phosphorus Availability Indices, Charles C. Biggar Jan 1971

An Evaluation By Winter Wheat Of Phosphorus Carriers And The Effect Of Different Carriers On Three Phosphorus Availability Indices, Charles C. Biggar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various types of phosphorus fertilizers are being commercially produced and used. Due to the different properties of these phosphate materials, their ability to supply phosphorus may differ among South Dakota soil environments. To provide data for phosphate users it is necessary to evaluate- the.se materials under varying soil and climatic conditions. Soil reaction is commonly used to differentiate conditions within the soil that are important to phosphorus utilization or fixation. Generally, where fixation is high the possibility of utilization of the added phosphorus is low. Acid soils are considered as having a high phosphorus fixing capacity. Alkaline soils are medium …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Shock Wave Stability In Sonic Inlets, Assem A. Fathy Jan 1971

A Theoretical Investigation Of Shock Wave Stability In Sonic Inlets, Assem A. Fathy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A theoretical investigation of the shock wave stability applicable to "sonic" and supersonic inlets is presented. It is assumed that the boundary layer remains attached and that the principal sources of instability are the acoustic wave reflections from the shock wave and the face. The analysis is based on linearized one-dimensional flow theory and involves the solution of the wave equation with variable coefficients. The solution is obtained by series expansion. The results suggest that shock stability is mainly dependent on the shock strength and to a certain extent on the area distribution. For a given geometry, increasing the shock …

A Study Of The Endogenous Electron Donors For Nitrogen Fixation By Cell-Free Extracts Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae M5al (Aerobacter Aerogenes M5al), Elisabeth Yi-Jan Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biological nitrogen fixation, the mechanism of the enzymatic conversion of the inert nitrogen gas into amino acids in the cytoplasm of the microorganism has puzzled many scientists for decades. The recent discovery of some free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria has encouraged the investigation of this mechanism. A big step taken in the rapid elucidation of this mechanism was the first reproducible cell-free nitrogen-fixing system from Clostridium pasteurianum successfully obtained by Carnahan et al. (9) in 1960. In the following decade, reproducible cell-free systems were demonstrated with the strict aerobe, Azotobacter vinelandii (4), facultative anaerobic Bacillus polymyxa (16) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (31) and …

The Chemistry Of Some Unusual Carbodiimides, Donald Melvin Plautz Jan 1971

The Chemistry Of Some Unusual Carbodiimides, Donald Melvin Plautz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several N1-alkyl-N2-(N,N-dialkylamino)carbodiimides, which were found to form dimeric species, were prepared, and the structure of the dimeric species determined. A study of the reaction chemistry of both the monomeric and dimeric carbodiimides led to the conclusion that dimerization occurred via a (π2s + π2a) ground-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism, and that thermal decomposition of the dimeric species occurred via a (π2s +-π2s) excited-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism. Although dialkylphosphoramidates have been shown to be useful intermediates in the preparation of unsaturated organic nitrogen compounds, N-acyl- and N-imino-dialkylphosphorohydrazidates were found to be too unstable, forming trialkylphosphates upon distillation, to be of …

Responses Of Rumen Microflora To Whey Products Added To High-Grain Low-Roughage Rations, Virgil L. Metzger Jan 1971

Responses Of Rumen Microflora To Whey Products Added To High-Grain Low-Roughage Rations, Virgil L. Metzger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many factors present in livestock feeds affect the numbers and types of protozoa and bacteria in the rumen. A small particle size of feed and a fast rate of passage of the feed through the ruminant decreases protozoal numbers. Full feeding of a concentrate ration and an acid pH in the rumen also tend to reduce protozoa numbers. Bacteria numbers tend to increase as the protozoa numbers decrease. Knowledge of rumen microflora population changes on different rations is lacking. It is known that restricted-roughage rations will generally cause lower protozoal numbers. Since whey is an available source of lactose and …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Instantaneous Jockeying In Queues By Simulation, B. Radindranath Jan 1971

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Instantaneous Jockeying In Queues By Simulation, B. Radindranath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In today's world, waiting lines formed by people, machines and other types of units are commonplace. Queues form whenever the current demand for a service exceeds the current capacity to provide that service. In many cases, the interarrival times or service times are not constants, but involve distributions from which the values occur randomly.

A waiting line causes concern when there is an economic value associated with it. A waiting line may have a negative monetary value if units leave without service, or if units have costs as they wait. Idle service facilities may also have a negative monetary value …

Buckling Loads For Partially Embedded Piles, David Allen Wahlstrom Jan 1971

Buckling Loads For Partially Embedded Piles, David Allen Wahlstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Piles are common structural elements used to transmit loads through weak or compressible surface soils to lower, more suitable soil strata. They are relatively small diameter shafts that are forced into the ground. Typical examples of pile utilization can be found at nearly any site where a major structure is being constructed. Many waterfront structures are built on partially embedded piles. In this case, the pile transfers the load of the structure to the lower soil strata and also serves as a column for the portion of the structure above the mud line. Many bridges and buildings are also supported …

The Influence Of Phenobarbital, Diphenylhydantoin, Trimethadione And Ethosuximide On Rat Liver Demethylase Activity, Gerald L. Wannarka Jan 1971

The Influence Of Phenobarbital, Diphenylhydantoin, Trimethadione And Ethosuximide On Rat Liver Demethylase Activity, Gerald L. Wannarka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of the many anti-epileptic agents available, the most commonly used compounds can be divided into four categories: the barbiturates and related drugs, the hydantoins, the oxazolidines and the succinimides. Because of the possibility of concurrent use of the compounds in the treatment of epilepsy, it would be advantageous to have some information concerning the effect that each group has individually on microsomal enzyme systems before therapy in instituted. This information would enable the clinician to more adequately predict drug response thus reducing dosage regimen adjusting time and also possibly reducing the incidence of adverse reactions or interactions. The effect of …
