Effects Of Orally Administered Allopurinol (Hyroxyprazolo 3,4-D Pyrimidine) On Uric Acid, Selected Blood Lipid And Hemogram Parameters In Rabbits, Gary A. Thibodeau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gout is one of the earliest disease entities to be described in medical writings. Hippocrates noted familial distribution patterns and described its classic symptomatology in the 5th century B.C. Empirical treatment employing colchicine was advocated by Alexander of Tralles in the 5th century A.D. A better understanding of the complex association between clinical manifestations of gout and uric acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism has made rational treatment possible only very recently. Ample experimental and clinical data now available show a definite association between disorders of purine metabolism resulting in hyperuricemia and frequent concomitant hyperlipidemia. A high incidence of both …

Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom Jan 1970

Physical Conditioning And Ammonium Carbonate Affecting Blood Ammonium And Swimming Performance Of Dogs, Larry Alan Bjurstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ammonia is produced by the working muscle of exercising mammals and cellular metabolic process of resting mammals. Normally relatively minute blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) levels are present because mammals have efficient systems for excreting ammonia or converting it to non-toxic end products. Impaired or inadequate detoxification process allow elevated BAN levels with excessive ammonia production. Above normal BAN levels produce deleterious effects which are well known to many research fields. When impaired or inadequate detoxification process occur in an exercising mammal, deterioration of performance is manifested in physical exhaustion and fatigue. Mobilization and enhancement of the KrebsHenseleit urea cycle by addition …

An Experiment On The Effects Of Humidity On Screen-Process Stencils, Thomas R. Bresadola Jan 1970

An Experiment On The Effects Of Humidity On Screen-Process Stencils, Thomas R. Bresadola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quality control is management, it is a way of thinking. To function properly, it cannot be isolated in one section of the plant, but rather it must permeate the entire climate of the plant. Management is control through decision making. Decision making requires accurate and complete information, if errors are to be avoided. The quality of the information on which decisions are based determines the quality of the decisions themselves. Quality may be defined by stating what is acceptable, and what is not acceptable. Quality used in this sense varies greatly from plant to plant. The company printing slogans on …

An Eye-Movement Analysis Of Five Ink Colors Printed On Yellow Stock, Robert Charles Clappsy Jan 1970

An Eye-Movement Analysis Of Five Ink Colors Printed On Yellow Stock, Robert Charles Clappsy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of color combinations of print and paper by commercial printers has increased steadily since 1930. The relation of color-of-print to color-of-background is an important factor to be considered in printing because color does effect legibility. The increased use of color emphasizes the need for scientific knowledge concerning the effect on legibility of various color combinations of print and background. Such scientific knowledge demands relevant research in many areas of color printing. This study will try to determine the effects on eye-movements of various ink colors printed on a controlled yellow stock. This information would be useful to printers …

Automatic Irrigation : Sensors And System, Herman G. Hamre Jan 1970

Automatic Irrigation : Sensors And System, Herman G. Hamre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the world in which we live becomes more crowded, the specter of food shortage looms larger. As long as the world population is increasing, the food supply must also be increased to offset predicted shortages. One area under development is the ocean, and federal money is being invested in research on ocean farming techniques. More immediate gain, however, may be obtained by bolstering the already immense capability of the agricultural community. This may be accomplished by increasing the yield of the land under cultivation, or by enabling more land to be cultivated. Irrigation has been used successfully in aiding …

Effect Of Rhythmical Disturbances On Repetitive Assembly Work, Ranganatha Hemmige Jan 1970

Effect Of Rhythmical Disturbances On Repetitive Assembly Work, Ranganatha Hemmige

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of industrial engineering has been traditionally based on the desire to produce more goods for less money. This goal has been accomplished by a variety of methods, including improved methods, monetary incentives, and nonmonetary incentives. In the modern industry all of these may be used. Studies to isolate the effects-of such types of incentives frequently, although not exclusively, have been conducted on highly repetitive tasks. This occurs for a number of reasons: 1. The simple task reduces the variability of the output both in quality and quantity. 2. Any given number of cycles will take less time since …

The Effect Of Sodium Hexametaphosphate On The Palatability Of The Freeze-Dried Chicken, Ngoc Hoa Giang Jan 1970

The Effect Of Sodium Hexametaphosphate On The Palatability Of The Freeze-Dried Chicken, Ngoc Hoa Giang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Freeze-drying has been generally regarded as the mildest method known for drying meats, but even this process has caused undesirable changes in meat quality. The texture of rehydrated freeze-dried meat has been found to be tougher and drier than untreated meats. In addition, the meat may have a "woody" texture. Apparently something has occurred during the freeze-dry process that reduced the water-holding capacity of the meat. This has been reflected in the meat's inability to become fully rehydrated. Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHNP) has been used successfully to increase the water-holding capacity of meat and fowl. No study has been conducted to …

The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Family life education includes the total education for living in families. The main emphasis of all home economics or homemaking education is life as it is lived within the home and family. Some aspects of home economics are usually included in the curriculum at all age levels from early childhood through secondary education. Family life in America has changed over the years. Such factors as family mobility, a greater amount of leisure time, an increase in early marriages, and more mothers employed outside the home indicate the need for education in family living. Moreover, currently fewer youngsters learn about homemaking …

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The name "epizootic hemorrhagic disease" (EHD) of deer was first given by Shope et al. in 1955 because of the occurrence of the hemorrhagic disease in large epizootic_ proportions and because of its pathological features. It was also determined by them that the causative agent for the disease is a virus. Difficulties in studying the causative agent have been encountered because no host system other than the deer itself was available to support replication or detect the virus. However, isolation of the New Jersey strain of EHD virus was accomplished by Mettler et al. in 1962 using newborn mice and …

Reliability Study Of A Modified Los Angeles Rattler Test, Joe H. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ever constant demand for more and better roads and concrete structures has forced the engineer to seek construction materials with better physical properties. Because of this demand, our nation's once vast supply of high quality, easily accessible natural resources is becoming depleted. One such natural resource is mineral aggregates. These mineral aggregates may be classified as the smaller rocks composed of one or more minerals. The money expended for the procurement and placement of mineral aggregates for highway use represents approximately one-fourth of the total highway cost. Because of this large amount of money spent annually for mineral aggregates, …

Both birdsfoot trefoil and teton alfalfa were significantly lower in percent Fraction 1 protein than …

An Economic Analysis Of Selected Irrigation Systems Applicable To The Eastern Missouri Slope Area Of South Dakota, Myron W. Wolff Jan 1970

An Economic Analysis Of Selected Irrigation Systems Applicable To The Eastern Missouri Slope Area Of South Dakota, Myron W. Wolff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years the prospect of irrigation development has captured the minds of farmers, agribusinessmen, and residents of the Eastern Missouri Slope area of South Dakota. The area has shared in the over-all technological advance in agriculture, but agricultural production and incomes have remained highly variable. This variability is generated by inconsistent yields caused by extreme annual fluctuations in the quantity and seasonal distribution of rainfall. Irrigation is the logical solution for stabilizing production and income. In the last decade there has been a major transition from gravity to sprinkler irrigation systems. Economic and physical factors have caused the trend …

An Adaptive Redundancy Reduction Technique, Seon J. Chung Jan 1970

An Adaptive Redundancy Reduction Technique, Seon J. Chung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In telemetry systems, the limited power available from the RF transmitter imposes a constraint on the data transmission rate. For example, a spacecraft’s ability to communicate with a ground receiving station decreases with the square of the distance, and electrical power to operate the system increases with the data transmission rate. To solve this problem, considerable attention has been devoted toward improving the efficiency of telemetry systems by selecting advantageous coding, modulation and reconstruction techniques. One technique which is used to achieve this goal is to design a telemetry system which transmits only the significant information contained in the source …

A Differential Ph Requirement For Extraction Of Stable Polyribosomes From Winter Barley In Relation To Rnase Activity Of The Tissue, Clay G. Johnson Jan 1970

A Differential Ph Requirement For Extraction Of Stable Polyribosomes From Winter Barley In Relation To Rnase Activity Of The Tissue, Clay G. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of a systematic procedure to fractionate cells into functional components is important to many current problems in biological research. Polyribosomes are of considerable interest since it is this cell fraction which is the site of protein synthesis. They are unique structures in that they are reported to contain the transcribed genetic information in the form of messenger RNA (mRNA) which functions as the binding site for ribosomes in the decoding process. A satisfactory isolation of polyribosomes provides an opportunity to analyze the nature of this transcribed genetic message and also determine the extent to which protein synthesis is …

The Influence Of Sodium Phenobarbital On The Hepatic Adenosine Triphosphatase Activity And The Development Of This Enzyme In The Rat, Gerald H. Mettler Jan 1970

The Influence Of Sodium Phenobarbital On The Hepatic Adenosine Triphosphatase Activity And The Development Of This Enzyme In The Rat, Gerald H. Mettler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was two-fold: {A) To obtain information concerning the influence of sodium phenobarbital on the hepatic microsomal enzyme system which reduces adenosine triphosphate in adult male and female rats; (B) To measure the development of hepatic adenosine triphosphatase activity of newborn and infant rats. Intraperitoneal administration of 30 to 150 mgm./Kq. of sodium phenobarbital for three to five days to adult male and female rats did not increase adenosine triphosphatase activity. These findings are rather pertinent since many enzyme systems are stimulated by much lower dosage levels of enzyme inducers, such as sodium Phenobarbital, over a …

The Origin And Development Of Sunday Competition Between The Hartford Courant And The Hartford Times, James M. Neal Jr. Jan 1970

The Origin And Development Of Sunday Competition Between The Hartford Courant And The Hartford Times, James M. Neal Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that the Times was an afternoon paper and the Courant a morning paper, the two were more alike than they were different throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Each newspaper was increasingly influenced by persons not native to New England, but both retained executives with New England roots. They were closely balanced in manpower, they competed vigorously for the same kinds of news, and (after September, 1968) they presented similar Sunday packages. Carl Lindstrom's charge that newspapers were increasingly dominated by the business offices could hardly be applied fairly to either newspaper in Hartford by 1970. The publishers …
