Supplemental Vitamin D In Pig Diets, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal Nov 1976

Supplemental Vitamin D In Pig Diets, Richard C. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

Vitamin D is necessary for absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorus in the body. A deficiency of this vitamin will result in rickets. Most feedstuffs used in swine diets are essentially devoid of vitamin D. The animal can receive the necessary vitamin D if exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Therefore, pigs raised in confinement with no opportunity to be exposed to sunshine need supplemental vitamin D in their diets.

Lysine And Energy Levels In Growing And Finishing Swine Diets, James L. Girard, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom Nov 1976

Lysine And Energy Levels In Growing And Finishing Swine Diets, James L. Girard, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

High feed pices the past few years have stimulated interest in adding fat to swine rations in an attempt to increase feed efficiency and improve rate of gain. Research has shown that, to get maximum utilization of added energy, protein levels in the diet also must be increased to maintain the calorie to protein ratio. In normal corn-soybean meal rations, lysine has been shown to be the first limiting amino acid. the experiment reported here was conducted to determine the lysine levels necessary in diets with and without fat and their effect on feed consumption, feed efficiency and rate of …

Procedures To Evaluate Market Pigs, Dan H. Gee Nov 1976

Procedures To Evaluate Market Pigs, Dan H. Gee

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

For a number of years there has been a growing demand for a uniform system of market hog evaluation. The pork industry wanted a system where the basic figures from production and carcass information could be combined and results obtained for industry comparison. After 2 years of study by the National Pork Producers Council in cooperation with the American Meat Science Association, a new system of market hog evaluation based on percent or pounds of lean muscle in total carcass weight was initiated. The National Pork Producers Council hopes the system will meet the demands of the pork industry for …

Processing Of Oats In Limited Grain Rations For Wintering Calves, L. B. Embry, D. E. Overbay Nov 1976

Processing Of Oats In Limited Grain Rations For Wintering Calves, L. B. Embry, D. E. Overbay

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

Hay fed to appetite along with 5 to 6 lb. of grain is a common ration for growing calves for herd replacements or later feedlot finishing. Feeding could be simplified and costs reduced by feeding grain in the whole form. Studies with corn have often shown some improvement in weight gain and feed efficiency from processing the grain for cattle where the roughage level exceeds about 20% of the dry ration. Sorghum grain, wheat and barley appear to benefit more from processing than does corn grain.

Aspen Material As A Feed Ingredient In Ruminant Rations, L. D. Kamstra, M. Singh, L. B. Embry, L. Peterson Nov 1976

Aspen Material As A Feed Ingredient In Ruminant Rations, L. D. Kamstra, M. Singh, L. B. Embry, L. Peterson

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

Aspen (Populus tremuloides), covering in excess of 58,000 acres in the Black Hills area and over 3 million acres in the Upper Great Lakes area, has not been harvested in sufficient amounts to perpetuate growth. Periodic harvesting is not only necessary to assure an aspen stand but younger trees are needed as a source of food for grouse, deer and other wildlife. Although aspen serves as a source of fiber for paper, lumber, insulation and other industrial uses, it is presently not used for these purposes in the Black Hills region. In all regions where aspen grows whether or not …

Rumesin For Growing And Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry Nov 1976

Rumesin For Growing And Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

Much of the research with feedlot cattle has been devoted to studies of ways to improve feed utilization. A large portion of feed energy, and also protein, available to the ruminant results from microbial fermentation in the rumen, or rumen-reticulum. Environmental conditions maintained in the rumen are important in the rate of fermentation and the resulting end-products. Numerous experiments have shown that volatile fatty acids (VFA)--major ones being acetic, propionic and butyric produced by microbial fermentation in the rumen play major roles in energy metabolism of ruminants.
