The Effects Of Gestation Metabolize Energy Levels On Sow Productivity, George W. Libal, Richard W. Wahlstrom Nov 1974

The Effects Of Gestation Metabolize Energy Levels On Sow Productivity, George W. Libal, Richard W. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

Restricting the amount of energy a pregnant sow consumes during gestation has been accepted as a very desirable management practice. One benefit of limiting energy is increased litter size at birth because of more fertilized eggs being implanted, less early embryonic death loss and less stillbirths at parturition. Another benefit, particularly at a time of extremely high feed cots, is the economic advantage of less feed consumed during gestation when energy is restricted. At the present time the National Research Council (NRC) recommends 6340 Kcal of metabolize energy (ME) daily for the gestating sow. The study reported herein was conducted …

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

On approximately December 1, 1973, the first group of pigs was put on test in the new confinement finishing barn at the SDSU swine research unit. The barn consists of 24 pens with space for 8 pigs per pen or a total of 192 head of pigs. Three different slat types and sizes are included in the building which allow a comparison of pig performance as related to floor type. Ten of the pens have concrete slats 5 inches side, 10 of the pens have concrete slats 8 inches wide and 4 of the pens have 3 1/2 inch aluminum …

Effect Of Level Of Feeding During Lactation On Sow And Pig Performance, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom Nov 1974

Effect Of Level Of Feeding During Lactation On Sow And Pig Performance, George W. Libal, Richard C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

The requirements of the lactating sow for dietary energy are dependent on the level of body reserves at farrowing time and the amount and composition of milk produced. It has been reported that voluntary feed consumption and weight change during lactation are influenced by level of feeding and weight gain during gestation. Recent research has indicated that energy utilization during the reproductive cycle is more efficient with a feeding system allowing only moderate gains in gestation and an increased feeding level during lactation. the data reported herein is a summary of five trials, two of which were reported previously (A.S. …

Dried Brewers Grains As An Ingredient In Gestation Diets For Swine, Richard W. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal Nov 1974

Dried Brewers Grains As An Ingredient In Gestation Diets For Swine, Richard W. Wahlstrom, George W. Libal

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

There are a number of cereal grain by-products that are used as feed ingredients in livestock diets. Dried Brewers Grains is a by-product that has not been used to any extent in swine diets because of its relatively high fiber content and lack of palatability. This product contains about 26% protein and, when other sources of protein increased in price, it was an economical source of protein. The two experiments reported here were conducted to determine the value of dried brewers grains as an ingredient in diets for gestating swine.

Age Of Breeding And Reproductive Performance Of Gilts, George W. Libal, Richard W. Wahlstrom Nov 1974

Age Of Breeding And Reproductive Performance Of Gilts, George W. Libal, Richard W. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

At a time when pigs reach market weight at 5 to 6 months of age, when continuous farrowing allowing gilts to fit into the farrowing program any time of the year is more popular and when feed costs are very high for the 2 to 3 months of unproductive time while the gilt is reaching 8 months of age, it is time to reevaluate our recommendation of age at which gilts should be bred. The following data are from an initial experiment designed to compare reproductive performance of gilts bred at 6 months of age (approximately first estrus) with gilts …

Flock Record Summary, Phillip E. Plumart, Boyd J. Bonzer

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

A computerized flock record keeping system has been in use at South Dakota State University since 1965. A report is computed and published monthly from data received from approximately 60 flockowners. The records of those flocks completing their laying cycle during the calendar years of 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, and through June of 1974 are summarized in Table 1.

Effects Of Feed Restriction And Energy-Protein Relationships On Egg Production, E. Guenthner, C. W. Carlson Nov 1974

Effects Of Feed Restriction And Energy-Protein Relationships On Egg Production, E. Guenthner, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

Feed restriction is frequently used in handling broiler breeder hens to maximize performance and to economize feed costs. Some attempts have been made to apply this technique to egg laying strains. In the test to be reported here, 80 groups (24 hens per group) of caged egg-production strain pullets were fed four diets on a restricted and full-fed basis. The four diets provided two levels of protein (13.9 and 18.3%) and two levels of energy (2500 and 3300 Cal ME). Feed restriction was accomplished by covering the feeders at 3:00 PM and removing the covers the following morning at 7:00 …

Effects Of Copper On Turkey Lipids And Palatability, C. W. Carlson, E. Guenthner, R. A. Nelson, Dorothy Deethardt Nov 1974

Effects Of Copper On Turkey Lipids And Palatability, C. W. Carlson, E. Guenthner, R. A. Nelson, Dorothy Deethardt

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

Large Broad White turkeys were fed from one day of age to market weight on low protein diets with and without two forms of copper (sulfate and oxide) to supply 120 ppm. As reported previously (A.S. Series 73-22 and A.S. Series 73-25), copper enhanced growth but had no consistent effect upon fatty acid composition.

Effects Of Mercury On Production And Reproduction Of Laying Hens--Second Egg Laying Cycle, R. J. Emerick, C. W. Carlson, R. A. Nelson, C. E. Holmquist Nov 1974

Effects Of Mercury On Production And Reproduction Of Laying Hens--Second Egg Laying Cycle, R. J. Emerick, C. W. Carlson, R. A. Nelson, C. E. Holmquist

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974

Hens fed diets containing various levels of two mercury sources from the time of hatching were studied during a second laying cycle. Early growth data and data pertaining to the first laying cycle were reported in the 1973 Poultry Day reports (A.S. Series 73-18). It was concluded from these earlier phases of the study that inorganic mercury at levels up to 20 ppm in the diet does not influence growth or egg production, quality and hatchability. Methylmercury at levels of 2.5 ppm or less also appeared to be well tolerated with no visible harmful effects. However, detrimental effects of higher …
