Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Hurricane Bob, a category 3 storm, made landfall on Cape Cod in August 1991, and its effects on watersheds and adjoining estuaries were detected in the ongoing studies being caried out as part of the Waquoit Bay Land Margin Ecosystems Research project. On land, Bob had only minor overall effects on forests; localized wind bursts did snap and break trees in small and widely scattered forest parcels. Wind stripped up to half the leaves of deciduous trees and many herbaceous plants on the watershed, and most remaining leaves were damaged by salt, so that by the end of Aug, Cape …

Near–Infrared Classification Spectroscopy: H–Band Spectra Of Fundamental Mk Standards, Michael R. Meyer, Suzan Edwards, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Stephen E. Strom Nov 1998

Near–Infrared Classification Spectroscopy: H–Band Spectra Of Fundamental Mk Standards, Michael R. Meyer, Suzan Edwards, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Stephen E. Strom

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a catalog of H-band spectra for 85 stars of approximately solar abundance observed at a resolving power of 3000 with the KPNO Mayall 4 m Fourier Transform Spectrometer. The atlas covers spectral types O7M5 and luminosity classes IV as defined in the MK system. We identify both atomic and molecular indices and line ratios that are temperature and luminosity sensitive, allowing spectral classification to be carried out in the H-band. The line ratios permit spectral classification in the presence of continuum excess emission, which is commonly found in premain-sequence or evolved stars. We demonstrate that with …

Beliefs In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Iris Cohen Nov 1998

Beliefs In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Iris Cohen

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Several types of beliefs have been hypothesized to be associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including responsibility for harm, need to control thoughts, overestimates of threat, intolerance of uncertainty, and beliefs about the consequences of anxiety and capacity to cope. The present study compared 62 subjects with OCD, 45 with other anxiety disorders (AD) and 34 controls, using 3 measures of OCD-related beliefs. OCD subjects scored higher than AD and control samples on 2 general belief measures. A closer analysis of specific belief domains indicated that OCD subjects scored higher than AD and control subjects on all 6 specific belief domains …

A Late Cambrian Positive Carbon-Isotope Excursion In The Southern Appalachians: Relation To Biostratigraphy, Sequence Stratigraphy, Environments Of Deposition, And Diagenesis, Bosiljka Glumac, Kenneth R. Walker Nov 1998

A Late Cambrian Positive Carbon-Isotope Excursion In The Southern Appalachians: Relation To Biostratigraphy, Sequence Stratigraphy, Environments Of Deposition, And Diagenesis, Bosiljka Glumac, Kenneth R. Walker

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

A positive carbon-isotope excursion is recorded within the Upper Cambrian sedimentary succession in the southern Appalachians that consists of the Nolichucky Shale, the Maynardville Formation, and the Copper Ridge Dolomite. The lower part of the succession contains Aphelaspis zone fauna (Early Steptoean). The extensively dolomitized and poorly fossiliferous nature of the upper part of the succession precludes any detailed biostratigraphic determinations. Correlation with similar positive carbon-isotope excursions in coeval successions elsewhere suggests that this excursion represents a perturbation in the global cycling of carbon. Comparison of excursions at different localities in North America provides a means for the application of …

Near-Infrared Galaxy Counts To J And K ∼ 24 As A Function Of Image Size, Matthew A. Bershady, James D. Lowenthal, David C. Koo

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We have used the Keck 10 m telescope to count objects as a function of image size in two high Galactic latitude Ðelds covering 1.5 arcmin2 and reaching 50% completeness depths of K \ 24 and J \ 24.5 for stellar sources. Our counts extend D1 mag deeper in K than those of surveys with other telescopes; complement other Keck surveys in the K-band that provide counts at comparable or shallower depths but that have not utilized image structure; and extend by several magnitudes the J-band counts from brighter surveys using smaller telescopes that cover larger areas. We Ðnd the …

Hoarding, Compulsive Buying And Reasons For Saving, Randy O. Frost, Hyo Jin Kim, Claire Morris, Cinnamon Bloss, Marta Murray-Close, Gail Steketee

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two studies examined hypotheses about compulsive hoarding, compulsive buying and beliefs about saving and discarding derived from the cognitive-behavioral model of compulsive hoarding. A cognitive behavioral model of compulsive hoarding. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 34, 341-350.]. Study 1 examined the hypotheses in a college student population, while study 2 compared members of a support group for hoarding and clutter-related problems with a nonclinical control. Across studies the hypotheses were supported. Compulsive hoarding was associated with compulsive buying and the frequency of acquisition of possessions discarded by others, suggesting that compulsive acquisition may be a broader construct than compulsive buying among …

Thermoregulation Of Escherichia Coil Pap Transcription: H-Ns Is A Temperature-Dependent Dna Methylation Blocking Factor, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Melinda L. Angus Hill, Bruce A. Braaten, Marjan W. Van Der Woude, David A. Low Jul 1998

Thermoregulation Of Escherichia Coil Pap Transcription: H-Ns Is A Temperature-Dependent Dna Methylation Blocking Factor, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Melinda L. Angus Hill, Bruce A. Braaten, Marjan W. Van Der Woude, David A. Low

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The expression of Pap pili that facilitate the attach- ment of Escherichia coli to uroepithelial cells is shut off outside the host at temperatures below 268C. Ribo- nuclease protection analysis showed that this thermo- regulatory response was rapid as evidenced by the absence of papBA transcripts, coding for Pap pilin, after only one generation of growth at 238C. The his- tone-like nucleoid structuring protein H-NS and DNA sequences within papB were required for thermoregu- lation, but the PapB and PapI regulatory proteins were not. In vivo analysis of pap DNA methylation patterns indicated that H-NS or a factor regulated by …

Permitted Iron Emission Lines In The Classical T Tauri Star Dr Tauri, Georgina Beristain, Suzan Edwards, John Kwan

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a study of permitted emission lines of Fe I and Fe II in the spectrum of the high-accretion rate classical T Tauri star DR Tau. Echelle spectra collected at the 4 m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory between 1988 and 1992 include four epochs with red spectral coverage (~5000-6800 Å) and three with blue spectral coverage (~4000-4950 Å). A total of 62 unblended Fe I and Fe II lines are identified, their profiles are examined, and ratios of line pairs that are sensitive to column density or temperature are analyzed.

The unblended Fe profiles exhibit a …

The Immunodominant Brugia Malayi Paramyosin As A Marker Of Current Infection With Wuchereria Bancrofti Adult Worms, Sandra Langy, Catherine Plichart, Patrick Luquiaud, Steven A. Williams, Luc Nicolas

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The full-length cDNA sequence encoding Brugia malayi L3 paramyosin has been isolated by immunoscreening a cDNA library with a mouse antiserum raised against Wuchereria bancrofti L3 infective larvae. A recombinant truncated form of paramyosin was expressed as a glutathione S-transferase fusion protein and used to evaluate humoral responses of adults from a W. bancrofti-endemic area in French Polynesia according to their parasitological status. Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) preferentially bound to paramyosin in W. bancrofti-parasitized individuals, in contrast to unparasitized individuals, who harbored neither microfilaria nor Og4C3 adult worm circulating antigen. Reduction of the anti-paramyosin IgG4 titer following combined chemotherapy with diethylcarbamazine …

Immunochemical And Immunocytochemical Identification Of A Myosin Heavy Chain Polypeptide In Nicotiana Pollen Tubes, X. J. Tang, P. K. Hepler, Stylianos P. Scordilis

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A myosin heavy chain polypeptide has been identified and localized in Nicotiana pollen tubes using monoclonal anti-myosin antibodies. The epitopes of these antibodies were found to reside on the myosin heavy chain head and rod portion and were, therefore, designated anti-S-1 (myosin S-1) and anti-LMM (light meromyosin). On Western blots of the total soluble pollen tube proteins, both anti-S-1 and anti-LMM label a polypeptide of approximately 175,000 Mr. Immunofluorescence microscopy shows that both antibodies yield numerous fluorescent spots throughout the whole length of the tube, often with an enrichment in the tube tip. These fluorescent spots are thought to represent …

Experimental Evolution Of Complexity: In Vitro Emergence Of Intermolecular Ribozyme Interactions, Martin M. Hanczyc, Robert L. Dorit

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In the course of evolving variants of the Tetrahymena thermophila Group I ribozyme for improved DNA cleavage in vitro, we witnessed the unexpected emergence of a derived molecular species, capable of acting as a partner for the ribozyme, but no longer autocatalytic. This new RNA species exhibits a deletion in the catalytic core and participates in a productive intermolecular interaction with an active ribozyme, thus insuring its survival in the population. These novel RNA molecules have evolved a precise catalytic interaction with the Group I ribozyme and depend for their survival on the continued presence of active catalysts. This interaction …

Physical Dependence Of The Sensitivity And Room-Temperature Stability Of Auxge1-X Thin Film Resistive Thermometers On Annealing Conditions, Nathanael A. Fortune, Michael J. Graf, Keizo Murata Jan 1998

Physical Dependence Of The Sensitivity And Room-Temperature Stability Of Auxge1-X Thin Film Resistive Thermometers On Annealing Conditions, Nathanael A. Fortune, Michael J. Graf, Keizo Murata

Physics: Faculty Publications

The reported nearly constant temperature sensitivity of appropriately annealed polycrystalline AuxGe1-x thin films at cryogenic temperatures would appear to make them promising materials for low mass, rapid thermal response resistive thermometers, but their adoption has been limited by difficulties in fabrication and uncertainties in annealing. In this work, we present a method of fabrication and annealing which allows control of the two most important parameters for these films: the room-temperature resistivity ρRT and the temperature sensitivity η(T), where η ≡ -d In R/d In T. We find that the dependence of ρRT on total anneal duration t for x≈0.18 is …

The Effects Of Gain Sharing On The Basic Wage: The Case Of Improshare, Roger T. Kaufman Jan 1998

The Effects Of Gain Sharing On The Basic Wage: The Case Of Improshare, Roger T. Kaufman

Economics: Faculty Publications

Although gain-sharing plans are typically promoted to workers as a way of increasing total compensation, workers are often concerned that gain-sharing bonuses may becvomne substitutes for future wage increases that would have occurred in the absence of the plan. I examine the theoretical and empirical interaction among wages, bonuses, effort, and productivity in firms that implemented IMPROSHARE, a well-known gain-sharing plan. Using longitudinal data obtained from detailed survey questionnaire, I find that one can usually reject both the perfectly competitive model in which effort is held constant (in which case bonuses are a perfect substitute for wages) and the 'pure …

Far-Ultraviolet Spectra Of Starburst Galaxies: Stellar Population And The Kinematics Of The Interstellar Medium, Rosa M. Gonzalez Delgado, Claus Leitherer, Timothy Heckman, James D. Lowenthal, Henry C. Ferguson, Carmelle Robert

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The far-ultraviolet spectra of the four starburst galaxies NGC 6090, Mrk 66, Mrk 1267, and IRAS 0833 + 6517 were observed with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the Astro-2 mission. Additional data were obtained for IRAS 0833 + 6517 with the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. We analyze the observations in terms of the stellar content and the kinematics of the interstellar medium, and we discuss the implications of these results for the interpretation of the ultraviolet spectra of high-redshift galaxies. Evolutionary synthesis models are used to constrain the star formation history from the absolute ultraviolet …

A Longitudinal Study Of Engineering Student Performance And Retention. V. Comparisons With Traditionally-Taught Students, Richard M. Felder, Gary Felder, E. Jacquelin Dietz

Physics: Faculty Publications

In a longitudinal study at North Carolina State University, a cohort of students took five chemical engineering courses taught by the same instructor in five consecutive semesters. The courses made extensive use of active and cooperative learning and a variety of other techniques designed to address a broad spectrum of learning styles. Previous reports on the study summarized the instructional methods used in the experimental course sequence, described the performance of the cohort in the introductory chemical engineering course, and examined performance and attitude differences between students from rural and urban backgrounds and between male and female students.1–4 This paper …

Isotope Geochemistry Of Proterozoic Talc Occurrences In Archean Marbles Of The Ruby Mountains, Southwest Montana, U.S.A, John B. Brady, John T. Cheney, Amy Larson Rhodes, Angela Vasquez, Chris Green, Mathieu Duvall, Ari Kogut, Lewis Kaufman, Dana Kovaric

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Talc occurs as massive, economic deposits in upper amphibolite facies marbles of Archean age in southwestern Montana. Previous workers have demonstrated that the talc is a replacement of the marble that resulted from interaction with a large volume of fluid. δ18O (SMOW) values for dolomite and calcite range from 20-25‰ for the unaltered Archean marbles to as little as 8-10‰ in the talc deposits, suggesting that the metasomatic fluids had low δ18O values. In contrast, δ13C values for calcite and dolomite are similar for all samples (-2 to +2‰ PDB). Therefore, it is likely that the metasomatic fluids were oxygen-rich …

Comparison Of Recent Coral Life And Death Assemblages To Pleistocene Reef Communities: Implications For Rapid Faunal Replacement On Recent Reefs, Benjamin J. Greenstein, Lora A. Harris, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Marine ecologists and paleoecologists are increasingly recognizing that the Pleistocene and Holocene fossil record of coral reefs is the exclusive database from which an assessment of the long-term responses of reef communities to environmental perturbations may be obtained. The apparent persistence of coral communities in the face of intense fluctuations in sea level and sea surface temperature during glacial and interglacial stages of Pleistocene time is in marked contrast to dramatic fluctuations in reef community structure documented by short-term monitoring studies. We compared the taxonomic structure of live and dead coral communities on a modem patch reef currently undergoing a …

A New Genetic Locus In Sinorhizobium Meliloti Is Involved In Stachydrine Utilization, Donald A. Phillips, Eve S. Sande, J. A.C. Vriezen, Frans J. De Bruijn, Daniel Le Rudulier, Cecillia M. Joseph

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Stachydrine, a betaine released by germinating alfalfa seeds, functions as an inducer of nodulation genes, a catabolite, and an osmoprotectant in Sinorhizobium meliloti. Two stachydrine-inducible genes were found in S. meliloti 1021 by mutation with a Tn5-luxAB promoter probe. Both mutant strains (S10 and S11) formed effective alfalfa root nodules, but neither grew on stachydrine as the sole carbon and nitrogen source. When grown in the absence or presence of salt stress, S10 and S11 took up [14C]stachydrine as well as wild-type cells did, but neither used stachydrine effectively as an osmoprotectant. In the absence of salt stress, both S10 …

Detection Of The Filarial Parasite Mansonella Streptocerca In Skin Biopsies By A Nested Polymerase Chain Reaction-Based Assay, Peter U. Fischer, Dietrich W. Büttner, Jotham Bamuhiiga, Steven A. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

To differentiate the skin-dwelling filariae Mansonella streptocerca and Onchocerca volvulus, a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed from small amounts of parasite material present in skin biopsies. One nonspecific and one specific pair of primers were used to amplify the 5S rDNA spacer region of M. streptocerca. Biopsies with different microfilaria densities obtained from 104 Ugandans living in an area endemic forM. streptocerca were tested using both the nested PCR assay and standard parasitologic assessment of microfilariae. All 82 samples from microfilaria carriers were positive when tested using the nested PCR assay. In addition, M. streptocerca DNA could …

Effect Of Transatlantic Transport On Reproduction Of Agouti And Nonagouti Deer Mice, Peromyscus Maniculatus, Virginia Hayssen

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In conjunction with establishing colonies of deer mice in the UK, effects of transportation on reproduction in agouti (A) and nonagouti (a) deer mice were assessed. Adults were shipped via ground courier and air freight from Northampton, Massachusetts, USA to Sutton Bonington, Leicestershire, England in February and June. Deer mice were paired upon arrival in Sutton Bonington, whereas matched controls were paired in the original colonies at shipping. To assess reproduction, the following variables were monitored for 110 days for all 96 pairs: number of pairs producing litters, time from pairing to birth, interlitter interval, litter size at birth, and …

We present a new algorithm called PBSIM for computing image similarity, based upon a novel method of extracting bloblike features from images. In tests on a classification task using a data set of over 1000 images, PBSIM shows significantly higher accuracy than algorithms based upon color histograms, as well as previously reported results for another approach based upon bloblike features.

Illumination By Floodlights, William Steiger, Ileana Streinu Jan 1998

Illumination By Floodlights, William Steiger, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We consider three problems about the illumination of planar regions with floodlights of prescribed angles. Problem 1 is the decision problem: given a wedge W of angle φ ≤ π, n points p1 . . . . . pn in the plane and n angles α1 . . . . . αn such that ∑ni=1 αi ≤ θ, decide whether W can be illuminated by floodlights of angles α1 , . . . , αn placed in some order at the points p1 , . . . , pn and then rotated appropriately. We show that this problem is the …
