Fields Of Revision: Adaptations Of Wren’S Elegy By Mo Yun-Suk And Kim Ki-Young, Irhe Sohn, Ki-In Chong

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

This essay investigates the ‘field of revision’, in which multiple texts permeate each other to question and transform a given story. To do so, it examines the adaptations of Wren’s Elegy, a South Korean epistolary poem that narrates the story of its titular character’s love for a married man named Simon. The decades-long development of its story—from Mo Yun-suk’s initial publication in 1937 as a revisionist project based on Yi Kwang-su’s Heartless, to three revisions made by the author herself, to its film adaptation by Kim Ki-young—shows how adaptation involves multiple texts, authors, and historical and cultural conditions …

The Textual Architecture Of Empire In Two Early Qing Anthologies, Jessica D. Moyer Jan 2021

The Textual Architecture Of Empire In Two Early Qing Anthologies, Jessica D. Moyer

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

During the first half century of the Qing dynasty, Manchu emperors commissioned massive publication projects on the Chinese classics. In early Qing interpretations of classics on the family, negotiations between Manchu and Han family and gender norms furthered the empire-building project. This article compares the spatial form of the Yuding Nei ze yanyi (1656), an expansion of the “Inner Standards” chapter of the Classic of Rites commissioned by the Shunzhi emperor, to that of the Yuding Xiao jing yanyi (1682), an expansion of the Classic of Filial Piety commissioned by the Kangxi emperor. These works are textual spaces …

Translingual Practices In A ‘Monolingual’ Society: Discourses, Learners’ Subjectivities And Language Choices, Reiko Kato, Yuri Kumagai Aug 2020

Translingual Practices In A ‘Monolingual’ Society: Discourses, Learners’ Subjectivities And Language Choices, Reiko Kato, Yuri Kumagai

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

This study explores how Japanese EFL students engaged in translingual practices during a telecollaborative project that connected two college classrooms in the US and Japan. The project aimed at encouraging the students’ creative uses of languages, promoting an appreciation for their multiple linguistic resources, and nurturing their sense of ownership of languages informed by translingual practices. Contrary to our expectations, students in Japan exhibited great efforts to write in monolingual English and/or Japanese, which prompted us to investigate the reasons behind their language choices. Based on data analyses drawing on poststructural theory of subjectivities, we argue that the students’ language …

Technology As Enabler Of Learner Autonomy And Authentic Learning In Chinese Language Acquisition: A Case Study In Higher Education, Mario Valdebenito, Yalin Chen

Based on the Constructivist approach, meaningful learning only occurs when learners have agency to construct meaning through social interactions. The ability to self-direct, communicate, collaborate, and transfer learning to real-life situations are crucial skills for the 21st century. These skills allow new generations to adapt to this new information era in any field and/or disciplines they pursue; foreign language acquisition is not an exception. In this article, the authors argue that language learning can help learners cultivate such abilities with the aid of a holistic curriculum design and the effective use of technology. The authors also explore how using tools, …

Savvy Women And Boundary Negotiations In Qing Fiction, Jessica Moyer Dec 2019

Savvy Women And Boundary Negotiations In Qing Fiction, Jessica Moyer

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

This paper examines a particular character type in Qing vernacular short stories: clever women who test the definition of feminine virtue by acting admirably outside normal gender boundaries. These female protagonists argue, meddle in men's business, divert property from the patriline, and even lose their chastity - yet each of them is presented as unquestionably virtuous. The rhetorical approaches by which their male authors present them in a positive light illuminate the strategies available to men and women for thinking creatively about gender in Qing China.

“Making It Your Own By Adapting It To What’S Important To You”: Plurilingual Critical Literacies To Promote L2 Japanese Users’ Sense Of Ownership Of Japanese, Noriko Iwasaki, Yuri Kumagai Jan 2019

“Making It Your Own By Adapting It To What’S Important To You”: Plurilingual Critical Literacies To Promote L2 Japanese Users’ Sense Of Ownership Of Japanese, Noriko Iwasaki, Yuri Kumagai

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

The dichotomy between native speaker (NS) and non-native speaker (NNS) remains ubiquitous across different language-learning contexts despite increasing mobility and multilingualism of society. L2 Japanese learners in particular may find themselves positioned as subordinate to NSs because of the myth of Japan being a homogeneous nation of one race and one language. To help L2 Japanese students counter such positioning and gain a sense of ownership, we implemented “plurilingual critical literacies” in a Japanese language course in the U.S. Critical literacy aims to cultivate students’ awareness that power relationships are at play in language use, and plurilingual pedagogy valorizes students’ …

Collaborative Curricular Initiatives: Linking Language And Literature Courses For Critical And Cultural Literacies, Yuri Kumagai, Kimberly Kono Oct 2018

Collaborative Curricular Initiatives: Linking Language And Literature Courses For Critical And Cultural Literacies, Yuri Kumagai, Kimberly Kono

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

This article introduces a curricular initiative linking language and literature courses at a liberal arts college in the northeastern United States. In the spring 2013 and fall 2014 semesters, we concurrently taught an advanced-level Japanese language course and a literature seminar, both of which focused on ethnic “minorities” in Japan. This arrangement allowed students to utilize their linguistic and literary analytical skills and integrated their learning in both Japanese and English. By reading the same texts and discussing surrounding issues in both languages, students began to see how the cultural context of language shapes different approaches to a topic. Based …

Content-Based Instruction (Cbi) For The Social Future: A Recommendation For Critical Content-Based Language Instruction (Ccbi), Shinji Sato, Atsushi Hasegawa, Yuri Kumagai, Uichi Kamiyoshi

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

In this article, we seek to reconceptualize content-based instruction (CBI) curricula and practices from a critical perspective. Further, we propose developing criticality as an essential component of CBI, advocating for an approach we call critical content-based instruction (CCBI). While the importance of CBI has long been recognized, previous discussions predominantly focused on its effectiveness for language learning (and content learning to a lesser degree), and overlooked its fundamental linkage and relevance to broader educational missions. In order to fully maximize the potential of CBI and envision language education as integral to the advancement of society, we argue that a critical …

Singing Japan’S Heart And Soul: A Discourse On The Black Enka Singer Jero And Race Politics In Japan, Neriko Musha Doerr, Yuri Kumagai Jul 2012

Singing Japan’S Heart And Soul: A Discourse On The Black Enka Singer Jero And Race Politics In Japan, Neriko Musha Doerr, Yuri Kumagai

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications

This article analyses a discourse around the ascendancy of Jero, an ‘African-American’ male dressed in hip-hop attire singing enka, a genre of music that has been dubbed ‘the heart and soul of Japan.’ Since his debut in Japan in February 2008, Jero has attracted much media attention. This article analyses a prominent discourse, ‘Jero is almost Japanese because he sings enka well.’ While many argue that to challenge stereotypes and racism is to introduce alternative role models, we show that such alternative role models can also reinforce the existing regime of difference of Japanese vs. the Other and perpetuate …

Atsuko Takahashi Jan 2012

Atsuko Takahashi

East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications
