The study of the college experience and student self-esteem contributes to the understanding of human development. There are biological, environmental, and cognitive factors that influence student behavior. For women, the process is often preordained by gender roles shaped by men. The effects play a strong part in career development. This paper explores social, psychological, and biological research that informs human behavior. Studies about college influences on women's self-concept and self-esteem reveal the factors involved in their career persistence, and decision-making. This paper examines the decline and changing nature of work in the manufacturing sector in a variety of industries located in the city of Glens Falls, New York. A small industrial city, Glens Falls has experienced an overall decline in population, the number of industries, plant locations, and total manufacturing employment. An examination of eleven companies, including the history and nature of operations, confirms a cycle of manufacturing job creation and job destruction which ebbs and flows based on the restructuring activities of companies including shifting, consolidating and closing plants as they strive to maintain and increase profitability. This paper considers major issues in high-functioning autism (HFA), including problems with diagnosis, sensory processing, social behavior and communication problems. Along with discussions of historical developments and recent research, the personal experiences of individuals with autism and their families are described, including those of the author’s.

Diagnostic issues include changes in diagnostic criteria, confusion with schizophrenia, and unclear boundaries between HFA and other disorders.

Individuals with autism experience difficulty processing sensory information. Usually all the sensory systems are affected: tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, oral auditory, visual, and olfactory.
