An African Argument From The Compendium Of Yorùbá Ancient Wisdom Against Gender Inequality, Cyril-Mary Pius Olatunji C. P.

This paper deals with gender issues in African culture. Many scholars working on African indigenous and non-indigenous cultures have had something to say about the treatment of the women folk and the topic of gender inequality in Africa (see for instance, Olokesusi, 2011:2; Cheru, 2008:8; Steady, 1981:7-41; Evan-Pritchard, 1965: 76-101). While Y. A. Blay contends that “any train of thought that interrogates the condition and/or position of women, be it social, economic, political or the like, is an import of the West and therefore inapplicable in the global African context”, the paper shows that African traditional practices often paraded as …

More Than A Cultural Celebration: The Politics Of Chinese New Year In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon
Chang Yau HOON
In the aftermath of the May 1998 riots that forced President Suharto to step down, ethnic Chinese received unprecedented freedom to assert their long suppressed cultural and religious identity. Following the transition from assimilation to multiculturalism, for the first time in over three decades Chinese culture became more visible and ethnic Chinese could finally enjoy the freedom to celebrate Chinese New Year (Imlek) publicly. This article focuses on the politics of the re-emergent Chinese New Year celebration in the Indonesian public sphere. It demonstrates the significance of Imlek as an ethnic symbol to Chinese-Indonesians. Borrowing Hobsbawm’s concept of “invented tradition”, …

This essay recounts my experiences at an invigorating scholarly retreat. The community I encountered proved to be both challenging and affirming. In that way, it was quite different from the experience that academia typically generates for scholars of color. I write with honesty about institutionalized racism as an attempt to mentor through publication. I want others to know that if they notice the intractability of racism (even) in scholarly environments, they are not alone...and it is not just in their imagination.
Port Jews Or A People Of The Diaspora? A Critique Of The Port Jew Concept, C. S. Monaco
Port Jews Or A People Of The Diaspora? A Critique Of The Port Jew Concept, C. S. Monaco
C. S. Monaco
This article offers a critical examination of the port Jew concept that was first introduced in the late 1990s. The port Jew "social type" has been construed as an alternate path to modernity, a phenomenon that was distinct from the European Haskalah and intrinsic to the supposedly liberal environment of port towns and cities. Drawing on a body of historical evidence (primarily from the Dutch and British Caribbean), this article questions key characteristics of the port Jew thesis and argues that a diaspora framework is better suited for conceptualizing the Jewish Atlantic world.
