The current legal debate about the regulation of economic exchange between intimates mistakenly assumes that the law does not countenance such exchange to any notable extent. This assumption is so widely held that it unites otherwise disparate anticommodification and pro-market scholars. Both groups agree that the law maintains a strict boundary between economic exchange and intimacy, and disagree only on whether to applaud or criticize that boundary. Both overlook or underemphasize the degree to which the law already permits economic exchange within intimate relationships.

Our goal in this work is to pool information across microarray studies conducted at different institutions using two different versions of Affymetrix chips to identify genes whose expression levels offer information on lung cancer patients’ survival above and beyond the information provided by readily available clinical covariates. We combine information across chip types by identifying “matching probes” present on both chips, and then assembling them into new probesets based on Unigene clusters. This method yields comparable expression level quantifications across chips without sacrificing much precision or significantly altering the relative ordering of the samples. A few days after the criminal attacks on the World Trade Center, President George W. Bush declared a metaphorical war on terror. The word “war” was once again applied to a nebulous concept in hopes of rallying support to Bush’s plans. Had Bush declared war on “terrorism,” a noun that denotes physical acts of violence, the war would have remained attached to the material world. By declaring war on “terror,” America’s enemy became ephemeral and eternal. This paper examines youth attitudes toward voting and volunteering: the measurable indicators of social capital. First, we review literature on the subject of social capital and civic engagement among youth. Then, we summarize our analysis, available in detail elsewhere, of 2002 and 2004 surveys of youth by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE). Using this information, we draw implications for practitioners. Finally, we highlight specific strategies for building social capital among youth — by looking to the long term — and examine one particular youth civic engagement program through this lens.

This Comment takes as its starting point the adoption of the first five pieces of harmonized legislation created as part of the EU’s asylum regime overhaul of the early 2000s and proposes constructive solutions to compensate for the inadequate results of the May 2004 negotiations in Brussels. Specifically, it is proposed that an EU-wide asylum appellate court could assist the Member States in completing the work they started by creating a comprehensive harmonization consistent with international law.

Wrongful abortion is an abortion that a pregnant woman is induced to undergo by a negligent conduct (usually a medical misrepresentation). For example, early in her pregnancy a woman is told by her physician that a medication that she had taken would cause her baby to be born with a severe birth defect. Based on the expert opinion, she decides to undergo an abortion. Only after the abortion does she learn that the advice regarding the baby's health was a negligent misrepresentation, and that the termination of the pregnancy was unnecessary. The lead author questioned over 500 self-identified gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) fraternity and sorority members to assess their reasons for joining; how their membership affected their sexual identity development and intimate relationships; the degree of homophobia and heterosexism encountered; how sexual orientation affected the quality of their fraternal experiences; and the level of acceptance or rejection they faced. Many respondents were in the early phases of sexual identity development at the time they joined, and most chose to conceal their sexual orientation from their fellow members. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a set of analyses comparing costs and outcomes of lower extremity joint replacement patients discharged to three different post-acute settings: inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs), skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), and patient homes. Multivariate techniques are employed in order to adjust these analyses for observable differences in severity of illness across sites of care. In doing so, multinomial models are used that predict which type of institutional post-acute care a beneficiary accesses, and these predictors are described. This article summarizes international law, and the law of India and the United States, relevant to intercountry adoption. The article then presents extensive information and analysis of a major series of adoption scandals in Andhra Pradesh, India. The article uses this analysis of law and a major series of adoption scandals to present the "two sides of intercountry adoption:" positively, as a humanitarian act, and negatively as a form of child trafficking. The weaknesses and vulnerabilities of the intercountry adoption system that led to the Indian adoption scandals are extensively analyzed.

The researchers in this study developed and validated a questionnaire to measure the needs of end-of-life (EOL) caregivers. The model is used to facilitate meaningful and supportive experiences for both the patient and caregiver. The questionnaire was developed using existing scales of meaning, self acceptance, burden, and gain as well as new scales of caregiver comfort, importance of caregiving tasks, and caregiver closure. The sample included 34 current and 17 bereaved caregivers affiliated with The Hospice Institute of the Florida Suncoast. The scales performed well in terms of concurrent validity, internal consistency, and reliability.

We do not know to what extent the needs of caregivers involved with patients at the end of life are being met by care providers and whether caregiving at life’s end can be a positive experience. We used the Hospice Experience Model of Care as a framework for understanding the effect of transformative tasks on caregiving at life’s end.
