The Principle And Practice Of Women's 'Full Citizenship': A Case Study Of Sex-Segregated Public Education, Jill Elaine Hasday Dec 2002

The Principle And Practice Of Women's 'Full Citizenship': A Case Study Of Sex-Segregated Public Education, Jill Elaine Hasday

Jill Elaine Hasday

For more than a quarter century, the Supreme Court has repeatedly declared that sex-based state action is subject to heightened scrutiny under the Equal Protection Clause. But the Court has always been much less clear about what that standard allows and what it prohibits. For this reason, it is especially noteworthy that one of the Court's most recent sex discrimination opinions, United States v. Virginia, purports to provide more coherent guidance.

Virginia suggests that the constitutionality of sex-based state action turns on whether the practice at issue denies women "full citizenship stature" or "create[s] or perpetuate[s] the legal, social, and …

Malignancy In Oral Lichen Planus: A Review Of A Group From The Malaysian Population, H. B. Yaacob, P. L. Tan, W.C. Ngeow

Wei Cheong Ngeow

The objective of this study was to determine the socio-demography (age, race and gender) of a group of Malaysian patients who were diagnosed as suffering from oral lichen planus (OLP). The occurrence of malignancy was also investigated. A total of 77 clinical and biopsy records of patients with OLP were studied. Females were affected more than males, with the female to male ratio being 2:1. Middle-aged Indian and Chinese females tend to be affected by OLP when compared with the rest of the population. Only 19 patients returned for further follow-up. One adult Indian female with a six-year history of …

Human Rights: The Emerging Norm Of Corporate Responsibility, Claire Moore Dickerson Apr 2002

Human Rights: The Emerging Norm Of Corporate Responsibility, Claire Moore Dickerson

Claire Moore Dickerson

Human-rights norms are now evolving toward an increased recognition of the collective as well. Included among the civil and political rights, and the economic, social, and cultural rights, are rights that are most effective when used by a group. The solidarity rights, including the right to development, are a natural culmination of that trend. These norms emerge from the larger society that extends beyond the developed world, and certainly far beyond the corporations' commercial environment. A democratic process of admittedly varying formality and effectiveness creates and legitimates these norms. The feedback between (1) corporations' conduct in support of the collective …

Media Advisers - Shadow Players In Political Communication, Richard Phillipps Mar 2002

Media Advisers - Shadow Players In Political Communication, Richard Phillipps

Richard Phillipps

Extract:Synopsis:It is a commonplace in political communication that the news media mediate wider political realities to their audiences. The extent to which that news content is itself mediated by others is a more ambiguous and problematic area. Perhaps because it is rarely directly visible to the public, the work of media advisers or press secretaries has become the subject of much speculation, with sweeping claims about their power. This thesis systematically explores the role of media advisers, a backroom group sometimes labelled spin-doctors or minders. Until now, this pivotal group in democratic political communication has not been the focus of …

The Aging And Dying Processes And The Health Of Older Adults, Paula Diehr Mar 2002

The Aging And Dying Processes And The Health Of Older Adults, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

It is difficult to distinguish changes in health due to aging from those related to dying, because the two processes are highly related. Some potentially treatable conditions may mistakenly be dismissed as due to old age. The goal of this article was to examine the relationships of aging and of dying to changes in 10 health-related variables: self-rated health, depression, ADLs, IADLs, minimental state examination, body mass index, blocks walked per week, bed days, hospitalization, and walking speed (all coded so that higher values were better). We used longitudinal data from the Cardiovascular Health Study to estimate the changes in …

Multidimensional Properties Of The Lot-R: Effects Of Optimism And Pessimism On Career And Well-Being Related Variables In Adolescents, Peter A. Creed, Wendy Patton, Dee Bartrum Jan 2002

Multidimensional Properties Of The Lot-R: Effects Of Optimism And Pessimism On Career And Well-Being Related Variables In Adolescents, Peter A. Creed, Wendy Patton, Dee Bartrum

Dee Bartrum

The Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), measures of career maturity, career decision-making, career goals, and well-being were administered to 504 high school students. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated bidimensionality rather than unidimensionality for the LOT-R, with the two factors of optimism and pessimism being largely unrelated. Those with high optimism reported high levels of career planning and exploration, were more confident about their career decisions, and had more career related goals. Those with high pessimism reported low levels of career and decision-making knowledge, were more career indecisive, and reported low levels of school achievement. For well-being, those with high levels …

Eurcentrism And The Role Of The Human Sciences In The Dialogue Among Civilization, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 2002

Eurcentrism And The Role Of The Human Sciences In The Dialogue Among Civilization, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

In public discourse and formal education, human sciences need to facilitate the dialogue among civilizations to inculcate an attitude founded on appreciation, understanding, interest, and compassion for the cultures and worldviews of the other. All belief sys- tems are corruptible and can be perverted, and there are specific social and historical conditions that result in these perversions. Human sciences must go beyond merely correcting the fallacies and distortions of public discourse. They must attack the root of the problem, which is the problem of Eurocentrism in social science education that ulti- mately informs public discourse. The problem has to be …

Just What Is Incidental, Integrated And Implicit About Grammar Instruction?, Arshad Abd Samad

Arshad Abd Samad

This paper discusses popular notions of how grammar should be presented in the ESL classroom. Reference will especially be made to recent empirical and theoretical bases to grammar instruction which incorporate the role of various language sub-systems and acquisition processes. Drawing particularly on the findings of a study that examines the roles of meaning and structural aspects in processing language, this paper will make suggestions for grammar instruction in Malaysia.

Of Information Highways And Toxic Byways: Women And Environmental Protest In A Northern Mexican City, Anna O. Oleary Jan 2002

Of Information Highways And Toxic Byways: Women And Environmental Protest In A Northern Mexican City, Anna O. Oleary

Anna Ochoa OLeary

This case study of community protest in Hermosillo, a Mexican city in the state of Sonora, outlines s a postmodern model of environmental protest as one that primarily carried out by women and social networking. The model of community highlights the use of social networks as a means of politicizing a toxic waste dump eight kilometers outside the city. A feminist perspective reveals a struggle primarily carried out by women and bears out the intersection of gender, environmentalism, and globalization. As familiar spaces of social interaction, social networks provided the cultural platform from which women agitated for the dump’s closure. …

Response Decision Processes And Externalizing Behavior Problems In Adolescents, Reid Griffith Fontaine, Virginia Salzer Burks, Kenneth A. Dodge Jan 2002

Response Decision Processes And Externalizing Behavior Problems In Adolescents, Reid Griffith Fontaine, Virginia Salzer Burks, Kenneth A. Dodge

Reid G. Fontaine

Externalizing behavior problems of 124 adolescents were assessed across Grades 7–11. In Grade 9, participants were also assessed across social-cognitive domains after imagining themselves as the object of provocations portrayed in six videotaped vignettes. Participants responded to vignette-based questions representing multiple processes of the response decision step of social information processing. Phase 1 of our investigation supported a two-factor model of the response evaluation process of response decision (response valuation and outcome expectancy). Phase 2 showed significant relations between the set of these response decision processes, as well as response selection, measured in Grade 9 and (a) externalizing behavior in …

The Importance Of The Normality Assumption In Large Public Health Data Sets, Paula Diehr, Thomas Lumley Jan 2002

The Importance Of The Normality Assumption In Large Public Health Data Sets, Paula Diehr, Thomas Lumley

Paula Diehr

It is widely but incorrectly believed that the t-test and linear regression are valid only for Normally distributed outcomes. The t-test and linear regression compare the mean of an outcome variable for different subjects. While these are valid even in very small samples if the outcome variable is Normally distributed, their major usefulness comes from the fact that in large samples they are valid for any distribution. We demonstrate this validity by simulation in extremely non-Normal data. We discuss situations in which in other methods such as the Wilcoxon rank sum test and ordinal logistic regression (proportional odds model) have …

Weight-Modification Trials In Older Adults: What Should The Outcome Measure Be?, Paula Diehr Jan 2002

Weight-Modification Trials In Older Adults: What Should The Outcome Measure Be?, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

BACKGROUND: Overweight older adults are often counseled to lose weight, even though there is little evidence of excess mortality in that age group. Overweight and underweight may be more associated with health status than with mortality, but few clinical trials of any kind have been based on maximizing years of healthy life (YHL), as opposed to years of life (YOL). OBJECTIVE: This paper examines the relationship of body mass index (BMI) to both YHL and YOL. Results were used to determine whether clinical trials of weight-modification based on improving YHL would be more powerful than studies based on survival. DESIGN: …
