Possible Applications Of Neural Nets To Power System Operation And Control, P. K. Kalra, Alok Srivastava, D. K. Chaturvedi Dec 1992

Possible Applications Of Neural Nets To Power System Operation And Control, P. K. Kalra, Alok Srivastava, D. K. Chaturvedi

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

Problems related to power system operation and control are complex and time consuming because of the non-linearities involved in their formulation and solution. Fast solutions to these problems can be obtained only through parallel processing. Neural nets provide massive parallel processing facilities and may also be used efficiently to model systems with non-linearities. The capabilities of neural nets can, therefore, be well utilized in modelling and processing problems related to power systems. In order to reduce the burden on computers, algorithms involving optimization and complex equations can be converted to heuristics. These heuristics can then be represented in terms of …

A Descriptive Study Of The Functional Components Of Browsing., Barbara H. Kwasnik Aug 1992

A Descriptive Study Of The Functional Components Of Browsing., Barbara H. Kwasnik

Barbara H. Kwasnik

The paper describes a descriptive study of the functional components of browsing, which is viewed as the strategic and adaptive technique that people use to search, scan, navigate through, skim, sample, and explore information systems. Data on browsing is collected from thirty participants -- ten each in three browsing formats: print, command-driven computer version, and hypertext window-environment version. Data collection is by means of several techniques: the collection of thinking-out-loud, task-concurrent protocols; open-question interviews during the task; observation; and video and sound recording. The aim of analysis is to describe functions of browsing such as: orientation, place-marking, transition, comparison, identification, …

An Income-Satiation Model Of Efficiency Wages, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Jul 1992

An Income-Satiation Model Of Efficiency Wages, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Efficiency wages are wages that exceed a worker's reservation wage. A standard explanation for such wages is ``bonding'': by increasing the worker's fear of discharge, high wages increase the worker's cost from punishment. A neglected alternative is ``satiation'': by decreasing the worker's marginal utility of income, the high wage decreases the benefit from misbehavior. Satiation, unlike bonding, applies even in a one- period model, but it relies on the misbehavior having a monetary benefit and on at least part of the punishment being nonmonetary.

Analyzing Performance Skewness In Public Agencies: The Case Of Urban Mass Transit, Herman L. Boschken Jul 1992

Analyzing Performance Skewness In Public Agencies: The Case Of Urban Mass Transit, Herman L. Boschken

Herman L. Boschken

Previous studies of public organizational performance have focused mostly on operating efficiency, without dealing with the complex accountability problems associated with plural public interests. The fact that an agency exhibits multiple and often paradoxical performances has not been of comparable concern. This failure to account for performance in a multiple-constituencies context has led to a narrow view of how well agencies do. To broaden the research on agency performance, a multiple-constituencies model is introduced and tested for statistically significant variances. The findings confirm the model's robustness in structuring a dependent variable for empirical research on why agencies perform toward different …

Discourse-Level Analysis Of Abstracts For Information Retrieval: A Probabilistic Approach, Robert N. Oddy Jul 1992

Discourse-Level Analysis Of Abstracts For Information Retrieval: A Probabilistic Approach, Robert N. Oddy

Robert Oddy

The objective of this research is to contribute to our knowledge of how people seek information, and how computer systems can be designed to help in this process. Most information retrieval research since the field emerged in the 1950's has reduced these questions to that of trying to determine how documents relevant to a user's query might be selected from a large collection of texts---a question that has proved remarkably difficult to answer. The present work takes the stance that this particular reduction increasingly limits progress towards the objective stated above. It is directed instead towards the development of a …

Transit Passage Regime Controversy Revisited:, Young K. Kim Jun 1992

Transit Passage Regime Controversy Revisited:, Young K. Kim

Young K Kim

In our contemporary international community, ensuring an unimpeded right of navigation and over-flight through those choke-pointed channels is vital not only to some western naval powers, but also to average industrialized countries. Any arbitrary restriction on straits transit would probably have serious negative effects on developed and developing countries alike. By the same token, any lawlessness in the adjacent territorial area of the straits resulting from the denial of coastal states' control would probably mean a serious disaster not only for the ships and aircraft in transit in those dense congestion, but also for the littoral administration in population control …

The Geographical Concentration Of Employment And Its Implications For Trade And Adjustment, Robert C. Shelburne, Robert W. Bednarzik Jun 1992

The Geographical Concentration Of Employment And Its Implications For Trade And Adjustment, Robert C. Shelburne, Robert W. Bednarzik

Robert C. Shelburne

This paper examines the geographical concentration of employment by detailed industrial categories by state using a Department of Labor dataset not available to the public. It discusses the theoretical reasons for geographical concentration, and provides detailed Gini coefficients for both 3 and 4 digit SIC categories. It discusses how concentration varies by type of industry, and by the intensity to which the industry either exports or imports. Its provides information on the location of industries intensively involved with trade. This information in then used to assess the possible adjustment pressures that might result from NAFTA. A condensed version of this …

Can Small-Area Analysis Detect Variation In Surgery Rates? The Power Of Small-Area Variation Analysis., Paula Diehr Jun 1992

Can Small-Area Analysis Detect Variation In Surgery Rates? The Power Of Small-Area Variation Analysis., Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

A variety of statistical methods can be used in small-area analysis to test whether there is more variation than would be expected by chance alone. However, the power of these methods to detect existing variation has never been studied. The authors used data regarding back surgery in Washington State to suggest several types of variation that might exist (alternative hypotheses), and then used computer simulation to determine the power, or the probability of detecting this variation. The chi-square test had the highest power of all methods considered against most alternative hypotheses. Power is higher if there are no multiple admissions, …

Assessing Response Bias In Random-Digit Dialling Surveys: The Telephone-Prefix Method, Paula Diehr Jun 1992

Assessing Response Bias In Random-Digit Dialling Surveys: The Telephone-Prefix Method, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Knowledge of the characteristics of survey non-respondents is important to determine generalizability to the population of interest. In a recent random-digit dialling survey of health behaviours only 73 per cent of the households contacted provided any information about household composition, and only 74 per cent of those actually completed the extended interview, for an overall response rate of 54 per cent. To identify possible biases we grouped all attempted phone numbers by their prefix, and looked for the association between the response rate for that prefix and other summary variables known about the prefix. A simulation study showed that the …

Une Nouvelle Aperçue Sur Le Tableau Périodique, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

As science advances, its laws become fewer but of greater scope. In this respect the Periodic Law, which is the basis of the Periodic Table, represents a major step in the progress of chemistry - - it affords the natural classification of the elements. The Periodic Table was developed by chemists more than one hundred years ago as a correlation for the properties of the elements. With the discovery of the internal structure of the atom, it became recognized by physicists as a natural law. When the crystalline structure of solids was studied, the nature of the chemical bonds was …

Managerial Conservatism And Rational Information Acquisition, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Mar 1992

Managerial Conservatism And Rational Information Acquisition, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Conservative managerial behavior can be rational and profit- maximizing. If the valuation of innovations contains white noise and the status quo would be preferred to random innovation, then any innovation that does not appear to be substantially better than the status quo should be rejected. The more successful the firm, the higher the threshold for accepting innovation should be, and the greater the conservative bias. Other things equal, more successful firms will spend less on research, adopt fewer innovations, and be less likely to advance the industry 's best practice.

O Currículo De 1899 De Epitácio Pessoa [The 1899 Curriculum Of Epitácio Pessoa], Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia

Karl M Lorenz
