Over Wetenschap En Politiek In Actie, Serge Gutwirth, Koen Raes

Serge Gutwirth

Debate with colleagues about the acceptability of politics of recognition of "alternative" medicine (homeopathy, etc.). Koen Raes and I defend the position that it is not because something is not "scientifically proven" it should not be regulated by government.

Stock Banks And Mutual Banks, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Oct 1988

Stock Banks And Mutual Banks, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Because mutual banks do not allow shareholders to discipline bad managers and so have higher costs, they have been disappearing since bank entry deregulation in the 1980's. They were common before regulation in the 1930's, and are more common in the 19th century. I propose that this is because of the absence of deposit insurance. Depositors wanted safety more than low operating costs, and a mutual manager, in a cushy job he could not lose except by bankrupting his firm, would also value safety.

Entry For Buyout, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Mar 1988

Entry For Buyout, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Entry into a monopolized industry may be profitable if the entrant is bought out even if it would be unprofitable to enter for continuing operation. The stronger is duopoly competition, the greater is the incentive for buyout, so an incumbent's toughness in produce-market competition may be his own undoing. Evidence from the 1890's shows examples of entry for buyout.

Infant Mortality And Social Work: Legacy Of Success, Terri Combs-Orme Mar 1988

Infant Mortality And Social Work: Legacy Of Success, Terri Combs-Orme

Terri Combs-Orme

Although it is not widely known, social workers have had a substantial part in the impressive reduction in infant mortality achieved in the United States during this century. This article reviews that contribution, noting a decline in interest in infant mortality in the profession beginning in the 1950s. Recent trends are noted that seem to suggest a renewal in the profession's interest in this important subject.

Inovação Curricular E A Reforma De 1855 De Luiz Pedreira Do Couto Ferraz [Curricular Innovation And The 1855 Reform Of Luiz Pedreira Do Couto Ferraz], Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia

Karl M Lorenz

Photoperiod Effects On 2n Pollen Production, Response To Anther Culture, And Net Photosynthesis Of A Diplandrous Clone Of Solanum Phureja, Henry Owen, R. Veilleux, F. Haynes, K. Haynes Jan 1988

Photoperiod Effects On 2n Pollen Production, Response To Anther Culture, And Net Photosynthesis Of A Diplandrous Clone Of Solanum Phureja, Henry Owen, R. Veilleux, F. Haynes, K. Haynes

Henry R. Owen

Flow-cytometric analysis of pollen samples obtained from Solanum phureja, clone PP5, grown under 10, 14, and 18 hour photoperiods at the Southeastern Plant Environment Laboratories of North Carolina State University yielded two populations of pollen based on size parameters. These populations corresponded to pollen separation based on propidium iodide staining of DNA. Anther culture response from plants grown under 14 and 18 hour photo periods for 8, I 0, 12, and 14 weeks was greatest from 8 week old plants grown under a 14 hour photoperiod. Net photosynthesis was significantly higher for plants grown under a 10 hour photoperiod than …

Environmental, Genotypic, And Ploidy Effects On Endopolyploidization Within A Genotype Of Solanum Phureja And Its Derivatives, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, D. Levy, D. L. Ochs Jan 1988

Environmental, Genotypic, And Ploidy Effects On Endopolyploidization Within A Genotype Of Solanum Phureja And Its Derivatives, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, D. Levy, D. L. Ochs

Henry R. Owen

Flow-cytometric analyses of DNA content were performed on chopped in vivo, in vitro, and protoplast-derived in vitro nuclei of Solanum phureja. An anther-derived monoploid genotype and a diploid and tetraploid clone, derived from callus culture of the monoploid genotype, were used to characterize the influence of in vivo and in vitro environment and explant ploidy level on the extent of endopolyploidization. In addition, protoplast-derived nuclei, from nine anther-derived monoploid genotypes, were examined for genotypic influences on endopolyploidization. DNA distributions of the anther-derived monoploid and callus-derived clones in vivo contained peaks corresponding to 1C, 2C, and 4C DNA levels. By comparison, …

Variability For Critical Photoperiod For Tuberization And Tuber Yield Among Monoploid, Anther-Derived Genotypes Of Solanum Phureja, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, F. L. Haynes, K. G. Haynes Jan 1988

Variability For Critical Photoperiod For Tuberization And Tuber Yield Among Monoploid, Anther-Derived Genotypes Of Solanum Phureja, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, F. L. Haynes, K. G. Haynes

Henry R. Owen

Monoploid genotypes (2n = x = 12), derived by anther culture of a diplandrous (2n pollen-producing) clone of Solanum phureja Juz. & Buk., a South American diploid potato species, were examined for their use in germplasm development. Nine monoploid genotypes and the anther-donor genotype were grown in three chambers (10-, 14-, and 18-hr daylengths) to examine the effect of photoperiod on tuber yield and to determine the variability for critical photoperiod for tuberization. Significant differences were found among the monoploid genotypes for tuber weight and tuber number. Longer photoperiod treatments decreased and delayed tuberization. Axillary tuber formation from single-node cuttings …

Contribution Of Cattellian Psychometrics To The Elucidation Of Human Intellectual Structure, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1988

Contribution Of Cattellian Psychometrics To The Elucidation Of Human Intellectual Structure, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The development of a taxonomy of human intellectual structure has received much impetus during the last decade. Findings indicate that there are at least 30-40 primary abilities, rather than only the seven proposed by Thurstone. While this list does not constitute a definitive taxonomy of primary ability structures, nevertheless, much of the ability variance should be accounted for by the presently known factors. At the second stratum level, several major factors (Gf, Gc, Gm, Gps, Gr, Gv, Ga) have been well replicated in numerous studies. Evidence indicates a smaller number of primary ability factors in children and old-aged individuals: Several …

Central Clinical States: An Examination Of The Profile Of Mood States And The Eight State Questionnaire, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1988

Central Clinical States: An Examination Of The Profile Of Mood States And The Eight State Questionnaire, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

Two multidimensional mood-state inventories, the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and the Eight State Questionnaire (8SQJ, were administered to 289 Australian college undergraduates. lntercorrelations for the combined 14 subscales were subjected to a higher-order factor analysis in order to elucidate the central clinical states within the mood-state sphere. Results suggested four major state dimensions pertaining to Neuroticism, Hostility/Anger, Vigor, and a combined Extraversion/Arousal-Fatigue entity. Both three- and jive factor solutions were taken out for comparative purposes. Furthermore, separate higher-order factorings of the POMS on normative samples of 350 male and 650 female psychiatric outpatients were conducted, corroborating three of the …

A First Delineation Of Higher Order Factors In The Children's Motivation Analysis Test (Cmat), Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1988

A First Delineation Of Higher Order Factors In The Children's Motivation Analysis Test (Cmat), Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The Children's Motivation Analysis Test (CMAT) is an objective pencil-and paper instrument designed to measure 10 of the most important motivational dynamic traits among young children. The instrument (which is a downward extension of the School Motivation Analysis Test – SMAT – for use with adolescents), is not only a new addition to the field of motivation measurement, but it is also a major breakthrough for assessing children's motivational structure without the difficulties associated with self-report questionnaires. The present paper reports the results from a higher-order factoring of the CMAT, thereby enhancing the usefulness of the instrument, by enabling both …

What Does The Neuropsychological Category Test Measure?, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1988

What Does The Neuropsychological Category Test Measure?, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The Halstead Category Test of brain dysfunction is one of the most sensitive neuropsychological measures currently available. While the instrument has received widespread use, nevertheless, the exact nature of what it measures has been poorly delineated. The present brief report presents the results of separate factor analyses of the Category Test along with other neuropsychological measures from the Halstead-Reitan battery. Despite considerable differences in samples, as well as in the particular neuropsychological measures included in the separate analyses, the Category Test consistently lined-up with general intellectual and memory components, in each instance.

The lowland Maya supported very high populations in an area with limited water and soil. Much can be learned from studying their sophisticated management practices. Forest gardens and agroforestry helped provide key nutrients, materials, and inputs for improved soil.

Soil Compaction And Its Effect On Alfalfa In Zone Production Systems, Burl D. Meek, Eric A. Rechel, Lyle M. Carter, William R. Detar Jan 1988

Soil Compaction And Its Effect On Alfalfa In Zone Production Systems, Burl D. Meek, Eric A. Rechel, Lyle M. Carter, William R. Detar

William R DeTar

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was grown under two zone production systems (no harvest traffic) (i) preplan! compaction and (ii) no preplant compaction and compared to two systems where traffic was applied (i) to 100% of the area during each harvest and (ii) to lanes simulating the traffic a grower would apply during harvest. The experiment was done in a semiarid area under irrigation on a Wasco sandy loam (coarse-loamy, mixed, nonacid, thermic Xeric Torriorthent), which is easily compacted. Without traffic the soil settled to a bulk density of 1.6 to 1.70 Mg m~\ Traffic increased the bulk density to the …
