The Impacts Of Climate Change Policies On The Transportation Sector Mar 2015

The Impacts Of Climate Change Policies On The Transportation Sector

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

This study examines the impact of carbon tax and its alternative, energy tax, on both the Malaysian economy and the transport sector, using a CGE (Computable General Equilibrium) framework. In order to achieve government revenue neutrality, two schemes for revenue recycling, namely lump-sum transfer and labour tax recycling, are employed. The simulation's results show that the carbon tax policy is more effective than the energy tax policy in reducing carbon emissions; because it is less expensive. The negative impact of the carbon tax, on real GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and investment, is less than the energy tax in both recycling …

Application Of Fano Resonance Effects In Optical Antennas Formed By Regular Clusters Of Nanospheres

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

This paper describes an analytical model developed to study the Fano resonance effect in clusters of spherical plasmonic nanoparticles under local excitation. The model depicted the case of a parallel single dipole emitter that was near-field coupled to a pentamer or heptamer cluster of nanospheres. Spatial polarization and field distributions of the optical states and resonance spectra for these cluster configurations were calculated. It was discovered that polarization interference between the nanoparticles triggered the formation of a second peak in the directivity spectra at 690 nm, and this in turn provided a mechanism for the occurrence of subradiant mode effects. …

Decision Support System For The Glaucoma Using Gabor Transformation Jan 2015

Decision Support System For The Glaucoma Using Gabor Transformation

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the causes of glaucoma which can lead to blindness if not detected and treated at an early stage. Glaucoma symptoms are not always obvious; hence patients seek treatment only when the condition progressed significantly. Early detection and treatment will decrease the chances of vision loss due to glaucoma. This paper proposes a novel automated glaucoma diagnosis method using various features extracted from Gabor transform applied on digital fundus images. In this work, we have used 510 images to classify into normal and glaucoma classes. Various features namely mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis, energy, …

An Accelerated And Accurate Three-Dimensional Ray Tracing Using Red-Black Tree With Facet Mining And Object Bouncing Techniques Jan 2015

An Accelerated And Accurate Three-Dimensional Ray Tracing Using Red-Black Tree With Facet Mining And Object Bouncing Techniques

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Recent trends show that it is a major challenge to predict the exact propagation path accurately and efficiently for three-dimensional (3D) indoor environments. Therefore, this study introduces a new 3D ray tracing algorithm based on a red-black tree with facet mining and object bouncing techniques. The red-black tree data structure offers a faster object searching operation while repeatedly performing intersection tests. On the other hand, extensive ray-facet intersection tests can be eliminated by using object and facet bouncing techniques, whereas the facet mining makes it easier to trace the transmitted ray paths accurately. The proposed method is compared with ray …

Teaching Students To Negotiate Like A Lawyer, John Lande Jan 2012

Teaching Students To Negotiate Like A Lawyer, John Lande

John Lande

Teaching students to negotiate effectively is central to their thinking, acting, and being like good lawyers. Virtually all lawyers spend much of their time negotiating, whether they deal with disputes or transactions. So law school negotiation courses should provide the most realistic possible portrayal of legal negotiation. This essay is intended to help instructors plan and teach negotiation courses, recognizing that every course should be tailored to fit the interests, capabilities, resources, and constraints of the instructors and students. This essay argues that many lawyers engage in “ordinary legal negotiation” (OLN), which is distinct from “romantic” theories of positional and …

Towards Optimized Population Control Efficiency In Space And Time: A Modelling Framework Adapted To A Colonial Waterbird, Alban Guillaumet, Brian S. Dorr, Guiming Wang

Brian S Dorr

The double-crested cormorant is a native North American waterbird that recently underwent a dramatic population expansion. Population control efforts in the USA and Canada attempt to mitigate cormorant damages to natural resources and aquaculture. However, there is currently no coordination among the various stakeholders involved in management activities as well as no attempt to optimize population control efficiency. In this paper, we present for the first time a spatially explicit stage-structured metapopulation model parameterized for the cormorant. We developed simulation tools to get insights into the efficiency gain that can be expected from a better planning of management activities in …

Model Omnibus Privacy Statute, Sam S. Han Ph.D. Jan 2010

Model Omnibus Privacy Statute, Sam S. Han Ph.D.

Sam Han

One of today’s major concerns is how easily digital information can be copied and disseminated. Thus, when one’s private information becomes publicly available in digital format, that information can be readily duplicated and distributed across the globe within seconds. If the disseminated information includes credit card numbers or Social Security numbers, then there is a heightened exposure to identity theft and a host of other privacy-related crimes.

Given the existence of such a digital landmine, laws have been promulgated for various sectors (e.g., financial, healthcare, government, etc.) to protect personally-identifiable information. However, due to differing needs of the various sectors, …

Towards A New Transitional Justice Model: Assessing The Serbian Case, Roozbeh (Rudy) B. Baker

Roozbeh (Rudy) B. Baker

Given the “third wave” of democratic development and entrenchment that has taken hold around the world within the past three decades, the topic of how these transitioning societies cope with the legacy of atrocity and criminality that often accompany authoritarian rule has taken on a fresh salience. The structural, ethical, legal, and political problems faced during such transitions have become the topic of a burgeoning “transitional justice” sub-field within the fields of Law and Political Science. This Article will survey key episodes of transitional justice in various countries since the 1970s, and then apply the lessons gleaned to the transition …

Dynamic Model Of Hiv/Aids Population Of Agra Region, D. K. Chaturvedi

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is spreading rapidly in all regions of the world. But in India it is only 20 years old. Within this short period it has emerged as one of the most serious public health problems in the country, which greatly affect the socio-economical growth. The HIV problem is very complex and ill defined from the modeling point of view. Keeping in the view the complexities of the HIV infection and its transmission, it is difficult to make exact estimates of HIV prevalence. It is more so in the Indian context, with its …

Information Content Of Prey Odor Plumes: What Do Foraging Leach's Storm Petrels Know?, Larry Clark, Pankaj Shah

Larry Clark

Electrophysiological responses to odor have been recorded for concen trations as low as 0.01 ppm for Manx shearwaters Puffinus puffinus and Black-footed Albatrosses Diomedea nigripes, indicating that relative to most birds, procellariiforms have a keen sense of smell (Wenzel and Sieck 1972, cf.clark 1991; Clark and Smeraski 1990; Clark and Mason 1989). Such acuity is not unexpected, given the extensive development of the olfactory anatomy of these species (Bang and Wenzel 1986). Field observations indi cate that Procellariiformes use their sense of smell to locate food (Grubb 1972; Hutchison and Wenzel 1980; Lequette, Verheyden and Jouventin 1989). -_ However, it …
