Most commonly accepted definitions of “college ready” in use today include the phrase “qualified for and able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing college courses without the need for remedial coursework.” The key to attaining this global benchmark is rigorous academic preparation with focus, at all grade levels, on curricular alignment, effective advising, and the provision of the supports that students need to attain their academic goals. Using the high interest level of the Olympics as a theme, this Power Point begins with uncaptioned photographs representing different sports and scenes from the Olympics. Audience members are asked to talk in small groups and then share out about different ways that scene might be related to college and career readiness. When sharing out is completed with the last slide, the slides are repeated a second time, this time on auto-timer and with a caption that tells a story. A third transition, brings up one of the slides (providing students with the equipment) to segue into a training exercise.

At the Counselor Roundtable Session, held on Tuesday, January 24th at the Columbus Renaissance Hotel, attendees were presented, in no particular order, with a list of ten “Hot Topics” to discuss. In the interest of time, attendees voted for the five topics they were most interested in discussing and those are listed below the master list, in order of interest level. Each topic was discussed for only 10 minutes with participants suggesting strategies/solutions. When possible, the person providing the idea/resource is listed by name and school.
