I’M Afraid Of That Water: A Collaborative Ethnography Of A West Virginia Water Crisis, Luke E. Lassiter, Brian A. Hoey, Elizabeth Campbell Mar 2020

I’M Afraid Of That Water: A Collaborative Ethnography Of A West Virginia Water Crisis, Luke E. Lassiter, Brian A. Hoey, Elizabeth Campbell

Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.

On January 9, 2014, residents across Charleston, West Virginia, awoke to an unusual licorice smell in the air and a similar taste in the public drinking water. That evening residents were informed the tap water in tens of thousands of homes, hundreds of businesses, and dozens of schools and hospitals—the water made available to as many as 300,000 citizens in a nine-county region—had been contaminated with a chemical used for cleaning crushed coal. This book tells a particular set of stories about that chemical spill and its aftermath, an unfolding water crisis that would lead to months, even years, of …

White Collar Crime And Morality: How Occupation Shapes Perception, Marshall Schmidt Nov 2019

White Collar Crime And Morality: How Occupation Shapes Perception, Marshall Schmidt

Marshall Schmidt

White-collar crime is on the rise in the United States and globally. The general public has historically been seen as apathetic to white-collar criminals and their crimes; however more recent studies have shown that prior conclusions on perceptions of white-collar criminals may have been inaccurate. In this paper, I examine the role that occupation has in forming perceptions of white-collar criminals. Using Status Characteristics Theory, a structural social psychological theory that links an individual's status characteristics to evaluations of their morality, trustworthiness and competency, vignette experiments are constructed that allow for offender status and offense seriousness in various white collar …

Disciplinary Mythologies: A Rhetorical-Cultural Analysis Of Performance Enhancement Technologies In Sports, John Lamothe Nov 2019

Disciplinary Mythologies: A Rhetorical-Cultural Analysis Of Performance Enhancement Technologies In Sports, John Lamothe

John Lamothe

In sports discourse, the relationship between athletics and technology is often paradoxical. On the one hand, modern sports rely on technology at every level, from training and tracking of players to the equipment and apparel used by athletes to the game strategies and playing fields themselves. Nearly all of these technologies are intended to increase athletic performance on some level. And yet, certain performance enhancement technologies can be criticized for being antithetical to the spirit of sports, which is framed as being a strictly natural and pure human endeavor. Using a rhetorical-cultural methodological approach, popular sports discourse is analyzed to …

Naming, Identity, And Trademark Law, Laura A. Heymann Sep 2019

Naming, Identity, And Trademark Law, Laura A. Heymann

Laura A. Heymann

As the process of creation in the age of digital media becomes more fluid, one pervasive theme has been the desire for attribution: from the creator’s perspective, to receive credit for what one does (and to have credit not falsely attributed) and from the audience’s perspective, to understand the source of material with which one engages. But our norms of attribution reflect some inconsistencies in defining the relationship among name, identity, and authenticity. A blog post by a writer identified only by a pseudonym may prove to be very influential in the court of public opinion, while the use of …

Interferon Priming Is Essential For Human Cd34+ Cell-Derived Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Maturation And Function, A. Lausten, R. O. Bak, C. Krapp, L. Kjær, J. H. Egedahl, C. C. Petersen, S. Pillai, H. Q. Tang, N. Uldbjerg, M. Porteus, N. R. Roan, M. Nyegaard, Paul W. Denton, M. R. Jakobsen

Paul W. Denton

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) are essential for immune competence. Here we show that pDC precursor differentiated from human CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) has low surface expression of pDC markers, and has limited induction of type I interferon (IFN) and IL-6 upon TLR7 and TLR9 agonists treatment; by contrast, cGAS or RIG-I agonists-mediated activation is not altered. Importantly, after priming with type I and II IFN, these precursor pDCs attain a phenotype and functional activity similar to that of peripheral blood-derived pDCs. Data from CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing of HSPCs further show that HSPC-pDCs with genetic modifications can be …

Calling The Tune: Impact Of Domestic Worker’S Earnings On Intra-Household Gender Relations, Gul Ozyegin Sep 2019

Calling The Tune: Impact Of Domestic Worker’S Earnings On Intra-Household Gender Relations, Gul Ozyegin

Gul Ozyegin

Before the Servant Project began its activities, on the initiative of the editor of this book, the long term history of domestic service was still in its beginning stage. This volume is the first wide-ranging attempt to determine the role of domestic workers both in past and present times. Domestic service was of major importance in the multi-secular process of urbanization and socio-economic development of European societies. Today, domestic workers (mainly women) represent an important component of international labour migrations to Western countries. Instead of disappearing, as expected for a long time, paid domestic work is currently experiencing a kind …

The Alt-Right's Use Of President Donald Trump's Twitter Account As A Propaganda Device, Erin Nicole Jorden Sep 2019

The Alt-Right's Use Of President Donald Trump's Twitter Account As A Propaganda Device, Erin Nicole Jorden

Erin Jorden

The long campaign to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act situated President Donald J. Trump in a context where attacks on President Barack Obama’s signature legislation symbolized a broader repudiation of his legacy. Even more than mainstream Republican partisans, the altright blogosphere celebrated the demise of the law to symbolically cleanse the nation of Obama’s influence. Trump attempted to honor his pledge to end Obamacare in his first year of office with his support of the American Health Care Act (March 2017), Better Care Reconciliation Act (July 2017), and the Graham-Cassidy Bill (September 2017). Members of the alt-right reframed …

Locating Gender In Rural Economic Networks, Ann M. Oberhauser Aug 2019

Locating Gender In Rural Economic Networks, Ann M. Oberhauser

Ann Oberhauser

In recent decades, increasing entrepreneurial activities among women have contributed to shifting livelihood strategies at the household, community, and regional scales. In this paper I examine home based work in an economic network to highlight the intersection of gender and economic practices in rural Appalachia. The research demonstrates that these livelihood strategies both construct and are shaped by dynamic material conditions and social processes in place. Economic restructuring in the central Appalachian region has led to the reworking of economic strategies, despite a continued reliance by households on homework and informal activities. The case study for this project as an …

When Pregnancy Is An Injury: Rape, Law, And Culture, Khiara M. Bridges Jul 2019

When Pregnancy Is An Injury: Rape, Law, And Culture, Khiara M. Bridges

Khiara M Bridges

This Article examines criminal statutes that grade more severely sexual assaults that result in pregnancy. These laws, which define pregnancy as a “substantial bodily injury,” run directly counter to positive constructions of pregnancy within culture. The fact that the criminal law, in this instance, reflects this negative, subversive understanding of pregnancy creates the possibility that this idea may be received within culture as a construction of pregnancy that is as legitimate as positive understandings. In this way, these laws create possibilities for the reimagining of pregnancy within law and society. Moreover, these laws recall the argumentation that proponents of abortion …

Citizen Chávez: The State, Social Movements, And Publics, Anthony Peter Spanakos Jul 2019

Citizen Chávez: The State, Social Movements, And Publics, Anthony Peter Spanakos

Anthony Spanakos

Scholars are divided over whether the emancipatory politics promised by new social movements can be attained within civil society or whether seizure of the state apparatus is necessary. The Bolivarian Revolution led by President Hugo Chávez presents a crucial case for examining this question. Chávez’s use of the state apparatus has been fundamental in broadening the concept of citizenship, but this extension of citizenship has occurred alongside the deliberate exclusion of others. This has not only limited its appeal as a citizenship project but created counterpublics that challenge the functioning of the government and its very legitimacy. Analysis of Bolivarianism …

Seodang: A Pilgrimage Toward Knowledge/Action And "Us-Ness" In The Community, Seungho Moon Jun 2019

Seodang: A Pilgrimage Toward Knowledge/Action And "Us-Ness" In The Community, Seungho Moon

Seungho Moon

The purpose of this article is to present a Korean theory of epistemology and to provide an epistemological embodiment of Korean epistemology as it appears in a traditional, local village school called a seodang. A seodang’s curriculum is grounded upon individualized instruction and whole person education and emphasizes mutually respectful relationships that sustain supportive local communities. I have attempted to create an intersection between cultural elements present within Korea’s indigenous knowledge and innovative research methodology by making use of multilingual representations, visual interpretations of the text, and cultural poetry. By weaving together these two stripes of epistemology and methodology, I …

Gender-Based Differences In Consumer E-Commerce Adoption, Craig Van Slyke, France Bélanger, Richard D. Johnson, Ross Hightower Jun 2019

Gender-Based Differences In Consumer E-Commerce Adoption, Craig Van Slyke, France Bélanger, Richard D. Johnson, Ross Hightower

Craig Van Slyke

Among the many characteristics that impact the use of e-commerce, one that has received relatively little attention is gender. Extant evidence suggests that men and women differ in their beliefs regarding the use of information technology-related innovations, including e-commerce. However, less is known about how gender moderates the impact of various beliefs on behavioral intentions. In this study, we use a model derived from diffusion of innovations theory to examine gender differences in the degree to which various beliefs regarding e-commerce impact intentions to make purchases online. Results indicate that gender does moderate the influence of beliefs on use intentions …

A Comparative Study Of Individual Acceptance Of Instant Messaging In The Us And China: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Dahui Li, Patrick Y.K. Chau, Craig Van Slyke Jun 2019

A Comparative Study Of Individual Acceptance Of Instant Messaging In The Us And China: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Dahui Li, Patrick Y.K. Chau, Craig Van Slyke

Craig Van Slyke

The use of computer-mediated communication technology across different countries and cultures is under-investigated in information systems (IS) research. The measurement equivalence issue in cross-cultural IS studies has also not been addressed adequately. This study applies a rigorous structural equation modeling approach (SEM) to compare differences between two groups of college students in the United States and China, by adapting a research model that explains an individual’s use of Instant Messaging (IM). After achieving measurement equivalence across the two groups using SEM, we found that, in their behavioral intention to use IM, Chinese students paid more attention to the effect of …

Examination Of An Emerging Community Of Practice For Instructional Designers: A Descriptive Case Study In A Midwestern University, Jiaqi Yu, Connie Hargrave

Constance P. Hargrave

This study examined the functioning of a group of instructional designers (IDs) in higher education through the lens of Communities of Practice (CoPs). The study particularly focused on whether and how the grouping of experienced and novice IDs operated as an effective CoP from the perspective of novices. The findings indicated that a group of IDs working in a midwestern university was able to cultivate a CoP within a clearly defined domain, a well-established community, and the shared practice with a specific body of knowledge. Particularly from the perspectives of novices, they highlighted the positive impact while participating in the …

Yucatán's Pirate Novels And The Discursive Mayan Rebel In The Nineteenth-Century Criollo Imaginary, Sarah West May 2019

Yucatán's Pirate Novels And The Discursive Mayan Rebel In The Nineteenth-Century Criollo Imaginary, Sarah West

Sarah West

During Yucatán’s Caste War, described in the nineteenth century as the Mayan
rebel uprising against criollo (European-identified) hegemony, more than half
the Yucatán Peninsula’s population either perished or fled, fearing for their lives.
As one of the most violent indigenous uprisings in the Americas, it was also one
of the longest: the Caste Wars tormented the Mexican Southeast for over 50 years.
While historical scholarship has examined the Caste War at length, the study of
the peninsula’s literary production has yet to be considered for the contribution it
makes to fully understanding the sociohistorical context of the war. In this …

Social Coping And Self-Concept Among Young Gifted Students In Ireland And The United States: A Cross-Cultural Study, Jennifer Riedl Cross, Colm O'Reilly, Mihyeon Kim, Sakhavat Mammadov, Tracy L. Cross May 2019

Social Coping And Self-Concept Among Young Gifted Students In Ireland And The United States: A Cross-Cultural Study, Jennifer Riedl Cross, Colm O'Reilly, Mihyeon Kim, Sakhavat Mammadov, Tracy L. Cross

Jennifer Cross

Social coping and self-concept were explored among Irish (n = 115) and American (n = 134) grades 3–8 students. Denying one’s giftedness or the impact it has on peer relationships were associated with poor self-concept in both samples. Among Irish students, denying giftedness was associated with more positive self-concept when paired with a high activity level. Engaging in many activities in the US sample and helping one’s peers in the Irish sample were positive predictors of academic self-concept. Findings suggest young gifted students may benefit from learning more about their exceptional abilities and their impact on peers. They should also …

Sex Sells: How Advertising Agencies' Commodification Of Image Affects Older Women In Advertising, Diane Fittipaldi May 2019

Sex Sells: How Advertising Agencies' Commodification Of Image Affects Older Women In Advertising, Diane Fittipaldi

Diane Fittipaldi

The purpose of this study was to understand how advertising agency culture affects the long-term careers of women account executives as they age. The primary research questions were: 1) How do self-image and cultural stereotypes affect the decision to enter the advertising business; 2) How do women navigate the male-dominated culture of the ad agency; 3) What strategies do women use to get ahead in advertising; 4) How do women survive long term in a culture that favors youth? Qualitative data was collected via unstructured, one-on-one, in-depth interviews with a nationally sourced sample 15 female advertising account executives aged 40 …

Millennials' National And Global Identities As Drivers Of Materialism And Consumer Ethnocentrism, Mario V. González Fuentes May 2019

Millennials' National And Global Identities As Drivers Of Materialism And Consumer Ethnocentrism, Mario V. González Fuentes

Mario Gonzalez Fuentes

A major effect of globalization is one that occurs on the self-concept. This is especially the case for young consumers, and particularly for millennials. Despite this cohort’s idiosyncrasies, little attention has been paid to the study of their consumer identities, an important aspect of self-concept. The current research addresses this gap by examining the way millennial consumers’ global and national identities help explain two attitudinal outcomes associated with globalization: materialism and consumer ethnocentrism. Data were collected from millennials in two distinct socio-cultural contexts. A key finding suggests that distinct contexts (i.e., collectivist and ethnically homogeneous vs. individualistic and ethnically diverse) …

Review Of Lejeune, Maud. Pourtraits Divers De Jean De Tournes: Edition Critique Et Fac-Similé Du Tirage De 1556, Kelly Digby Peebles

Kelly Peebles

Pourtraits divers is an unusual book of illustrations, printed in octavo format in the Lyonnais workshop of Jean de Tournes. A first edition contains no text apart from the place of publication, printer and date (Lyon: Jean de Tournes, 1556). A second edition (1557) also bears the title Pourtraits divers. The work in question is a collaborative project between printer Jean de Tournes and illustrator Bernard Salomon (aka Le Petit Bernard), both noted figures in the print culture of Renaissance Lyon. Maud Lejeune’s study, a book version of the thesis written for her maîtrise, offers a facsimile of the 1556 …
