Impact Of The Choosing The Best Program In Communities Committed To Abstinence Education, Lisa Lieberman, Haiyan Su
Impact Of The Choosing The Best Program In Communities Committed To Abstinence Education, Lisa Lieberman, Haiyan Su
Lisa Lieberman
States vary in standards for sex education, some requiring an emphasis on abstinence. Schools seek to identify curricula that reflect local community values and meet state standards. Choosing the Best (CTB), a classroom-based abstinence education curriculum, has been implemented in 75 Georgia school districts since 1995. CTB Inc., sought to determine if this popular program had an impact on abstinence attitudes, intentions, and behavior. Six Georgia public schools (1,143 ninth graders) participated in the study in 2009-2010. Four randomly assigned schools received the CTB curriculum, taught by trained CTB staff. Two control schools received their usual textbook-based abstinence lessons. Surveys …

Economics As A Cultural System, Raymond Benton
Economics As A Cultural System, Raymond Benton
Raymond Benton Jr.
This article is an attempt to think about economic theory. The vehicle for thinking about it will be anthropology's concept of culture; the end result will be to suggest that economics is a cultural system, more specifically, that economics is a sacred cultural system. In order to give expression to this view it will be necessary to first sketch the concept of culture as created and historically transmitted systems of symbols and meanings. The argument has been brief and suggestive rather than long and decisive; more exploratory than conclusive. If it is correct, or at least correct in its orientation, …
Producing An Insightful Research Paper: Some Elements To Consider, Craig Scott
Producing An Insightful Research Paper: Some Elements To Consider, Craig Scott
Craig M. Scott
This paper originated as a lecture to students pursuing the Erasmus Mundus Master of Laws in Transnational Trade and Finance Law at the Universidad de Deusto, Bilbao, Spain. Although generally relevant for researchers in a variety of contexts up to and including writing book monographs, it is primarily aimed at graduate students doing major papers, theses or dissertations and undergraduate (including first-degree law) students doing research essays in upper-year seminars. The pointers found in the paper must accordingly be modified, mutatis mutandi, according to the nature of the research project, including the time available in which to complete it. The …
Exploring Gloria Anzaldúa’S Methodology In Borderlands/La Frontera—The New Mestiza, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce
Exploring Gloria Anzaldúa’S Methodology In Borderlands/La Frontera—The New Mestiza, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce
Jorge Capetillo-Ponce
Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands/La Frontera--The New Mestiza does not fit into the usual critical categories simply because she follows inclination of interest, as opposed to working at achieving systematization. Not only does she shift continually from analysis to meditation, and refuse to recognize disciplinary barriers, but she speaks poetically even when dealing with cultural, political, and social issues. Indeed her method, like Simmel's, is more akin to "style" in art than it is to "analysis" or "inquiry" in the social sciences. A critic proclaims her/his own incompetence, however, if the mere fact that a text has a certain interdisciplinary quality scares …

Brand-Extension Or Self-Extension? Using Avatars To Study The Effects Of Self-Image Congruence On Brand-Extension Evaluation, Mitchell Hamilton
Brand-Extension Or Self-Extension? Using Avatars To Study The Effects Of Self-Image Congruence On Brand-Extension Evaluation, Mitchell Hamilton
Mitchell Hamilton
This dissertation investigates the effect of self-image on brand-extension evaluation in the context where self-images are influenced by an avatar. Prior studies have demonstrated the positive effects of self-image congruence on brand evaluation. The brand-extension literature has found that the congruency between the parent-brand and the extension influences the brand-extension evaluation, with moderately incongruent extensions having a stronger effect than either highly incongruent or highly congruent extensions. Missing in the past research is the role of congruency in the self-image/brand relationship, within a brand-extension evaluation context. The brand-extension evaluation literature seems to suggest that, while evaluating a brand-extension, the consumer's …

Review Of The Book Prospects For Faculty In The Arts And Sciences, Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] Very few books by economists are announced to the world in a front page story in the New York Times. However, Prospects for Faculty in the Arts and Sciences by William G. Bowen and Julie Ann Sosa was (see Fiske) and this honor is well deserved. Prospects may well be the most important analysis of the academic labor market to appear since Alan Cartter's pioneering work in the mid-1970s.

Introduction To Doctoral Education And The Faculty Of The Future, Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Introduction To Doctoral Education And The Faculty Of The Future, Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] Concern has been expressed, however, that the growing enrollment of foreign students in American PhD programs "crowds out" potential American citizen PhD holders and discourages them from pursuing PhD study. On the other hand, the aftermath of 9/11, the growth of research infrastructure and research support in other nations, and the growth of other nations' higher education systems all cast doubt on the ability of the United States to continue to rely on foreign PhD holders to meet our nation's need for scientific researchers and to fill future faculty positions. Given all of these issues, in October 2006 the …

Changing The Education Of Scholars: An Introduction To The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’S Graduate Education Initiative, Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Harriet Zuckerman, Jeffrey A. Groen, Sharon M. Brucker
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] In 1991 the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation launched the Graduate Education Initiative (GEI) to improve the structure and organization of PhD programs in the humanities and social sciences and to combat the high rates of student attrition and long time to degree completion prevailing in these fields. While attrition and time to completion were deemed to be important in and of themselves, and of great significance to degree seekers, they were also seen more broadly as indicators of the effectiveness of graduate programs. An array of characteristics of doctoral programs was earmarked as likely contributors to high attrition and …

The Graduate Education Initiative: Description And Preliminary Findings, Ronald Ehrenberg, Harriet Zuckerman, Jeffrey Groen, Sharon Brucker
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] In1991 the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation launched the Graduate Education Initiative (hereafter GEI) to improve the structure and organization of PhD programs in the humanities and social sciences. Such changes were seen as necessary to combat high rates of student attrition and long times-to-degree in these programs. While attrition and time-to-degree were deemed to be important in and of themselves, and of great significance to degree seekers, they were also seen more broadly as indicators of the effectiveness of graduate programs. Several characteristics of doctoral programs were earmarked as contributing to high attrition and long degree time, including: unclear …
Applying Authentic Learning To Social Science: A Learning Design For An Inter-Disciplinary Sociology Subject, Fiona Borthwick, Sue Bennett, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Elaine Huber
Applying Authentic Learning To Social Science: A Learning Design For An Inter-Disciplinary Sociology Subject, Fiona Borthwick, Sue Bennett, Geraldine E. Lefoe, Elaine Huber
Geraldine Lefoe
As universities move towards more vocationally oriented courses, students expect pedagogic practices that make closer ties to potential workplaces. The pedagogical approach of authentic learning is well suited to this purpose as it proposes an apprenticeship-type model and a model that brings simulated work tasks into the classroom. In the social sciences, authentic learning is under-utilised and under-theorised as these subject areas do not fit easily into these models. An alternative model of authentic learning aims to offer students opportunities to .enmind. the requirements of a discipline, be critically reflective about that discipline, and to develop the skills to bring …

Every chapter begins with the Algebra Toolbox, which reviews the skills and concepts necessary to master the material ahead. This new full-color edition offers a greater number of technology tips, and the content has been reorganized to accommodate a wide range of course …
Toward A Theory Of Procedural Justice For Juveniles, Tamar R. Birckhead
Toward A Theory Of Procedural Justice For Juveniles, Tamar R. Birckhead
Tamar R Birckhead
Courts and legislatures have long been reluctant to make use of the data, findings, and recommendations generated by other disciplines when determining questions of legal procedure affecting juveniles, particularly when the research has been produced by social scientists. However, given the United States Supreme Court’s recent invocation of developmental psychology in Roper v. Simmons, which invalidated the juvenile death penalty, there is reason to believe that such resistance is waning. In 2005 the Simmons Court found, inter alia, that based on research on adolescent development, juveniles are not as culpable as adults and, therefore, cannot be classified among the “worst …
The Four Literatures Of Social Science, Diana M. Hicks
The Four Literatures Of Social Science, Diana M. Hicks
Diana Hicks
This chapter reviews bibliometric studies of the social sciences and humanities. SSCI bibliometrics will work reasonably well in economics and psychology whose literature shares many characteristics with science, and less well in sociology, characterized by a typical social science literature. The premise of the chapter is that quantitative evaluation of research output faces severe methodological difficulties in fields whose literature differs in nature from scientific literature. Bibliometric evaluations are based on international journal literature indexed in the SSCI, but social scientists also publish books, and write for national journals and for the non-scholarly press. These literatures form distinct, yet partially …
