Titanium Oxide Nanotubes: Synthesis, Properties And Applications For Solar Energy Harvesting, Eugen Panaitescu Dec 2013

Titanium Oxide Nanotubes: Synthesis, Properties And Applications For Solar Energy Harvesting, Eugen Panaitescu

Eugen Panaitescu

Titanium oxide (titania) nanotubes, although relatively recently discovered (less than 15 years ago), have already shown great promise regarding solar energy harvesting applications, exhibiting very good photocatalytic and photovoltaic properties. An alternative anodization route for production of titania nanotubes at the surface of a titanium foil using chloride ions as catalyst instead of the routinely used highly toxic fluorides, is presented in this work. Moreover, the fabrication parameters are extensively studied, thus providing both an insight into the synthesis mechanism and hints towards possible process optimization routes. Although not forming uniformly over the sample surface and lacking long range ordering, …

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS 2011) is an international study directed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). In Australia, TIMSS was managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), and funded by the Australian and state and territory governments.

The goal of TIMSS is to provide comparative information about educational achievement across countries to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. It also provides comparative perspectives on trends in achievement in the context of different educational systems, school organisational approaches and instructional practices and to enable this, TIMSS collects …

Measuring The Mechanical Properties Of Living Cells Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Nancy Burnham, Gawain Thomas, Terri Camesano, Qi Wen Jun 2013

Measuring The Mechanical Properties Of Living Cells Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Nancy Burnham, Gawain Thomas, Terri Camesano, Qi Wen

Nancy A. Burnham

Mechanical properties of cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) play important roles in many biological processes including stem cell differentiation, tumor formation, and wound healing. Changes in stiffness of cells and ECM are often signs of changes in cell physiology or diseases in tissues. Hence, cell stiffness is an index to evaluate the status of cell cultures. Among the multitude of methods applied to measure the stiffness of cells and tissues, micro-indentation using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) provides a way to reliably measure the stiffness of living cells. This method has been widely applied to characterize the micro-scale stiffness for …

The Teaching/Research Nexus And Internationalisation: An Action Research Project In Radiation Physics, Susanna Guatelli, Catherine Layton, Dean Cutajar, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld Jun 2013

The Teaching/Research Nexus And Internationalisation: An Action Research Project In Radiation Physics, Susanna Guatelli, Catherine Layton, Dean Cutajar, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Anatoly Rozenfeld

This paper attempts to unpack the teaching and learning experiences of academics and students when a new way of teaching radiation physics was introduced. In an attempt to articulate the University of Wollongong’s commitment to the enhancement of the teaching/research nexus and to the development of learning communities, staff of the School of Physics in the Faculty of Engineering at University of Wollongong (UOW) implemented an action research project teaching scientific computing methodologies used in radiation physics to a combined laboratory class of postgraduates and undergraduates. The design of the practical laboratory classes took account of the expected heterogeneous computing …

Doppler Ultrasound And Maternal Erythrocyte Fragility, G. Bause, Jennifer Niebyl, R. Sanders May 2013

Doppler Ultrasound And Maternal Erythrocyte Fragility, G. Bause, Jennifer Niebyl, R. Sanders

Jennifer R Niebyl

Maternal erythrocyte fragility was studied in eight controls and in 16 women exposed to Doppler ultrasound monitoring during labor. Blood samples were taken before and after Doppler monitoring and no significant change in erythrocyte fragility was seen, although there was a trend toward increased fragility in patients exposed continuously for more than seven hours.

Neutron Interferometric Method To Provide Improved Constraints On Non-Newtonian Gravity At The Nanometer Scale, Geoffrey Greene, Vladimir Gudkov Apr 2013

Neutron Interferometric Method To Provide Improved Constraints On Non-Newtonian Gravity At The Nanometer Scale, Geoffrey Greene, Vladimir Gudkov

Geoffrey Greene

In recent years, an energetic experimental program has set quite stringent limits on a possible “non-1/r2” dependence on gravity at short length scales. This effort has been largely driven by the predictions of theories based on compactification of extra spatial dimensions. It is characteristic of many such theories that the strength and length scales of such anomalous gravity are not clearly determined from first principles. As a result, it is productive to extend the current limits the range and strength of such hypothetical interactions. As a heavy, neutral, and (almost) stable particle, the neutron provides an ideal probe for the …

Does It Matter Which Citation Tool Is Used To Compare The H-Index Of A Group Of Highly Cited Researchers?, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Hadi Farhadi, Hadi Salehi, Melor Md Yunus, Arezoo Aghaei Chadegani, Maryam Farhadi, Masood Fooladi Mar 2013

Does It Matter Which Citation Tool Is Used To Compare The H-Index Of A Group Of Highly Cited Researchers?, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Hadi Farhadi, Hadi Salehi, Melor Md Yunus, Arezoo Aghaei Chadegani, Maryam Farhadi, Masood Fooladi

h-index retrieved by citation indexes (Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science) is used to measure the scientific performance and the research impact studies based on the number of publications and citations of a scientist. It also is easily available and may be used for performance measures of scientists, and for recruitment decisions. The aim of this study is to investigate the difference between the outputs and results from these three citation databases namely Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science based upon the h-index of a group of highly cited researchers (Nobel Prize winner scientist). The purposive sampling method …

Characterizing Scientific Production And Consumption In Physics, Qian Zhang, Nicola Perra, Bruno Gonçalves, Fabio Ciulla, Alessandro Vespignani Mar 2013

Characterizing Scientific Production And Consumption In Physics, Qian Zhang, Nicola Perra, Bruno Gonçalves, Fabio Ciulla, Alessandro Vespignani

Alessandro Vespignani

We analyze the entire publication database of the American Physical Society generating longitudinal (50 years) citation networks geolocalized at the level of single urban areas. We define the knowledge diffusion proxy, and scientific production ranking algorithms to capture the spatiotemporal dynamics of Physics knowledge worldwide. By using the knowledge diffusion proxy we identify the key cities in the production and consumption of knowledge in Physics as a function of time. The results from the scientific production ranking algorithm allow us to characterize the top cities for scholarly research in Physics. Although we focus on a single dataset concerning a specific …
