Power Quality Survey Factor Analysis Using Multivariable Linear Regression (Mvlr), Chandana Herath, Victor J. Gosbell, Sarath Perera, David A. Stirling

Dr David Stirling

During the past two decades, there has been a considerable number of Power Quality (PQ) monitoring programs completed throughout the world. The information collected during these surveys can provide a detailed picture of the expected electrical environment help utilities to plan their future networks in relation to power quality performance. The mass of data gathered for a sample of sites of a large-scale power quality (PQ) survey of this nature has the potential to reveal good and bad influences on power quality if an appropriate procedure for analysis can be determined. If it is known which characteristics are more important …

A Survey And Tutorial Of Rfid Anti-Collision Protocols, Dheeraj Klair, Kwan-Wu Chin, Raad Raad

Dr Raad Raad

RFID technologies have revolutionized the asset tracking industry, with applications ranging from automated checkout to monitoring the medication intakes of elderlies. In all these applications, fast, and in some cases energy efficient, tag reading is desirable, especially with increasing tag numbers. In practice, tag reading protocols face many problems. A key one being tag collision, which occurs when multiple tags reply simultaneously to a reader. As a result, an RFID reader experiences low tag reading performance, and wastes valuable energy. Therefore, it is important that RFID application developers are aware of current tag reading protocols. To this end, this paper …

Web-Based Surveys And Assessment, Parviz Doulai, Ray Stace

Dr Parviz Doulai

This paper describes methods of on-line assessment and students’ survey, which utilize the Web interfaces and use them in conjunction with the Internet. To find the most appropriate alternative methods of students’ assessment and survey a variety of commercial and public domain tools was used to implement the following two basic tasks: 1. ‘Student Suggestion Box’ where students evaluate the subject and make comments and suggestions on the subject and its assessment; and 2. a partially AutoMark short assessment task, containing two paragraph questions and three multiple choice questions, that offers final marks to the instructor/students and provides prompt feedback …

Interactive Effects Of Networked Publics And Social Media On Transforming The Public Sphere: A Survey Of Iran's Leaderless 'Social Media Revolution', Akemi Chatfield, Hans Scholl, Reza Akbari, Nima Mirzayi Dec 2012

Interactive Effects Of Networked Publics And Social Media On Transforming The Public Sphere: A Survey Of Iran's Leaderless 'Social Media Revolution', Akemi Chatfield, Hans Scholl, Reza Akbari, Nima Mirzayi

Dr Akemi Chatfield

It has been argued that hierarchical 'command and control' leadership is required to coordinate massive and rapid military or disaster response. Against this, the concept of leaderless 'social media revolution' refers to the wide-spread use of Web 2.0 social media by ordinary citizens to transform the public sphere and engage in collective political action, including coordinating massive and rapid protests against government. However, conceptual and empirical research efforts remain scarce to date. This research draws on the emergent perspective on causal agency in effecting change in social systems to examine our research proposition that the interactive effects of networked publics …

We undertook a descriptive baseline survey in order to understand the background and needs of SARNet members and to tailor network activities towards those needs. Methods A questionnaire survey, assessing members' professional background, research experience, …

A Survey Of Some Mathematical Results For Highly Frictional Granular Materials, Grant Cox, Ngamta Thamwattana, James Hill Dec 2012

A Survey Of Some Mathematical Results For Highly Frictional Granular Materials, Grant Cox, Ngamta Thamwattana, James Hill

Dr Ngamta Thamwattana

Recently the authors have exploited the notion of a highly frictional granular material to derive analytical solutions for certain problems. Generally, we use the term highly frictional granular material to refer to those materials which possess an angle of internal friction such that the trigonometric sine of the angle of internal friction is close to unity. There are many granular materials for which this is the case, such as black and brown coal and limestone powder. For such materials formal perturbation solutions can be derived for which the zeroth-order solution corresponds to an angle of internal friction precisely equal to …

Coordination In Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks: A Survey, Hamidreza Salarian, Kwan-Wu Chin, Fazel Naghdy

Associate Professor Kwan-Wu Chin

"Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks (WSANs) have a myriad of applications, ranging from pacifying bulls to controlling light intensity in homes automatically. An important aspect of WSANs is coordination. Unlike conventional Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), sensor and actuator nodes must work hand-in-hand to collect and forward data, and act on any sensed data collaboratively, promptly and reliably. To this end, this paper reviews current state-of-the-art techniques that address this fundamental problem: More specifically, we review techniques in the following areas: (i) sensor-actuator coordination, (ii) routing protocols, (iii) transport protocols, and (iv) actuator-to-actuator coordination protocols. We provide an extensive qualitative comparison of their …

Our Retirement In Their Hands: A User Perspective, Cotinne Cortese, David Aylward, John Glynn Oct 2012

Our Retirement In Their Hands: A User Perspective, Cotinne Cortese, David Aylward, John Glynn

John J Glynn

This research reports on the results of a survey of Australian retirees which provide information on attitudes surrounding financial planning advice before, at or after retirement. These results demonstrate that, despite government initiatives aimed at enhancing consumer confidence in the financial services market, most retirees continue to feel dissatisfied with, and lack confidence in, the services provided by their financial advisors. This suggests an increased role for financial planners to provide not only the additional information required under government policy, but also to provide information that is understandable and useful to the retirees that rely on it.

Librarians' Roles In Evidence-Based Dentistry Education: A Review Of Literature And A Survey In North America, Xiaomei Gu

Xiaomei Gu

This study describes the current roles of dental librarians in Evidence-based Dentistry (EBD) education including their perceptions of EBD and barriers to their involvement. A Web-based survey was distributed to the dental librarians in North America, with a 71% response rate. The results showed that the majority of dental librarians are playing multiple and diverse roles in EBD education. The most frequently cited barrier to their involvement is the low level of interest from the dental faculty/student/school. Most dental librarians felt competent in supporting EBD, although continuing education needs in both EBD and teaching skills were pointed out.

Preparing For An Ageing Population: A Survey Of Older Patients' Attitudes To General Practice Registrars, Andrew D. Bonney, Sandra C. Jones, Lyn Phillipson, Donald C. Iverson Jun 2012

Preparing For An Ageing Population: A Survey Of Older Patients' Attitudes To General Practice Registrars, Andrew D. Bonney, Sandra C. Jones, Lyn Phillipson, Donald C. Iverson

Don C. Iverson

The ageing population makes it imperative to provide appropriate training for general practice registrars (GPRs) in the community-based care of older patients. However, data suggest that older patients may be less willing to consult GPRs for chronic/complex care; adversely affecting training opportunities and potentially the satisfaction of older patients in training practices. This cross-sectional study was undertaken to investigate this concern in the Australian context and develop models of older patient-GPR interaction that are acceptable to patients.
