Jurassic Eolian Oolite On A Paleohigh In The Sundance Sea, Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, Zoran Kilibarda, David Loope

David B. Loope

Aeolian limestones are widespread in the Quaternary record and have been identified in outcrops and cores of late Palaeozoic strata. These rocks have been interpreted as a low latitude signal of glacio-eustatic sea level fluctuations and have not been previously reported from the Mesozoic or from other episodes of earth history generally believed to have been non-glacial. Numerous lenticular bodies of cross-stratified oolite lie near the contact between the lower and upper members of the mudstone-dominated lower Sundance Formation (Middle and Upper Jurassic) in the Bighorn Basin of north-central Wyoming, USA. The lenses, up to 12 m thick, contain sedimentary …

Guilty Property: A Qualitative Analysis Of Civil Forfeiture, Brian Johnson, Greg Warchol Apr 2014

Guilty Property: A Qualitative Analysis Of Civil Forfeiture, Brian Johnson, Greg Warchol

Greg Warchol

The objective of this article is to explore how property seized under the federal civil-judicial forfeiture laws for drug law violations is proceeded against by the government. The methodology is primarily exploratory. A sample of federal civil-judicial drug forfeiture cases is described and then analyzed in regard to the relative importance of the cases’ characteristics. The findings raise serious questions about the use of this policy and the government’s intent behind forfeiture. Implications and suggestions for future research are also presented.

Variational Inequalities For Marketable Pollution Permits With Technological Investment Opportunities: The Case Of Oligopolistic Markets, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda Sep 2012

Variational Inequalities For Marketable Pollution Permits With Technological Investment Opportunities: The Case Of Oligopolistic Markets, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda

Kathy K Dhanda

In this paper, we develop a variational inequality framework for the modeling, qualitative analysis, and computation of equilibrium patterns in multiproduct, multipollutant oligopolistic markets with marketable pollution permits along with opportunities for investment in production technology and/or emission-abatement technology. The model deals explicitly with spatial differentiation and also guarantees that the imposed environmental standards are met through the initial allocation of licenses. An algorithm is proposed, with convergence results, to compute the profitmaximized quantities of oligopolistic firms' products and the quantities of emissions, along with the equilibrium allocation of licenses and their prices, as well as the optimal investments in …

Why Thoughts Are Better Than Music Or Emily Dickinson's Fascicle 18 As A Lyric Sequence, Robert Bray Dec 1997

Why Thoughts Are Better Than Music Or Emily Dickinson's Fascicle 18 As A Lyric Sequence, Robert Bray

Robert Bray

Recently, an old argument concerning the existence of God has made a comeback: the "Argument from Design." Some scientists, physicists and biologists especially, have declared that the cosmos, from tiniest micro to uttermost macro, not only reveals a design, but one so complex as to be impossible by accident, hence entailing a designer. From perceived real design they infer an imperceptible ideal designer-God the Creator. Invert this and you have the position in which I find myself while studying Emily Dickinson's "fascicles" (a frankly ugly and pseudo-technical name for a beautiful phenomenon in poetry). The physical evidence of the sewn, …

A Linkage Map Of The Canine Genome, Cathryn Mellersh, Amelia Langston, Gregory Acland, Melissa Fleming, Kunal Ray, Neil Weigand, Leigh Francisco, Mark Gibbs, Gustavo Aguirre, Elaine Ostrander Dec 1997

A Linkage Map Of The Canine Genome, Cathryn Mellersh, Amelia Langston, Gregory Acland, Melissa Fleming, Kunal Ray, Neil Weigand, Leigh Francisco, Mark Gibbs, Gustavo Aguirre, Elaine Ostrander

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

A genetic linkage map of the canine genome has been developed by typing 150 microsatellite markers using 17 three-generation pedigrees, composed of 163 F2individuals. One hundred and thirty-nine markers were linked to at least one other marker with a lod score ≥ 3.0, identifying 30 linkage groups. The largest chromosome had 9 markers spanning 106.1 cM. The average distance between markers was 14.03 cM, and the map covers an estimated 2073 cM. Eleven markers were informative on the mapping panel, but were unlinked to any other marker. These likely represent single markers located on small, distinct canine chromosomes. This map …

Construction Of A Panel Of Canine–Rodent Hybrid Cell Lines For Use In Partitioning Of The Canine Genome, Amelia A. Langston, Cathryn S. Mellersh, Cassandra L. Neal, Kunal Ray, Gregory M. Acland, Mark Gibbs, Gustavo D. Aguirre, R.E. K. Fournier, Elaine A. Ostrander Dec 1997

Construction Of A Panel Of Canine–Rodent Hybrid Cell Lines For Use In Partitioning Of The Canine Genome, Amelia A. Langston, Cathryn S. Mellersh, Cassandra L. Neal, Kunal Ray, Gregory M. Acland, Mark Gibbs, Gustavo D. Aguirre, R.E. K. Fournier, Elaine A. Ostrander

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

We have constructed a collection of canine–rodent microcell hybrid cell lines by fusion of canine fibroblast microcell donors with immortalized rodent recipient cells. Characterization of the hybrid cell lines using a combination of fluorescencein situhybridization and PCR analysis of canine microsatellite repeat sequences allowed selection of a panel of hybrids in which most canine chromosomes are represented. Approximately 90% of genetic markers and genes that were tested could be assigned to 1 of 31 anonymous canine chromosome groups, based on common patterns of retention in the hybrid set. Many of these putative chromosome groups have now been validated …

Dimethyl (±)-(1s*,2r*,3s*)-[3-Phenyl-1-(N-Phenylcarbamoyloxy)-2, 3-Epoxypropyl]-Phosphonate, T. Boehlow, A. De La Cruz, N. P. Rath, C. D. Spilling

Christopher Spilling

The crystal structure of the racemic title compound, C18H20NO6P, m.p. 428-431 K, has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The title compound consists of a tetrahedral P atom bonded to two methoxy groups, and an alkyl chain. The alkyl chain was substituted at position 1 with a carbamate and with an epoxide at positions 2 and 3. The relative configuration of the 1-carbamate and 2,3-epoxide substituents was confirmed as anti (1S,2R,3S). The crystal structure contains an enantiomeric pair with two intermolecular hydrogen bonds in a 14-membered ring. The hydrogen bonds are formed between the P=O of one enantiomer and the N-H …

Book Review - Multiculturalism And "The Politics Of Recognition", Kathleen Manning, Charles Taylor

Kathleen Manning

A diverse cultural presence on campus, political rankling among liberals and conservative, and media reprots of campus activism prevent higher education administrators from ignoring the current national debate concerning multiculturalism. College and university administrators, particularly in the area of student affairs, have taken the lead to bring the issue front and center in university life.

How do rats and squirrels decide how much to hoard for the winter when they do not know how long the winter will be? This paper argues that natural selection is likely to result in random differences in the attitudes toward systemic risk by genetically identical individuals.

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell Nov 1997

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell

Jeffrey Keisler

The quality and value of an area depend primarily on what is found within
its designated boundaries. To determine the value of such areas in terms of boundaries,
we have developed a methodology for integrating multi-attribute utility functions with
spatial analysis so that desirable, or appropriate, boundaries can be determined on the
basis of the goals and objectives for the park. The key to successful evaluation is the
development of measures for what decision makers value, rather than merely using
what is easily measured. In a detailed example for planning of national parks, the
fundamental objectives are conservation and societal …
