Racial Protest, Identity, Words And Form In Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", Pierre A. Walker Sep 1995

Racial Protest, Identity, Words And Form In Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", Pierre A. Walker

Pierre Walker

There is difficulty in critically reading African American literature as apolitical text; all create a political impact whether this is the initial and conscious motive or not. Maya Angelou's autobiography is one such case. Though written in response to an aesthetic challenge - that an autobiography cannot be written as literature (from the Formalist/New Critics point of view) - Angelou's organic unity became a vehicle for her political protest. A critical reading shows how she was able to achieve this.

Drive For Thinness In Black And White Preadolescent Girls, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, George B. Schreiber, Kathleen M. Pike, Denise E. Wilfley, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

This study examined racial differences in drive for thinness, a motivational variable implicated in the etiology of eating disorders. Subjects included 613 black and white preadolescent girls from one of three National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Growth and Health Study centers. Instruments included the Drive for Thinness Scale, a Criticism about Weight scale, the Self-Perception Profile for Children, a Sexual Maturation index, and 3-day food diaries. Black girls reported significantly greater drive for thinness than white girls. Drive for thinness was significantly associated with adiposity in both groups; additional predictors included criticism about weight for black girls and …

Between Irua And "Female Genital Mutilation" : Feminist Human Rights Discourse And The Cultural Divide, Hope Lewis Mar 1995

Between Irua And "Female Genital Mutilation" : Feminist Human Rights Discourse And The Cultural Divide, Hope Lewis

Hope Lewis

“Irua,” or female genital surgery (“FGS”), involves the most private aspects of individual female physical and cultural identity. Yet, the health risks caused by FGS raised concern in cultures in which FGS is not traditionally practiced. There has been extensive dialogue regarding the implications of FGS for cross-cultural feminist approaches to human rights. This Article examines the controversy over FGS terminology as it reflects more complex debates over FGS as a violation of international human rights. It further assesses the reasons offered to justify Western feminists’ participation in cross-cultural strides to address FGS through human rights law. In addition, the …

Patriarchy In Old Mexico, Paul J. Rich

Fraternal studies are adjacent to gender studies -- fraternal societies have often been exclusively male or female, and research into such societies inevitably raises questions of gender. This review of Stern's landmark book sustains that position.

Are Nanophase Grain Boundaries Anomalous?, Paul G. Sanders, E. A. Stern, R. W. Siegel, M. Newville, D. Haskel

Paul Sanders

The grain boundary regions of nanophase Cu metal are investigated using the x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) technique. Typical samples made by standard techniques need to be greatly thinned if measured in transmission in order to eliminate experimental artifacts which erroneously lower the apparent coordination number. To avoid this problem the samples were measured by the total electron yield technique. The results indicate a grain boundary structure which, on the average, is similar to that in conventional polycrystalline Cu, contrary to previous XAFS measurements made in transmission which indicated a lower coordination number.

Students' Perception Of Learning In Biology 1, E Martens, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

After collecting students' self-ratings on various study related tasks from 291 first year students enrolled in Biology in 1993, a theoretical model of the way in which (a) general student background factors such as sex, age and language at home and (b) particular factors concerned with students' learning and writing difficulties operate to influence end-of-year Biology results was developed. The proposed model was then tested using Partial Least Squares Path Analysis (PLSPATH) to examine the degree to which the theoretical model was an appropriate representation of the data. Results showed that university entrance score, gender, first year difficulties and learning …

Ìgbò Enwē Ezè: Monarchical Power Vs The Democratic Ideal In Igbo Oral Narratives (Chapter 5), Chukwuma Azuonye

Chukwuma Azuonye

Azuonye sets out, through the representation of kings in Igbo tales, a picture on the one hand of legitimate authority and on the other of the abuse of power, two sides of the same coin. His discussion is directed along two lines. First, and most directly, he examines the nature of the picture of power relations painted in the tales insofar as it presents a 'democratic ideal'. Second, Azuonye sees the painting of that picture as part of the propagation of competing visions, 'the power of oral literature to sustain, through the selective process of mythic filtering, a particular type …

Seizure Threshold In Electroconvulsive Therapy: I. Initial Seizure Threshold, C. Edward Coffey, Joseph Lucke, Richard D. Weiner, Andrew D. Krystal, Michael Aque

Richard R Weiner

We measured initial seizure threshold by means of a structured stimulus dosage titration procedure in a clinical sample of 111 depressed patients undergoing brief-pulse, constantcurrent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Initial seizure threshold was approximately 60 millicoumbs (mc) (10 Joules) on average, but varied widely (6-fold) across patients. Initial seizure threshold was predicted by four variables: electrode placement (higher with bilateral), gender (higher in men), age (higher with increasing age), and dynamic impedance (inverse relationship). Use of neuroleptic medication was associated with a lower seizure threshold. EEG seizure duration was inversely related to initial seizure threshold, but no other relations with seizure …

Comparative Education In North America: The Search For Other Through The Escape From Self?, Irving Epstein Dec 1994

Comparative Education In North America: The Search For Other Through The Escape From Self?, Irving Epstein

Irving Epstein

Few would argue with the contention that comparative education is at a crossroads. Not unlike the traditional social science fields, the social foundations sub-disciplines generally and comparative education in particular, have suffered as a result of general trends that have affected North American academic discourse and practice: increased disciplinary specialisation within the context of growing university corporatism, and in the 1990s, downsizing. For inherently generalist fields such as comparative education, these pressures have heightened prospects for their programmatic reduction or even elimination [1]. At the same time, they have encouraged a healthy introspection regarding current purpose and future goals [2]. …

Psychological Factors In The Etiology Of Binge Eating, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore Dec 1994

Psychological Factors In The Etiology Of Binge Eating, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Numerous psychological factors have been hypothesized to play a role in the etiology of binge eating. This chapter proposes that female gender-role socialization puts girls at risk for the development of binge eating. Moreover, it is proposed that an understanding of risk requires an exploration of the developmental tasks of female adolscence. As research of the etiology of binge eating in particular and eating disorders in general begins to move away from testing single-factor causal models and toward testing complex, multifactorial models of causation, research needs to examine the psychological factors discussed in this chapter.

Reconsidering Abortion Law: Liberty, Equality And The New Rhetoric Of Planned Parenthood V. Casey, Erin Daly Dec 1994

Reconsidering Abortion Law: Liberty, Equality And The New Rhetoric Of Planned Parenthood V. Casey, Erin Daly

Erin Daly

Since 1973, the Supreme Court has based the right to abortion on a right to privacy implicit in the Due Process Clauses of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. Despite forceful and increasingly frequent arguments that the harm caused by restrictive abortion laws deny equal protection, at least as much as they impinge on personal privacy, the Court has steadfastly refused to consider abortion in this light. In Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, sowed the seeds for a more nuanced understanding of both liberty and equality. Although the lead opinion is so fractured that, as the maze of concurrences …

The Relationship Between Weight And Psychological Functioning Among Adolescent Girls, Michael A. Friedman, Denise E. Wilfley, Kathleen M. Pike, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Judith Rodin Dec 1994

The Relationship Between Weight And Psychological Functioning Among Adolescent Girls, Michael A. Friedman, Denise E. Wilfley, Kathleen M. Pike, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

This study investigated whether Body Mass Index (BMI) was associated with various aspects of psychological functioning in a sample of largely Caucasian adolescent girls. Three hundred sixty-five adolescent girls ranging from ages 14 through 19 were assessed for general psychological functioning utilizing the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and functioning specific to eating, shape and weight utilizing the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI). Excess weight was associated with higher scores on the Bulimia, Body Dissatisfaction and Drive for Thinness subscales of the EDI. Excess weight was not, however, associated with general psychopathology or any of the subscales of the SCL-90-R. The results suggest …
