If They Tell Their Stories And No One Hears Them, Does It Challenge The Status Quo?: The Role Of Audience, Listening And Dialogue In Storytelling, Jennifer Lucko
Jennifer Lucko
Storytelling is cultural practice long used by African Americans, Latinxs and Native Americans to understand and resist American structures of inequity and oppression. In this paper, I explore the relationship between the social context of storytelling and the construction of Latinx student identities using ethnographic data gathered during 8 months of fieldwork with nine middle school students from Spanish speaking immigrant families in Northern California. This group of students was invited to join an after-school program together with eight students from a private Jewish day school located across the street. Although one aim of the program was to facilitate intercultural …

Reframing Success: Participatory Impacts Of Storytelling In Par Collaborative With Latinx Middle School Students, Jennifer Lucko
Jennifer Lucko
This article examines the participatory impact of a storytelling project on a small group of Latinx English learners in a sixth grade classroom. The storytelling project unexpectedly emerged as a positive ripple effect from a Participatory Action Research (PAR) initiative to foster civic empowerment among middle school students in an English Language Development classroom in Northern California during the 2014–2015 academic year. As the university researcher and classroom teacher worked together on the PAR project, they came to understand the importance of storytelling for this group of students and agreed to create a safe classroom space with appropriate instructional support …

Translanguaging Through Story: Empowering Children To Use Their Full Language Repertoire, Erin E. Flynn, Selena L. Hoy, Jessica L. Lea, Monica A. Garcia
Erin Elizabeth Flynn
Translanguaging through story documents the progression of an emerging bilingual preschooler who draws on his full linguistic repertoire to story his experiences with others. Over the course of the school year, Diego progresses in his ability to tell a complete story in both English and Spanish. Repeated engagement in storytelling provides the support needed for Diego to continue and extend ideas in his stories and in his drawing and play. The case shows how opening the space for children to use their full language repertoire enables a child to reciprocally develop named languages like English and Spanish as he improves …

The Balance Of Public And Private Identities For Lesbian Teachers, Delanna Kay Reed
The Balance Of Public And Private Identities For Lesbian Teachers, Delanna Kay Reed
Delanna Reed
Abstract
Although tolerance and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is growing in the United States, misconceptions and heterosexism still abound. Schools are one of the institutions where traditional gender roles are promoted and homosexuality is often ignored or punished. Too often lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students are bullied by their peers while teachers look the other way. LGBT teachers often fear they will lose their jobs and social standing in the community if they are open about their sexual orientation. This environment provoked me to research lesbian teachers’ perceptions of heteronormativity in their private and …

Becoming The Story In The Joyful World Of "Jack And The Beanstalk"., Kathryn F. Whitmore
Kathryn Whitmore
This article looks into the world of pretend to understand how the invitation to move, to take risks, and to become the story of Jack and the Beanstalk afforded three- to five-year-old children a means to be more than their usual selves. It describes a ten-week process drama residency studied in two preschool settings: first in three classrooms in a rural Head Start school and one year later in two classrooms in an urban Reggio-inspired child development center. The focus is on the compelling effect of engaging preschoolers’ bodies in movement and pretend, particularly for three children who presented what …

Modern stories are the product of a recursive process influenced by elements of genre, outside content, medium, and more. These stories exist in a multitude of forms and are transmitted across multiple media. This article examines how those stories function as pieces of a broader narrative, as well as how that narrative acts as a world for the creation of stories. Through an examination of the polymediated nature of modern narratives, we explore the complicated nature of modern storytelling.

How can training develop the philosophical commitment that library staff members need to successfully lead collaborative projects? How does conversation as a training model and play as an activity shape the collaborative learning process? How do we stimulate libraries and library staff to assume leadership roles in community building? This article is a study of a statewide training process designed to create opportunities for librarians to learn to lead collaborative community projects. It highlights the content, exercises, and methods used to stimulate learning. The workshops were facilitated as models of collaboration, and play, as well as sites of conversation about …

Storytellers: Scandinavian's Art Told Of Restoration, J. Michael Hunter
Storytellers: Scandinavian's Art Told Of Restoration, J. Michael Hunter
J Michael Hunter
Missionary work in Scandinavia began 150 years ago with the arrival of the first LDS missionaries in Denmark on June 14, 1850. In keeping with the observance of the sesquicentennial of the Scandinavian Mission, the Church News presents this article by J. Michael Hunter about two prominent Latter-day Saint artists from earlier days in that part of the world. The art and work of Carl Christian Anton Christensen (1831-1921) from Denmark and Danquart Anton Weggeland (1827-1918) from Norway are discussed, focusing on their use of art to tell stories. Images of their art accompany the article.
Common Storytelling Elements In The Journeys Of Heroes And Villains, Scott T. Allison
Common Storytelling Elements In The Journeys Of Heroes And Villains, Scott T. Allison
Scott T. Allison
In this paper, we review similarities and differences between the classic storytelling arc of heroes and that of villains. We propose some basic differences between the hero's journey and the villain's journey but conclude that the main difference resides in a temporal staggering of the two characters' journeys.

The overarching goal of the current study was to determine the impact of talking interpersonally over time on emerging adults’ individual and relational health. Using an expres- sive writing study design (see Frattaroli, 2006), we assessed the degree to which psychological health improved over time for college students who told and listened to stories about friends’ current difficulties in comparison with tellers in control conditions. We also investigated the effects on tellers’ and listeners’ perceptions of each other’s communication competence, com- municated perspective-taking, and the degree to which each threatened the other’s face during the interaction over time to better …

Tell Us A Story, But Don't Make It A Good One: Resolving The Confusion Regarding Emotional Stories And Federal Rule Of Evidence 403, Cathren Page
Cathren Page
Abstract: Tell Us a Story, But Don’t Make It A Good One: Resolving the Confusion Regarding Emotional Stories and Federal Rule of Evidence 403 by Cathren Koehlert-Page Courts need to reword their opinions regarding Rule 403 to address the tension between the advice to tell an emotionally evocative story at trial and the notion that evidence can be excluded if it is too emotional. In the murder mystery Mystic River, Dave Boyle is kidnapped in the beginning. The audience feels empathy for Dave who as an adult becomes one of the main suspects in the murder of his friend Jimmy’s …

The Persona Doll Project: Promoting Diversity Awareness Among Preservice Teachers Through Storytelling, Mary Ellin Logue, V. Susan Bennett-Armistead, Soojoung Kim
Mary Ellin Logue
The Persona Doll Project describes an experiential intervention with undergraduate preservice teachers designed to increase awareness about diversity and apply this awareness to curriculum planning and advocacy for children. Sixty-three undergraduate students in a social studies methods class were each assigned a persona doll for the semester whose background differed from their own. Each was charged with becoming the advocate for the child, represented by the doll, by telling informed stories that would help other students better understand a level of diversity beyond what they knew from their own lives. Students heightened awareness of their own assumptions through narrative, inquiry …
Storytelling And The Scenario Process: Understanding Success And Failure, Gary Bowman, R. Mackay, Swapnesh Masrani, Peter Mckiernan
Storytelling And The Scenario Process: Understanding Success And Failure, Gary Bowman, R. Mackay, Swapnesh Masrani, Peter Mckiernan
Gary Bowman
Scenario planning has become a widely used strategic management approach for understanding future environmental uncertainty. Despite its increasing popularity in management practice, the theoretical underpinnings for scenario planning processes remain underdeveloped. Furthermore, there is little analysis on why some scenario methods succeed and others fail. To address this gap, we draw on storytelling theory as a conceptual lens for analyzing our data. This paper uses a longitudinal case study of two successive scenario planning interventions over a nine-year period in an intra-organizational partnership to investigate the efficacy of scenario planning development processes. Of the two interventions, the first, which followed …

Storytelling And Violence Against Women, Janette Taylor, J. Banks-Wallace, Toni Tripp-Reimer
Janette Y. Taylor
Health professionals are frequently the first point of contact for many women who are abused and experience intimate male partner violence. Yet, practitioners often do not have the knowledge and/or feel prepared to address these issues with women. The authors propose the use of storytelling and literature as an educational strategy to challenge and change nurses' conceptualization and practices relative to abuse and violence against women.

Narratives Of Family Caregiving: Four Story Types, Lioness Ayres
Narratives Of Family Caregiving: Four Story Types, Lioness Ayres
Lioness Ayres
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: This study used a combination of across-case, thematic analysis and within-case, narrative analysis to develop a typology of stories for family caregivers. Both researchers and clinicians can benefit from interpretive methods that offer access s into the processes and products of making meaning though stories. It is often easier to see the possibilities for reinterpretation from outside a story than from within it. It may be that nurses will also be uniquely able to help clients who are in the process of "getting the story straight" to find new, more sustaining meanings and even to live more happily ever …

Virtual Text And The Growth Of Meaning In Qualitative Analysis, Lioness Ayres, S. Poirier

OBJECTIVE: NA DESIGN: NA SETTING: NA POPULATION: NA INTERVENTIONS: NA MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): NA RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: The virtual text, whose roots extend into the ground of both artistic and aesthetic texts, gives rise to analysis that flourishes in the light of rigorous scrutiny. The virtual text serves to describe the linkage between the research interview and the research report. We construct the virtual text from its artistic origins in the interview transcript and its aesthetic origins in the mind of the researcher. Nurses whose research of practice includes the elicitation, analysis, or transmission of stories may find reader-response theory useful in …
Endings, Secrets, And Silences: Overreading In Narrative Inquiry, S. Poirier, Lioness Ayres
Endings, Secrets, And Silences: Overreading In Narrative Inquiry, S. Poirier, Lioness Ayres
Lioness Ayres
OBJECTIVE: NA DESIGN: NA SETTING: NA POPULATION: NA INTERVENTIONS: NA MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): NA RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Qualitative researchers use memos, audit trails, and research teams to guard against gross misrepresentation or the imposition of bias, but the impossibility of a purely objective recounting of another's story must always be acknowledged. In narrative inquiry the ultimately, unavoidably, subjective nature of interpretation is foregrounded. Interpretation is always qualified. Narrative inquiry entails "overreading", a sensitivity to unspoken or indirect statement, which is central to interpretation. What, though, are the obligations of the overreading researcher, alone at last with a printed transcript whose conflicting or …
The Lady, Or The Tiger? A Field Guide To Metaphor And Narrative, Linda L. Berger
The Lady, Or The Tiger? A Field Guide To Metaphor And Narrative, Linda L. Berger
Linda L. Berger
Metaphor and narrative reassure us that things hang together, providing a sense of coherence to the patterns and paths we employ for perception and expression. In this field guide, I hope to illustrate—with images and stories when possible—how better understanding of metaphor and narrative can guide those engaged in legal rhetoric and persuasion. The article briefly summarizes cognitive theory relating to metaphor and narrative, provides snapshots of their use in the field, in real-life legal persuasion, and suggests ways to adapt metaphor and narrative to a specific example of legal persuasion. In the field guide section, the article uncovers a …

This paper describes the difficulties of being born into an emotionally and intellectually dysfunctional family headed by two child-parents who had neither the skill nor interest nor desire to be thoughtful parents, and who were saddled with all the intellectual and emotional baggage of fundamentalist protestantism that they passed on to their children, forcing the author of the essay to untangle many personal knots of confusion and pain on his path toward autonomy and peace.
