Nonviolence Insights, Brian Martin
Nonviolence Insights, Brian Martin
Brian Martin
‘You’ve been working a long time towards a more nonviolent society. What have you learned? Can you tell me?’ That’s basically what we asked eleven experienced and committed individuals. We wanted to learn some of the insights they had acquired over many years of action and reflection. Our interviews were open-ended. We talked to nonviolent activists, trainers, educators and community-builders. Six were from the Netherlands and five from Australia. Six were men and five were women. Their ages ranged from 20s to 60s. Many are quite well known in nonviolence circles and beyond. We took extensive notes on the interviews, …

'Pitch Black' by Anthony Horton and Youme Landowne is a graphic tale I designed. Published by El Paso's Cinco Puntos Press, 'Pitch Black' was honored by the American Librarian Association as one of 2008's top ten graphic novels for young adults. The book also received a rave Kirkus review on September 15, 2008 noting its design “...and the fluid black-and-white sequential panels tell it well.” Finally, on October 7, 2008, The New York Times did a feature on the book both in print and online in its 'City Room' page: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/07/rules-for-living-in-subway-tunnels/?hp Please be patient when downloading as file is 6.6 …

Background: Latinas experience more depression and are less likely to receive mental health support. Latinas of Mexican origin living in the United States (US) are the focus of this review since almost two-thirds of the US Latina/o population is of Mexican descent.
Objective: This paper synthesizes the research on depression in adult Latinas of Mexican origin residing in the US.
Study Design: The Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline (PubMed), and PsycINFO databases for the years 2000 through 2008 were searched using the keywords Latina, Latino, Hispanic, Mexican-American, Mexican immigrant, women, and depression. The identified articles …

Excerpt From Conspiracy Theories: Secrecy And Power In American Culture (Revised And Updated Edition), Mark Fenster

This is the introduction to the revised and updated edition of Conspiracy Theories: Secrecy and Power in American Culture (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, forthcoming 2008). The book challenges the dominant academic and popular approach to conspiracy theories, which views them as a paranoid, extremist expression of marginal groups and individuals that pathologically challenges the basic assumptions of American history and the pluralistic political system of the United States. The book is premised on the contrary proposition that the prevalence of conspiracy theories is neither necessarily pernicious nor external to American politics and culture but instead an integral aspect of …
