Noel Barengo

Little information is available about the deleterious effect of smoking in older adults The objective of this study was to assess the relationship of smoking habitswith cancer, CVD and all-cause mortality in late middle-age (45–64 years) and older (65–74) people. This cohort study of 6516 men and 6514 women studied the relationship of smoking habits with cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older Finnish men and women during 1997–2013. The study cohort was followed up until the end of 2013 (median follow-up time was 11.8 years). Mortality data were obtained from the National Causes of …

Racial Disparities In Cancer-Related Survival In Patients With Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Esophagus In The Us Between 1973 And 2013, Alice Kim, Peter Ashman, Melissa Ward-Peterson, Juan Manuel Lozano, Noel C. Barengo

Noel Barengo

Background

Esophageal cancer makes up approximately 1% of all diagnosed cancers in the US. There is a persistent disparity in incidence and cancer-related mortality rates among different races for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Most previous studies investigated racial disparities between black and white patients, occasionally examining disparities for Hispanic patients. Studies including Asians/Pacific Islanders (API) as a subgroup are rare. Our objective was to determine whether there is an association between race and cancer-related survival in patients with esophageal SCC.

Methods and findings

This was a retrospective cohort study using the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result …

Background

Glioblastoma is the most common primary brain cancer in adults with an incidence of 3.4 per 100,000, making up about 15% of all brain tumors. Inconsistent results have been published in regard differences in survival between white and black glioblastoma patients. The objective of this to study the association between race and in Glioblastoma patients in the USA during 2010–2014.

Methods and findings

The National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database were used to evaluate race/ethnicity (White non-Hispanic, Black non-Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islanders non-Hispanic (API)) and Hispanic) adults patients with first-time diagnosis of glioblastoma (International Classification of …

Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients are at an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Adequate DM control may reduce in-hospital mortality and cardio-pulmonary complications after an AMI. The objective of this study was to determine whether uncontrolled DM in patients with an incidental AMI was associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality and selected cardio-pulmonary complications. A secondary data analysis of the Puerto Rican Cardiovascular Surveillance System during 2007, 2009, and 2011 was conducted. The study included men and women living in Puerto Rico who were hospitalized due to an incidental AMI and had information on HbA1cmeasurement …

Background: Type II diabetes represents a chronic disease with costly consequences. It is important to identify all risk factors to allow patients the opportunity to counter its progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between marital status and previously undiagnosed abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT) in a northern Colombian population. Methods: Secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional screening study in a northern Colombian adult population ages 18-74 using healthcare insurance company data from 2014-2015. The main exposure was marital status, while the outcome was AGT. A descriptive analysis of the variables in the database was conducted, and …

BACKGROUND:

Although the leading cause of death among Hispanics living in the United States (US) is cardiovascular disease (CVD), the association between Hispanic ethnicity and CVD has been scarcely explored.

OBJECTIVE:

To examine whether being Hispanic is associated with an increased risk of CVD compared with the non-Hispanic US adult population in 2013.

METHODS:

Secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey in 2013 (n=486,905). The main exposure variable was Hispanic ethnicity (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban or Spanish origin) and the main outcome variable was self-reported CVD (myocardial infarction/coronary artery disease/angina). The main covariates were …

Effect Of Charted Mental Illness On Reperfusion Therapy In Hospitalized Patients With An Acute Myocardial Infarction In Florida, Thomas R. Campri, Sharon George, Diego Villacis, Melissa Ward-Peterson, Noel C. Barengo, Juan C. Zevallos

Noel Barengo

Patients with mental illness carry risk factors that predispose them to excess cardiovascular mortality from an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) compared to the general population. The aim of this study was to determine if patients with AMI and charted mental illness (CMI) received less reperfusion therapy following an AMI, compared to AMI patients without CMI in a recent sample population from Florida.

A secondary analysis of data was conducted using the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (FL-AHCA) hospital discharge registry. Adults hospitalized with an AMI from 01/01/2010 to 12/31/2015 were included for the analysis. The dependent variable was administration …
