Computer Architecture For Object Recognition And Sensing, David Brown
Computer Architecture For Object Recognition And Sensing, David Brown
David C. Brown
The notion of using many, most likely different, sensory subsystems in a computer object recognition system immediately provokes several questions: - How will multiple sensors be used in conjunction? - What object qualities are best described by which sensor, and how is sensor utilization optimized? - To what extent does the information provided by each sensor overlap with that provided by others, and how then is this used?

The Prison Sell, David Brown
The Prison Sell, David Brown
David C. Brown
Private prisons are on the agenda, and David Brown is. perturbed. An ideological 'public/private' tussle over prisons is the last thing the prison debate needs. Woken by the phone at 6 am. ABC radio: any comment on the NSW government proposals to invite private tenders to build and run a new jail at Junee in NSW? Blearily rehearse the familiar litany of arguments against private prisons. "Penality sole province of the state...dangers of the development of a penal-industrial complex...potential conflicts of interest... less accountable...cost cutting and undermining of union conditions."

Brown, Farrier, Neal And Weisbrot's Criminal Laws: Materials And Commentary On Criminal Law And Process In New South Wales, David Brown, David Farrier, Sandra Egger, Luke Mcnamara, Alex Steel, Michael Grewcock, Donna Spears
David C. Brown
"The success of Criminal Laws lies both in its distinctive features and in its appeal to a range of readerships. As one review put it, it is simultaneously a "textbook, casebook, handbook and reference work". As such it is ideal for criminal law and criminal justice courses as a teaching text, combining as it does primary sources with extensive critical commentary and a contextual perspective. It is likewise indispensable to practitioners for its detailed coverage of substantive law and its extensive references and inter-disciplinary approach make it a first point of call for researchers from all disciplines. This fifth edition …
Full Isolation Number Of Matrices: Some Extremal Results, David Tate, David Brown
Full Isolation Number Of Matrices: Some Extremal Results, David Tate, David Brown
David C. Brown
A set of nonzero entries of a (0,1)-matrix is an isolated set if no two entries belong to the same row, no two entries belong to the same column, and no two entries belong to a submatrix of the form [1 1; 1 1]. The isolation number of a matrix is the maximum size over all isolated sets. The isolation number of a matrix is a well-known and well-used lower bound for the matrix's Boolean rank. We will discuss the isolation number of the adjacency matrix of various graphs and develop some extremal results for n x n matrices with …

The Adoption Of Erp Applications In China, Lishan He, David Brown
The Adoption Of Erp Applications In China, Lishan He, David Brown
David C. Brown
The adoption of enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications started in the early 1990s in the US and Europe. Although many researchers have studied the critical success factors (CSFs) or developed implementation framework to guide the deployment of the complex IT projects, there have been many failed implementations. The implementation of ERP systems in China began in the late 1990s but has resulted in a disappointing success rate of about 10 percent. This paper will investigate which issues facilitate or hinder the adoption of ERP applications in China in the light of previous research reported on Western firms. The research methodology …

Influence Of Env And Long Terminal Repeat Sequences On The Tissue Tropism Of Avian Leukosis Viruses, David Brown, Harriet Robinson
Influence Of Env And Long Terminal Repeat Sequences On The Tissue Tropism Of Avian Leukosis Viruses, David Brown, Harriet Robinson
David C. Brown
Adsorption and penetration of retroviruses into eucaryotic cells is mediated by retroviral envelope glycoproteins interacting with host receptors. Recombinant avian leukosis viruses (ALVs) differing only in envelope determinants that interact with host receptors for subgroup A or E ALVs have been found to have unexpectedly distinctive patterns of tissue-specific replication. Recombinants of both subgroups were highly expressed in bursal lymphocytes as well as in cultured chicken embryo fibroblasts. In contrast, the subgroup A but not subgroup E host range allowed high levels of expression in skeletal muscle, while subgroup E but not subgroup A envelope glycoproteins permitted efficient replication in …
Eclusters And The Role Of Intermediaries In Enabling Digital Enterprise Communities Of Smes, Nigel Lockett, David Brown
Eclusters And The Role Of Intermediaries In Enabling Digital Enterprise Communities Of Smes, Nigel Lockett, David Brown
David C. Brown
The potential for the emergence of digital enterprise communities enabled by one or more intermediaries, termed eClusters, has been predicted from empirical research in business communities of SMEs in the UK. The role of intermediaries, which will be pivotal to the formation of eClusters, is examined in this paper and forms part of a wider research project into the nature of digital enterprise communities. One conceptualisation of the role of intermediaries is the provision of a Trust Platform. As with IT outsourcing generally it is large companies that have been early adopter of application service providers (ASPs) services with little …

Grey Gold: Do Older In-Migrants Benefit Rural Communities?, Nina Glasgow, David Brown
David C. Brown
Older Americans retiring to rural areas quickly integrate in their new communities and bring significant social and intellectual capital to those communities, finds a new issue brief from the Carsey Institute. The brief is among the few studies to consider social rather than economic impacts of older in-migration to rural areas.
The Composing Process: A Springboard For Literacy Development, David Brown, L.D. Briggs
The Composing Process: A Springboard For Literacy Development, David Brown, L.D. Briggs
David C. Brown
The composing process involves the methods used by writers to discover ideas, formulate goals, make plans, ex press ideas, and assess, revise, and edit their writing. Several years ago, few studies examining the children's composing process could be found in the literature. Yet recently, there has been an increased interest in all facets of composing. This interest has resulted from a concern for improving reading and writing skills, and has been the impetus for increased research activity. As a result of this research activity, models describing the composing process have been developed, and new issues are continuing to gain attention. …

Delegation Of Trade Authority To The President Under Unified And Divided Government: The Institutional Significance, David Brown
Delegation Of Trade Authority To The President Under Unified And Divided Government: The Institutional Significance, David Brown
David C. Brown
This study examines the effect that divided or unified government, in the United States of America, has on the delegation of trade authority to the President. Using a qualitative analysis approach, I examine competing views and formulate an independent opinion based on the peoples’ preferences and evaluation of the principles of America’s Constitutionalism. I conclude that overemphasis on the impact of divided government is misleading because trade issues provide the primary mechanism which determines the implementation of America’s trade policies, and the principles of Constitutionalism are valuable guidelines. Blended with the discussion is the awareness of an American ethos which …

The National Association of Physicians for the Environment (NAPE) has assumed a leadership role in protecting environmental health in recent years. The Committee of Biomedical Research Leaders was convened at the recent NAPE Leadership Conference: Biomedical Research and the Environment held on 1–2 November 1999, at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. This report summarizes the discussion of the committee and its recommendations. The charge to the committee was to raise and address issues that will promote and sustain environmental health, safety, and energy efficiency within the biomedical community. Leaders from every important research sector (industry laboratories, academic health …
A Manual Physical Therapy Approach Versus Subacromial Corticosteroid Injection For Treatment Of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: A Protocol For A Randomised Clinical Trial, Daniel Rhon, Robert E. Boyles, Joshua Cleland, David Brown
A Manual Physical Therapy Approach Versus Subacromial Corticosteroid Injection For Treatment Of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: A Protocol For A Randomised Clinical Trial, Daniel Rhon, Robert E. Boyles, Joshua Cleland, David Brown
David C. Brown
Introduction: Corticosteroid injections (CSI) are a recommended and often-used first-line intervention for shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) in primary care and orthopaedic settings. Manual physical therapy (MPT) offers a non-invasive approach with negligible risk for managing SIS. There is limited evidence to suggest significant long-term improvements in pain, strength and disability with the use of MPT, and there are conflicting reports from systematic reviews that question the long-term efficacy of CSI. Specifically, the primary objective is to compare the effect of CSI and MPT on pain and disability in subjects with SIS at 12 months. Design: This pragmatic randomised clinical trial …
The Effect Of All-Trans Retinoic Acid And Fatty Acids On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Progression, David Brown
The Effect Of All-Trans Retinoic Acid And Fatty Acids On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Progression, David Brown
David C. Brown
Vitamin A metabolites and retinoids may slow the progression of breast cancer and elicit anti-neoplastic properties similar to those of omega-3 fatty acids. Studies using animal models show a decrease in the incidence, growth and metastisis of mammary tumors in the presence of specific fatty acids. This effect is also seen with use of retinoids, specifically all-trans retinoic acid (AtRA). Thus, fatty acids may also alter retinoid homeostasis in mammary carcinoma cells (MCF-7s). The potential for inter/co dependency among fatty acids and retinoids is considerable, and here it has been hypothesized that a decrease in cancer progression will occur in …

Lower Extremity Passive Range Of Motion In Community-Ambulating Stroke Survivors, Sheila Schindler-Ivens, Davalyn Desimone, Sarah Grubich, Carolyn Kelley, Namita Sanghvi, David Brown
David C. Brown
Background: Physical therapists may prescribe stretching exercises for individuals with stroke to improve joint integrity and to reduce the risk of secondary musculoskeletal impairment. While deficits in passive range of motion (PROM) exist in stroke survivors with severe hemiparesis and spasticity, the extent to which impaired lower extremity PROM occurs in community-ambulating stroke survivors remains unclear. This study compared lower extremity PROM in able-bodied individuals and independent community-ambulatory stroke survivors with residual stroke-related neuromuscular impairments. Our hypothesis was that the stroke group would show decreased lower extremity PROM in the paretic but not the nonparetic side and that decreased PROM …

Infection Of Peripancreatic Lymph Nodes But Not Islets Precedes Kilham Rat Virus-Induced Diabetes In Bb/Wor Rats, David Brown, Raymond Welsh, Arthur Like
David C. Brown
A parvovirus serologically identified as Kilham rat virus (KRV) reproducibly induces acute type I diabetes in diabetes-resistant BB/Wor rats. The tissue tropism of KRV was investigated by in situ hybridization with a digoxigenin-labelled plasmid DNA probe containing approximately 1.6 kb of the genome of the UMass isolate of KRV. Partial sequencing of the KRV probe revealed high levels of homology to the sequence of minute virus of mice (89%) and to the sequence of H1 (99%), a parvovirus capable of infecting rats and humans. Of the 444 bases sequenced, 440 were shared by H1. KRV mRNA and DNA were readily …

Orders: Interval, Interval-Probe, And Interval-K, David Brown
David C. Brown
If an interval graph is such that its complement can be oriented transitively, that orientation yields an interval order. A graph G is an interval-probe graph if its vertices can be partitioned into P (probes) and N (nonprobes) and each vertex v can correspond to an interval Iv so that vertices u and v are adjacent if and only if Iu ∩Iv ̸= Ø and {u,v}∩P ̸= Ø. A graph G is an interval k-graph if its vertices can be properly colored and each vertex v can correspond to an interval Iv so that vertices u and v are adjacent …
Organised Crime: Changing Practices, Markets And Relations, David Brown
Organised Crime: Changing Practices, Markets And Relations, David Brown
David C. Brown
David Brown enters into the complex debate on "organised crime" and "corruption". He discusses the question of definition; analyses the various pre-conditions of organised crime networks; looks at the role of the media in constructing news; points out the dangers associated with the tendency in the current debate to reduce everything that happens to an effect of corruption; and finally stresses the need to change practices and relations rather than merely expose individuals.
