History

In 1868, as the Meiji period (1868-1912) began, Japan's countryside was largely untouched by the technologies then rapidly developing in the West. In little more than a century, Japan has become an archetypal high-technology society and economy. The course of Japan's technological development was, of course, radically affected by World War II and its aftermath, but its basic contours were already evident before the war. By then, the defining characteristics of a technologically advanced society and economy were underway. Shifts in terminology may be harbingers of a revolutionary new paradigm or a repackaging of older dilemmas. Recently some terminological rearrangements have emerged with sufficient consistency in studies of Chinese religion and culture to warrant examination of their implicit assumptions and practical ramifications. In brief, the trend in the study of Chinese religion, and in the history of religions generally, has been to talk of "popular religion," "local religion," or, most recently, "popular religious cultures" instead of "folk" and "elite" religions or "great" and "little" traditions.' Kant combined two traditional approaches in his political theory, reference to a utopian and ideal universal moral order in common with Plato, Thomas More, and Jean Jacques Rousseau and an analysis of the pursuit of individual self-interest leading to the establishment of laws that enable citizens to satisfy their interests, like Thomas Hobbes, Niccolò Machiavelli, and Adam Smith. Kant focused on the international level, arguing that following the categorical imperative would arrange a society equitably while national commercial self-interest would lead to a league of nations to adjudicate international disputes. Quest For The Religious Freud: Faith, Morality, And Gender In Psychoanalysis, Diane Jonte-Pace

The recent scholarship on Freud is guilty of the same kind of ideological projection as that uncovered by Albert Schweitzer in his 1906 exposé of the assumptions underlying the "historical Jesus" scholarship: the search for the religious Freud evinces a search for an atheist, Christian, or Jew who mirrors the personal and intellectual assumptions of the seeker. Ironically, of the three issues emerging as central concerns in recent literature on Freud-Jewishness, ethics, and gender-Jewishness and ethics were also the focus of heated debate among nineteenth-century Biblical scholars.

Liturgical reform has not been well received by some cultural anthropologists and sociologists of religion. Most, of course, have ignored this quiet revolution and its ramifications, but a few have reacted strongly. In this very journal, for example, the justly renowned anthropologist Victor Turner lamented the loss of the dignified pre-Conciliar Mass and the emergence of "relevant" liturgical experimentation.¹ Turner's reaction is not an isolated case among scholars, although it may be the most direct.² Such opinions clearly suggest the dangers of forsaking scholarly distance or appealing to a professional "expertise" to decide what is proper ritual and …

Library Collection Deterioration: A Study At The University Of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign, Tina E. Chrzastowski, David Cobb, Nancy Davis, Jean Geil, Betsy Kruger

Staff publications, research, and presentations

A survey of bound items in the bookstacks of the University of Illinois library at Urbana-Champaign was conducted following the methodology used in the 1979 survey of the Green Library stacks at Stanford University. A reliable random sampling technique was used. The survey found that 37.0% of the items at Illinois are seriously deteriorated (paper is embrittled), 33.6% are moderately deteriorated (paper is becoming brittle), and 29.4% are in good condition (paper shows no signs of deterioration). The total cost of the survey was $1,845.45 (excluding permanent staff salaries). The methodology can be adapted by other libraries for collection condition …

Thousands of businesses in the United States have implemented programs to promote physical fitness among their employees (Falkenberg, 1987). The programs range from company-paid memberships at private health and fitness clubs to complete work site fitness facilities. These programs have been developed not only to improve and maintain employee health but also to promote psychological well-being and productivity and to reduce absenteeism, insurance claims, and stress. Recent research focusing on the use of employee fitness programs to improve work-related behaviors suggests that these programs may improve absenteeism, job satisfaction, tenure. and health care costs, especially among female employees (Baun, Bernacki, …
