Rude And Crude?: When Teens In Your Library Respond Negatively To You, Think Back To How You Approached Them, Anthony Bernier, D. T. Herald Aug 1997

Rude And Crude?: When Teens In Your Library Respond Negatively To You, Think Back To How You Approached Them, Anthony Bernier, D. T. Herald

Anthony Bernier

Skaters, taggers, gang members, and other groups of young people are being identified all over America as problems for libraries. However, these teens respond negatively to librarians because of the way that they are approached and because they experience so much discrimination. If teen behavior needs to be changed, there needs to be a change in the way they are approached and an appeal toward their code of ethics.

Singular And Plural Non-Deterministic Parameters, Sigurd Meldal, M. A. Walicki Aug 1997

Singular And Plural Non-Deterministic Parameters, Sigurd Meldal, M. A. Walicki

Sigurd Meldal

The article defines algebraic semantics of singular (call-time-choice) and plural (run-time-choice) nondeterministic parameter passing and presents a specification language in which operations with both kinds of parameters can be defined simultaneously. Sound and complete calculi for both semantics are introduced. We study the relations between the two semantics and point out that axioms for operations with plural arguments may be considered as axiom schemata for operations with singular arguments.

An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl Jul 1997

An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl

Eugene C. Cordero

An analysis of over 4 years of Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) measurements of CH4, HF, O3, and zonal wind are used to study the influence of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on constituent transport in the tropics. At the equator, spectral analysis of the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations reveals QBO signals in constituent and temperature fields at altitudes between 20 and 45 km. Between these altitudes, the location of the maximum QBO amplitude roughly corresponds with the location of the largest vertical gradient in the constituent field. Thus, at 40 …

Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass Jan 1997

Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass

Paul Douglass

The writer examines an aesthetics of empire evident in Eliot's The Waste Land. He contends that though this work's formal innovations appear “revolutionary,” its aesthetics fit into modernism's reactionary character and reflect the cultural politics of the British conservatism that Eliot had adopted. In decoding the poem's fragments and allusions, he illustrates Eliot's preoccupation with empire. He also shows how The Waste Land may be seen as part of a British literary tradition of “reading the wreckage” that goes back at least to Edward Volney's Ruins (1791).

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek Jan 1997

Structural And Dynamical Uncertainties In Modelling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies, Aaron J. Romanowsky, C. S. Kochanek

Aaron J. Romanowsky

Quantitative dynamical models of galaxies require deprojection of the observed surface brightness to determine the luminosity density of the galaxy. Existing deprojection methods for axisymmetric galaxies assume that a unique deprojection exists for any given inclination, even though the projected density is known to be degenerate to the addition of ‘konus densities’ that are invisible in projection. We develop a deprojection method based on linear regularization that can explore the range of luminosity densities that are statistically consistent with an observed surface brightness distribution. The luminosity density is poorly constrained at modest inclinations (i ≿ 30°), even in the limit …

Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy Jan 1997

Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy

Alejandro Garcia

The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to solve the three-dimensional nano-scale gas film lubrication problem between a gas bearing slider and a rotating disk, and this solution is compared to the numerical solution of the compressible Reynolds equations with the slip flow correction based on the linearized Boltzmann equation as presented by Fukui and Kaneko [molecular gas film lubrication (MGL) method] [ASME J. Tribol. 110, 253 (1988)]. In the DSMC method, hundreds of thousands of simulated particles are used and their three velocity components and three spatial coordinates are calculated and recorded by using a hard-sphere collision …

Analytical Models For Vehicle/Gap Distribution On Automated Highway Systems, Jacob Tsao, Randolph W. Hall, Indrajit Chatterjee Jan 1997

Analytical Models For Vehicle/Gap Distribution On Automated Highway Systems, Jacob Tsao, Randolph W. Hall, Indrajit Chatterjee

H.-S. Jacob Tsao

Highway congestion has in recent years become a pervasive problem for urban and suburban areas alike. The concept of Automated Highway Systems is based on the belief that integration of sensing, communication, and control technologies into vehicles and highways can lead to a large improvement in capacity and safety without requiring a significant amount of additional highway right-of-way. A fundamental determinant of Automated Highway Systems capacity is the vehicle-following rule, the rule that governs the behavior of vehicles traveling along a common lane (e.g., the spacing between any two longitudinally adjacent vehicles). Vehicle following affects the longitudinal capacity (achievable flow …

Rna Base-Amino Acid Interaction Strengths Derived From Structures And Sequences, Brooke Lustig, S Arora, R L. Jernigan Jan 1997

Rna Base-Amino Acid Interaction Strengths Derived From Structures And Sequences, Brooke Lustig, S Arora, R L. Jernigan

Brooke S. Lustig

We investigate RNA base-amino acid interactions by counting their contacts in structures and their implicit contacts in various functional sequences where the structures can be assumed to be preserved. These frequencies are cast into equations to extract relative interaction energetics. Previously we used this approach in considering the major groove interactions of DNA, and here we apply it to the more diverse interactions observed in RNA. Structures considered are the three different tRNA synthetase complexes, the U1A spliceosomal protein with an RNA hairpin and the BIV TARTat complex. We use binding data for the base frequencies for the seryl, aspartyl …

Complexes Between Nascent Polypeptides And Their Molecular Chaperones In The Cytosol Of Mammalian Cells, Daryl K. Eggers, W. J. Welch, W. J. Hansen Jan 1997

Complexes Between Nascent Polypeptides And Their Molecular Chaperones In The Cytosol Of Mammalian Cells, Daryl K. Eggers, W. J. Welch, W. J. Hansen

Daryl K. Eggers

Folding of newly synthesized proteins in vivo is believed to be facilitated by the cooperative interaction of a defined group of proteins known as molecular chaperones. We investigated the direct interaction of chaperones with nascent polypeptides in the cytosol of mammalian cells by multiple methods. A new approach using a polyclonal antibody to puromycin allowed us to tag and capture a population of truncated nascent polypeptides with no bias as to the identity of the bound chaperones. In addition, antibodies that recognize the cytosolic chaperones hsp70, CCT (TRiC), hsp40, p48 (Hip), and hsp90 were compared on the basis of their …

The Nuts & Bolts Of Cooperative Learning In Engineering, Nikos J. Mourtos Jan 1997

The Nuts & Bolts Of Cooperative Learning In Engineering, Nikos J. Mourtos

Nikos J. Mourtos

A great number of engineering students work alone most of the time. This is in sharp contrast with industry where most of the work is performed in teams. The ability to work in a team effectively is not acquired automatically. It takes interpersonal and social skills which need to be developed and practiced. In addition, research shows that the student-student interaction, often neglected in traditional ways of teaching, is a most effective way of learning. Thus, it is imperative that we encourage our students to work with each other in their efforts to achieve their educational goals. In this paper …

Language Teaching In India: Issues And Innovations, B Kumaravadivelu Jan 1997

Language Teaching In India: Issues And Innovations, B Kumaravadivelu

B. Kumaravadivelu

This collected volume on English language teaching (ELT) in India contains 22 articles written by Indian teachers and researchers. The book has been divided into six sections. The first section—“Problematizing ELT in India”—offers a critical, historical perspective along with innovative ideas for making English language learning and teaching meaningful and purposive in modern India. The second section—“Nature of ELT Materials”—demonstrates how the ELT materials used in Indian classrooms are not embedded in local needs and indigenous contexts. The section emphasizes the importance of developing instructional materials that not only make use of the rich linguistic and cultural resources available in …
