Social Identity Salience & Threat: Validating The Sitc Inventory, Christina Poirier, Katherine Dempsey
Social Identity Salience & Threat: Validating The Sitc Inventory, Christina Poirier, Katherine Dempsey
Academic Festival
Social identity threat refers to the fear that stigmatized groups often face about being mistreated, invalidated, or devalued for their social identification. All individuals have multiple intersecting social identities that influence how people are treated and perform. Complex discriminatory experiences of advantage and disadvantage often arise and persist. Past social identity threat measures have examined identity as singular rather than multifaceted, which fails to recognize intersectionality. We introduce the Social Identity Threat Concerns (SITC) Inventory–a novel tool for measuring social identity threat concerns that allows for an exploration of threats related to both singular social identities and their complex intersections. …

Comedy's Power To Transcend Controversy In Some Like It Hot, Jessica Balogh
Academic Festival
The film made in 1959, "Some Like It Hot," focused on two jazz musicians Joe and Jerry who after a confrontation with the mob, escape by masquerading as women in an all-female band. The film as a whole, with an emphasis on men masquerading as women, was deemed controversial but through the power of farce, comedy outweighed its more negative perception making it the iconic movie that it is still today.

Effects Of Four-Week Vertical Jump Training Program To Increase Lower Body Power In Women Collegiate Rowers, Andrew Dekovics
Effects Of Four-Week Vertical Jump Training Program To Increase Lower Body Power In Women Collegiate Rowers, Andrew Dekovics
Academic Festival
Rowing is a sport that requires the use of the entirety of the body for each stroke, with a large portion of the movement coming from the lower body. Because each stroke occurs rapidly, lower body power is essential to achieve high performance. This exercise program was written up with the intention of increasing the lower body power of the Sacred Heart University women’s rowing team. Vertical jumps are a common activity to assess lower body power, so an increase in vertical jump height would mean an increase in lower body power. Through the use ofplyometrics and other lower body …
The Influence Of Region Of Residence On Diagnosis Of Breast Cancer, Jessica Catterson, Mollie Mcmanus, Erin Tumbrello
The Influence Of Region Of Residence On Diagnosis Of Breast Cancer, Jessica Catterson, Mollie Mcmanus, Erin Tumbrello
Academic Festival
Breast cancer is a common disease among women in the United States, and there are observable disparities in outcomes after a diagnosis. Factors such as region of residence are known to impact access to resources which may cause a variation in health outcomes after a breast cancer diagnosis. If disparities in breast cancer diagnosis can be identified, resources can be provided to lessen the gap, giving each woman an equal chance of receiving preventative care, a timely diagnosis, and quality treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify if an association exists between region of residence and diagnosis of …
How Poverty Affects Depression In Adults 25-65, Jillian Spindel, Stephanie Capito, Claudia Uva
How Poverty Affects Depression In Adults 25-65, Jillian Spindel, Stephanie Capito, Claudia Uva
Academic Festival
In this research we explore socioeconomic status and how it is related to depression rates. This is an important topic to study because economic status determines an individual's standing in life. Furthermore, as the transfer from childhood to adulthood occurs, finding a stable job that will support the individual becomes extremely important and without it moving into adulthood becomes much more difficult. This is an issue that impacts millions of Americans as 37.2 million people live in poverty (Bureau, U.C, 2021). The number of people living in poverty increased 11.4 percent from 2015 to 2020. Adults living in poverty are …

Childhood obesity is a major healthcare concern, as millions of children are classified as overweight and obese. Socioeconomic status (SES) influences the prevalence of childhood obesity, especially individuals from low SES. A child's living environment, attending low income schools, parental education, and low family income all impact a child's risk of becoming obese. The National Survey of Children's Health 2021 data was used to observe the relationship between Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and identification of being overweight by a doctor. Family poverty level is significantly associated with obesity among children aged 5-12. This hypothesis was tested used cross-tabulation with chi-square …

This poster defines social justice in healthcare, addressing access and equity from local, national, and global perspectives. It explores solutions from local, national, and global perspectives as well, acknowledging biases surrounding the subject. Exploring it from these three perspectives raises awareness of the ways in which diverse populations have been affected, resulting in disparities in healthcare, ultimately leading to extensive gaps in education and resources. This project looks at the greater Bridgeport community, the overall United States, and healthcare accessibility worldwide. It discusses barriers faced by those that are poor and marginalized, and solutions that have potential to create great …

What Was The Worst Part Of Your Day? Refining A Coding System To Examine Daily Experiences Of Minority Stress, Gabrielle H. Lasiw, Chelsea G. Signore, Nicole J. Sperling, Sadie Stevens

Minority stressors are unique experiences that are specific to marginalized groups, such as sexual minorities (e.g., LGB people). Past research has supported the connection between minority stress and negative physical and mental health; however, little is known about how minority stress is experienced in everyday life. For instance, most research studies include questionnaires that limit examples of minority stress. Similarly, little is known about which stressors are most frequent, and who they affect most (i.e., age, gender, sexual orientation). To address this gap, we are analyzing open-ended responses from a daily diary study in which 112 sexual minorities self-reported stressful …

Calling-In Vs. Calling-Out: Style Preferences For Confronting Prejudice, Michele Chu, Nick Granja, Casey Russell
Academic Festival
Confronting prejudice—directly challenging biased comments and behaviors—is an effective strategy for reducing prejudiced attitudes and instances of stereotyping. However, it remains unclear how people feel about different confrontation styles and which tactics are most comfortable and preferred. In this study, we compared two confrontation styles: “calling-out,” which aims to shame and/or correct the offender, and “calling-in,” which aims to understand and educate the offender. We recruited 400 SHU students (75.5% White, 82.3% women). Participants were randomly assigned to read one of six scenarios (covering ableism, sexism, ethnic bias, ageism, racism/classism, or homophobia), imagining a friend making a biased comment that …

Our research team is interested in exploring how the disclosure of pronouns in job applications affects perceptions of skill and competitiveness for a job position. In other words, if people disclose their pronouns are they viewed as being more deserving for the job? Further, do these attitudes depend on their gender identity? Our study will have participants read a fictional job description and application and rate how qualified the fictional applicant is. We will manipulate the applicant's gender identity (e.g., woman, man, transgender woman, transgender man, non- binary) and whether this applicant includes their pronouns (e.g., she/her, he/him, they/them) or …

Coping During COVID-19 - Comparative Analysis Between Refugee and Non-refugee Older Adults
As the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic are still being discussed, the implications of COVID-19 among aging populations must be documented, especially underrepresented aging adults such as refugees. The overall well-being of older adults may have been impacted due to the novelty of challenges posed by the pandemic. As such, the present study examines the implications of COVID-19 among older refugee and non-refugee populations in the U.S. Interviews were conducted among older adults aged 55-69 (m=66.3), living in the Northeast of the U.S. A total of 81 interviews …
