Boat Building, Navigation, And West African Indigenous Knowledge, Will Connell Oct 2001

Boat Building, Navigation, And West African Indigenous Knowledge, Will Connell

African Diaspora ISPs

This paper focuses on the boat building and navigation practices that are currently involved in constructing and navigating both the semi-industrial and artisanal canoe vessels along Ghana's coastline. In order to make a fisherman's journey to sea physically possible, productive, and safe, there are many processes that must take place. Boat construction and navigation are two of the most important of these processes and it is in these two areas that the most changes have taken place since the first fisherman went to sea. By examining these activities in detail, and by comparing my findings with regard to the differences …

Breaking The Chains Of Slavery: How To Continue Healing From A History Of Oppression, Jennifer Parrish

African Diaspora ISPs

Through studying Ghana's history of oppression and the steps that have been taken to heal from this oppression, my objective was to identify each part of her oppressive past: physica, political, and economical, and through what I had learned in the multiple formal and informal interviews and observations about this oppressive past can continue. I learned through my research that healing is currently happening in Ghana. However, I concluded that only through proper education and financial as well as psychological reparation can complete healing occur. This process will pave the way for Ghana to finally achieve ture freedom on all levels.

Child Labor In Ghana: An Analysis Of Perceptions And Practices, Amanda Bruscino Apr 2001

Child Labor In Ghana: An Analysis Of Perceptions And Practices, Amanda Bruscino

African Diaspora ISPs

After talking to children, parents, people in organizations as well as in government, I have gathered many different views on what I will temporarily, for lack of a better phrase, label as child labour. Parents frustrated me with their inability to see that the work their kids were doing was too much, and saddened me with their acknowledgement that they don't want to make them work, but they have to. Government and organisational official made me admire them for their genuine dedication to the idea of change, but made me skeptical with their inconsistent ability to actually effect that change. …

Sankofa: A Study Into The Teaching Of History In The Ghanian Education System: A Case Study In Cape Coast Schools, Kyla Saphir

African Diaspora ISPs

I wanted to investigate how history is taught in the Ghanaian education systems at various levels and specifically in Cape Coast schools. I believe that history teaches people who they are and where they come from and thus equips them to learn from their past and prosper due to the analysis of the accomplishments and faults of their ancestors. I was curious to see how and what Ghanaians are taught about their past since their Western style education system has been structured after the British education system. I also wanted to find out how much is taught about the African …

The Effects Of Structural Adjustment On The Lives Of Small-Scale Farmers A Micro Study Of The Cape Coast District, Central Region, Ghana, Hannah Clark

African Diaspora ISPs

his paper seeks to determine the effects of structural adjustment policies on a group of small-scale farmers in the Cape Coast District of the Central Region of Ghana. The paper seeks answers to three questions: Has the small farmer's ability to produce improved since adjustment began? And has the small farmer's quality of life improved since adjustment began? And how have policies affected cocoa farmers differently from non-cocoa farmers? The paper concludes that many factors hamper farmers' ability to produce, and some are related to adjustment, while some are not. Quality of life proved difficult to determine, but it seems …

World Learning is truly a one-of-a-kind institution. This becomes clear as one learns more about its activities and the …
