Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton Jan 2002

Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton

Theses

The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model was developed to create synthetic images of remotely sensed scenes (Schott et al. 1999). It is a quantitative model based on first principles that calculates the radiance reaching the sensor from the visible region of the spectrum through to the long-wave. DIRSIG generates a very accurate representation of what a sensor would see by modeling all processes involved in the imaging chain. Currently, DIRSIG only models light from passive sources such as the sun, blackbody radiation due to the temperature of an object, and local incoherent illuminants. Active systems allow …

Derivation Of The Required Elements For A Definition Of The Term Middleware, Maya Mathew Jan 2002

Derivation Of The Required Elements For A Definition Of The Term Middleware, Maya Mathew

Theses

Thirteen contemporary definitions of Middleware were analyzed. The definitions agree that any software that can do the following should be classified as Middleware (1) provide service that provides transparent application-to-application interaction across the network, (2) act as a service provider for distributed applications, and (3) provide services that are primarily used by distributed applications (e.g., RPCs, ORBs, Directories, name-resolution services, etc.) Most definitions agree that Middleware is that level of software required to achieve platform, location, and network transparency. There is some discrepancy about the OSI levels at which middleware operates. The majority of definitions limit it to levels 5, …

Experimental Evaluation Of Impulse Turbine Designs For Chain Testing Systems, Aaron Donlon Jan 2002

Experimental Evaluation Of Impulse Turbine Designs For Chain Testing Systems, Aaron Donlon

Theses

There are several ways to test automotive timing chains for wear in a laboratory environment. One novel method proposed by Borg-Warner Morse TEC uses fluid jets striking an impeller blade. The momentum of the oil striking and deflected by the impeller blade is used to produce a torque. This torque is transmitted to the system through the timing chain. A previous theoretical design study (conducted elsewhere) evaluated some of the design factors as they related to machine performance and ultimately to the torque loads applied to the chain. From this theoretical study came the design for two novel bucket and …

Evaluation Of The Change On Water Vapor Transmission Rate Of Different Polypropylene Films In Contact With D-Limoneme And The Effect Such Changes Have On The Shelf Life Of Confectionary Products., Anna Romero

Theses

This paper discusses the changes observed in Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) of three plastic films while exposed to different concentrations of d-limoneme. The concentration of d-limoneme on the films was determined by means of Headspace Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. The Water Vapor Transmission rate of all films was determined by means of a MOCON-Water Vapor Permeation Analysis System Permatran-W 3/31. It was observed that d-limoneme affected the films in two ways: at lower concentrations, the WVTR decreased but, after certain concentration was reached, the WVTR increased. These results explain the shortened shelf-life of candies containing d-limoneme which are …

Modeling And Fabrication Of Optically Resonant Periodic Structures, Charles Faisst Jr. Jan 2002

Modeling And Fabrication Of Optically Resonant Periodic Structures, Charles Faisst Jr.

Theses

Optically resonant periodic electrode (ORPEL) structures developed for use as an optical modulator at telecommunication wavelengths using standard microelectronic processes have been successfully fabricated. These structures combine passive optical components (i.e. waveguides, diffraction gratings) with optical and/or electrical excitation, which alters the optical properties of the device. Although the electro-optical effect in silicon is weak in comparison to HI-V materials, a change in the free carrier concentration will cause a change in the effective index of refraction, and can alter the resonance wavelength. Optical test results have demonstrated resonance near 1550 nm on devices with grating pitches ranging from 0.68 …
