This thesis examines the creative process involved in the creation of a work of art; in this case, a painting. First, the artist creates a visual language, which becomes his instrument of communication. Then in the studio, the practical process activates visual representation of the language, communicated in brushstrokes. The visual image created through this process stimulates the artist emotionally, while imparting a sense of satisfaction to the viewer who understands that he has been brought into the aesthetic world created by the artist.

In an effort to combat the rising cost of health care in the United States by encouraging preventative and self-care, the federal government passed the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act of 1994. This act essentially deregulated the natural product market allowing herbs, including yohimbine, to be sold over the counter without undergoing the same strict evaluation as a traditional synthetic drug candidate. A process for the fabrication of binary optics at the Rochester Institute of Technology was established and tested. A sacrificial aluminum layer was used to provide both a conductive substrate for electron beam exposure, and a clean highly resistant etch stop for reactive ion etching. This enabled the use of a low pressure CF4 RE process that minimized the rates of polymerization during etch and provided stable etch rates necessary to achieve 100 angstrom etch depth control. Alignment errors of up to 1 micron were attributed to stage drifts on the electron beam exposure system. No systematic errors were found …

Threonine dehydrogenase from E.coli is a member of the medium-chain, Zn2+-containing alcohol dehydrogenase family. A site-directed mutant of theronine dehydrogenase was prepared at position 88 by replacing the native glutamate with cysteine using polymerase chain reaction. The mutated enzyme, designated TDH E88C, was expressed and purified to homogeneity in a three-step chromatographic procedure. The activity of the mutant after each step of purification was determined by a specific assay. Both the total activity and the specific activity of TDH E99C were significantly decreased compared to the wild-type TDH. The mutant enzyme was not sufficiently stable to obtain reliable Vmax or …

This thesis was a pragmatic exploration into die patination process of copper. Two particular process elements were researched; patina layering and manipulation of the environment in which patination occurs. The success of the process will be determined by the permanence, consistency, durability and aesthetic worth of the resulting patina. The primary process element, that of patina layering, was comprised of a hot immersion process followed by compatibility tests with a subsequent exposure to fumed, sprayed, and saturated suspension processes. One of the least desirable schemes for a linear electro-hydraulic motion control actuator is having a low backup structure stiffness coupled with a high flow gain of the spool valve. It has been demonstrated that this condition causes instability in the form of high frequency oscillations. This thesis examines how actuator parameters can be varied to add stability when a low backup structure stiffness and high flow gain are mandatory design criteria. The thesis project consists of an interactive multimedia computer software program, designed to help teach a course title, college-level semester course in soil and water management (Soil and Water Management, offered at Cornell University, Department of Soil, Crop, and Atmospheric Sciences course number 321, 4 credithours). The software was authored in Macromedia Director 6.5. Original artwork includes computer graphics some of which are sequenced to create animations that illustrate key concepts of the subject material. The processing speed of modern microchips and the density of components at the card level has been increasing at a steady rate. With these increases, come an increase in heat generation and a need to dissipate very high heat fluxes. Heat sinks that employ very narrow channels, on the order of 58 - 600um wide have been shown to dissipate heat fluxes as high as 10,000 kW/m2 (Tuckerman, 1984) while maintaining chip temperatures below 130 C. In this thesis, a paradigm was generated for color gamut mapping of pictorial images. This involved the development and testing of: 1.) a hue-corrected version of the CIELAB color space, 2.) an image-dependent sigmoidal-lightness-rescaling process, 3.) an image-gamut- based chromatic-compression process, and 4.) a gamut-expansion process. This gamut-mapping paradigm was tested against some gamut-mapping strategies published in the literature. Reproductions generated by gamut mapping in a hue-corrected CIELAB color space more accurately preserved the perceived hue of the original scenes compared to reproductions generated using the CIELAB color space. The results of three gamut-mapping experiments showed that the contrast-preserving nature …

The use of pre-heated silica gel and alumina along with a chlorinating agent, generates HC1 in situ, which has been found to add to norbornadiene ( IX ). Treated in this fashion, norbornadiene readily results in the formation of two isomers, exo-5- chloronorbornene ( XI ) and 3-chloronotricyclene ( XII ) at room temperature in methylene chloride, with ejco-5-chloronorbornene being the predominant product ( 70% 1% ). In promoting the hydrohalogenation reaction, silica gel was found to be less efficient compared to alumina, but undesired diadducts appeared to be less prominent when silica gel rather than alumina was used. Conventional four-color printing systems are limited by an insufficient number of degrees of freedom for tuning the visible region of the spectrum; as a consequence, they are often limited to metameric color reproductions. That is, color matches defined for a single observer and illuminant (usually CIE illuminant D50 and the 1931 standard observer) are often unstable when viewed under other illuminants or by other observers. For critical color-matching applications, such as catalog sales and artwork reproductions, the results are usually disappointing due to typical uncontrolled lighting and viewing. This study was comprised of two related projects: a viscosity variability study and a trivalent cation study. For the first study, the dependence of viscosity of solutions of the polymer sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) on temperature was quantitatively determined so that the viscosity measurements from four sets of viscosity versus age of solution data could be normalized. The four sets of age of solution data were obtained for two solutions containing Al cation and for two solutions containing Mg cation. The temperature normalization procedure proved viable. This paper presents several unique "instantaneous center integration" (ICI) algorithms for use in studying unconstrained vehicle motion using computer simulations and animations. Specifically, these algorithms are most appropriate for the case when high angular rates are present, such as would occur during tight cornering and/or possibly during an accident. The three ICI algorithms presented are the "pseudo-exact", first order approximation and the second order approximation. These ICI algorithms are capable of producing valid, accurate, and efficient simulation results, which describe the behavior of a vehicle under these conditions. The "pseudo-exact" is the most accurate, yet the most computationally expensive. The …

Doppler blood velocity waveform analysis is conducted to affect clinical diagnosis. Current analysis codes developed at RIT posses the capability to assess gross hemodynamic parameters such as heart rate, mean pulse velocity, peak systolic velocity and also the beat to beat variability of these parameters. These computer algorithms have, however, lacked the ability to determine hemodynamic indices such as the pulsatility and resistance index as well as the AB ratio. The tradeoff between spatial and spectral resolution gives rise to a finite ground sample size, which produces data with spectrally mixed pixels in a multispectral and hyperspectral systems. Assuming the mixed pixel to be a linear combination of pure spectra known as endmembers, the fractional abundance of the endmembers can be calculated by linear spectral unmixing. Constraints may be placed to force the unmixed fractions to behave realistically. There are also different methods of selecting these endmember spectra, including scene derived and laboratory measured spectra.
