Dynamic Studies Of Multiterminal Dc-Ac Systems, Alireza Hamzei-Nejad, C. M. Ong Dec 1984

Dynamic Studies Of Multiterminal Dc-Ac Systems, Alireza Hamzei-Nejad, C. M. Ong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In transient stability programs that use a static dc network representation, the procedure to determine the control mode of operation and the solution of the multiterminal dc system is complex and time consuming. A systematic approach that is based on a linear programming formulation is presented in this thesis. The constraints incorporated in the LB formulation automatically ensure that the solution obtained is feasible. It is shown that the method is not only computationally efficient but also versatile in its ability to handle many of the common control characteristics, such as those of the constant angle (extinction and ignition), constant …

A Study Of A Semi-Direct Method For Computer Analysis Of Large-Scale Circuits, Marwan M. Hassoun, P. M. Lin Dec 1984

A Study Of A Semi-Direct Method For Computer Analysis Of Large-Scale Circuits, Marwan M. Hassoun, P. M. Lin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this thesis a study of a Semi-Direct method for the solution of large scale circuits is presented. The method combines features from the Newton- Raphson method and the Gauss-Seidel method. These two methods are both illustrated. The Semi-Direct method is presented both theoretically and empirically using three programs developed for this purpose. The Semi-Direct method and the Newton-Raphson method are compared. The comparison includes speed (number of iterations and execution time) and storage requirements. The Semi-Direct method definitely has storage advantages over the Newton-Raphson method at all circuit levels of 2 or more nodes. If some set conditions are …

Final Report: Theory Of Advanced High Efficiency Concentrator Cells, Mark S. Lunstrom, R. J. Schwartz, C. M. Maziar, P. D. Demoulin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The goal of this project was to begin -developing accurate, and ultimately predictive, device models for III-V concentrator cells. The project consisted of extending a one-dimensional numerical device model previously developed at Purdue to III-V solar cells. We also began verifying the accuracy of the code by comparing computed and measured solar cell characteristics. Gallium arsenide was selected because it is the most mature III-V technology and because GaAs solar cells have demonstrated high conversion efficiency [l,2,3]. The present device model should be useful in optimizing GaAs solar cells and forms a foundation that can be extended to other III-V …

Microprocessor- Oriented Algorithms For Data Communications, Veljko Milutinovic Dec 1984

Microprocessor- Oriented Algorithms For Data Communications, Veljko Milutinovic

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Data modem design has attracted a lot of scientific and commercial interest for more than three decades now. The field is important from a scientific point of view, since reliable data communications require very sophisticated solutions to many associated problems. From a commercial point of view its importance arises from the ever- rising needs for Computer networking and distributed processing in general. Modem algorithms are real-time in nature, so adequate technological support is important for modem design development. Advances in VLSI are opening new possibilities in this area and current trends toward integration of computing and communications are placing new …

Parallel Algorithms For Isolated And Connected Word Recognition, Mark Alan Yoder, Leah H. Jamieson Dec 1984

Parallel Algorithms For Isolated And Connected Word Recognition, Mark Alan Yoder, Leah H. Jamieson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

For years researchers have worked toward finding a way to allow people to talk to machines in the same manner a person communicates to another person. This verbal man to machine interface, called speech recognition, can be grouped into three types: isolated word recognition, connected word recognition, and continuous speech recognition. Isolated word recognizers recognize single words with distinctive pauses before and after them. Continuous speech recognizers recognize speech spoken as one person speaks to another, continuously without pauses. Connected word recognition is an extension of isolated word recognition which recognizes groups of words spoken continuously. A group of words …

Irradiation-Hyperthermia In Canine Hemangiopericytomas: Large-Animal Model For Therapeutic Response, Ralph C. Richardson, Virgil L. Anderson, William D. Voorhees, William E. Blevins, Tammy K. Inskeep, Wolfgang Janas, Robert E. Shupe, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Results of irradiation-hyperthermia treatment in 11 dogs with naturally occurring hemangiopericytomas are reported. Similarities of canine and human hemangiopericytomas are described. Orthovoltage X-irradiation followed by microwaveinduced hyperthermia resulted in a 91% objective response rate. A statistical procedure was given to evaluate quantitatively the clinical behavior of locally invasive, nonmetastatic tumors in dogs that were undergoing therapy for control of local disease. The procedure used a small sample size and demonstrated distribution of the data on a scaled response as well as transformation of the data through classical parametric and nonparametric statistical methods. These statistical methods set confidence limits on the …

Dynamic Systolization For Developing Multiprocessor Supercomputers, Kai Hwang, Zhiwei Xu Oct 1984

Dynamic Systolization For Developing Multiprocessor Supercomputers, Kai Hwang, Zhiwei Xu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A dynamic network approach is introduced for developing reconfigurable, systolic arrays or wavefront processors; This allows one to design very powerful and flexible processors to be used in a general-purpose, reconfigurable, and fault-tolerant, multiprocessor computer system. The concepts of macro-dataflow and multitasking can be integrated to handle variable-resolution granularities in computationally intensive algorithms. A multiprocessor architecture, Remps, is proposed based on these design methodologies. The Remps architecture is generalized from the Cedar, HEP, Cray X- MP, Trac, NYU ultracomputer, S-l, Pumps, Chip, and SAM projects. Our goal is to provide a multiprocessor research model for developing design methodologies, multiprocessing and …

Amorphous Silicon Thin Film Transistor Fabrication And Models, G. W. Neudeck, Zhi Li, T. C. Lee Oct 1984

Amorphous Silicon Thin Film Transistor Fabrication And Models, G. W. Neudeck, Zhi Li, T. C. Lee

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

One of the primary purposes of this research was to develop techniques to improve the quality of vacuum evaporated amorphous silicon (a-Si), i.e. lower the density of localized states in the mobility gap. The electron beam evaporation of amorphouss silicon and hydrogenation by ion implanting has proved promising. This technique permits independent control of amorphous silicon disorder and the hydrogenation level, thereby separating the process of hydrogenation from that of film deposition. Electrical measurement of field effect conductance changes was used as a probing tool to monitor changes in the properties of a-Si before and after hydrogenation. Field effect data …
