Resource Modelling For The Qc Laboratory At Xyz Pharmaceuticals In Southern Africa, Ngonidzashe Portia Munhuweyi, Z Ekeocha, S Byrn, K Clase
BIRS Africa Technical Report Papers
Quality control (QC) laboratories are critical components in drug manufacturing and running them efficiently contributes to better, consistent supply of cost-effective quality products, while also and preventing deaths due to untimely delivery or unavailability of medicines. Having a resource modelling tool to estimate resources needed to handle a particular demand in a given system is essential for efficient running of QC laboratory. This study was done to establish such a model at XYZ Pharmaceuticals. The list of all products manufactured by XYZ Pharmaceuticals Southern Africa was reviewed; and product families for all products were identified. Analysts’ hands on time (HOT) …

While various models and methods have been proposed for operating and controlling building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, equipment decay (e.g., chiller tube fouling or boiler scaling), which results in lower energy efficiency and higher cost, has received limited attention. Accordingly, in this paper, we present an optimization model (mixed-integer linear programming, MILP) for predictive maintenance of HVAC systems with sufficient thermal energy storage (TES). We simultaneously consider the operation and maintenance schedule because of their close mutual interdependence. In addition, a method to accurately approximate equipment operation is provided for long-term scheduling. The proposed model offers decisions …

We describe a supervisory control strategy for limiting peak power demand by small and medium commercial buildings while still meeting the business needs of the occupants. The objective of the supervisory control is to operate no more than

In this paper, we examine closed-loop operation of an HVAC central plant to demonstrate that closed-loop receding-horizon scheduling provides robustness to inaccurate forecasts, and that economic performance is not seriously impaired by shortened prediction horizons or inaccurate forecasts when feedback is employed. Using a general mixed-integer linear programming formulation for the scheduling problem, we show that optimization can be performed in real time. Furthermore, we demonstrate that closed-loop operation with a moderate prediction horizon is not significantly worse than a long-horizon implementation in the nominal case, and that closed-loop operation can correct for inaccurate long-term forecasts without significant cost increase. …

In 2005 the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) went through a complete reorganization of its operations going from centralized to decentralized (District) management. This reorganization gave Districts autonomy to manage construction projects with one exception all added capacity projects are managed in the central office by the office of project management. Following in 2006 INDOT initiated a program named “Major Moves.” This is a ten year major road building program that was funded partially through a $4 billion lease of the Indiana Toll Road. Through Major Moves annual new construction will go from $213 million in FY 2006 to $1.2 …

Recent studies suggest that timing and tasks involving executive control processes might require the same attentional resources. This should lead to interference when timing and executive tasks are executed concurrently. This study examines the interference between timing and task switching, an executive function. In four experiments, memory search and digit classification were performed successively in four conditions: search-search (search followed by search), search-digit, digit-search and digit-digit. In a control reaction-time condition, participants provided RT responses in each of the two tasks. In a time-production condition, an RT response was provided to the first stimulus, but the response to the second …

Healthcare is changing daily with the introduction of technology. Heart catheterization is one area that has excelled in the new technology that is constantly being introduced. Facilities are being built which provide patients with diagnostics and treatments that save lives daily. Due to the continual improvement of healthcare processes, it is also important to review process and continually improve efficiency. The catheterization lab patient care process must provide quality patient care that exceeds expectations of all involved. A project was completed to train a team that would implement process improvement. The team was made up of the technicians, nurses and …

An efficient use of a Distributed Heterogeneous Supercomputing System (DHSS) requhes a thorough understanding of applications and their intelligent scheduling within the system. In this paper we present a general management framework for the DHSS, by introducing an application characterization technique, called Code Flow Graph (CFG) and Code Interaction Graph (CIG). These models are based on code profiling and andyticd benchmarking and provide a detailed archiitecturaldependent characterization of DHSS applications. A generd cost function is presented that is based on the execution and 1/0 overheads associated with applications. An optimd scheduler tries to minimize this cost; the design of which …
