Design Students’ Perspectives On Safety Concerns When Designing Future Tourism Services, Minna Virkkula, Laura Hokkanen, Jonna Häkkilä
GSTC Academic Symposium - In conjunction with the GSTC Global Conference Sweden April 23, 2024
The safety of services is essential part of a company's social responsibility. In the tourism industry, ensuring the safety of services is crucial, but often overlooked in the design process. Incorporating safety aspects during the initial design phase can eliminate potential safety issues and improve quality of the services. By addressing safety concerns early on, unnecessary worries related to activities and services can be resolved. This paper examines the design perspective on safety in Lapland outdoor activities. Two studies were conducted with art and design students, including an online survey to identify safety concerns in various tourist scenarios, and a …

Understanding Engineering Design Fixation For K-12 Education, Sopheak Seng, William S. Walker Iii
Indiana STEM Education Conference
Design fixation is a distinct and established research topic at a post-secondary level which has shown that practitioners of engineering in any capacity (e.g., K-12 students, engineering students, college professors, or professional engineers) can experience fixation. Some research has shown that elementary and secondary students exhibit signs of design fixation while working on engineering design challenges (Luo, 2017; Mentzer et al., 2015). This research brief provides a definition of design fixation, describe fixation in the K-12 classroom, and suggest additional needed research.

Complex Impacts Of Wars On Global Sustainable Development In A Metacoupled World, Qutu Jiang, Zhenci Xu, Yuanzheng Cui, Jianguo Liu
I-GUIDE Forum
Wars and armed conflicts have had profound impacts on local and global sustainable development in an interconnected world. However, evidence on the impacts of wars is fragmented and little attention has been paid to the impacts on the 17 UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a unifying framework for achieving global sustainable development. This perspective synthesizes the scattered information to provide a holistic analysis and highlight the applications of remote sensing in assessing the impacts of wars on global sustainable development in a metacoupling world. Wars have complex impacts on all 17 SDGs, which cascade beyond conflict zones and spillover to …

I-GUIDE Forum
In this paper, we propose a new form of multidisciplinary academic collaboration that goes beyond the traditional modes of knowledge exchange. We argue that most research collaboration today is based on interactions between closely related disciplines, in which researchers share data, methods, and insights within a common framework or problem. However, such collaboration may not foster the development of the communication and management skills essential to a multi-disciplinary research career. Therefore, we suggest establishing a network of researchers from divergent, yet complementary, disciplines who are interested in improving these skills through regular interactions and feedback. The main goal of this …

Teachers' Beliefs As A Tool To Extend The Cognitive Equity Concept, Ana-Maria Haiduc, Rose Mbewe, Signe E. Kastberg
Indiana STEM Education Conference
This research aims to extend the framing of the cognitive equity concept in teaching mathematics during the enacted phase of the curriculum beyond race and culture. Cognitive equity characterizes actions of teachers and curricula makers toward valuing differences in cognitive processes. Since beliefs influence teachers' actions, we investigate their ideas about valuing students' unique mathematical cognitive processes. Framing cognitive equity in teaching mathematics contributes to discovering teachers' equitable practices, thus revealing teachers' ways of making more inclusive cognitive curricular decisions. Future research could focus on framing cognitive equity in learning mathematics within the intended and implemented phase of the curriculum.

Learning From The Past To Guide The Future: Partnership In Practice, Chris L. Moselen
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
After the development of a library vision and strategy in 2017, and a restructure in 2018, we had little idea of the impact that one of the statements in our vision was going to have on our cultural journey for the next 5 years – and beyond. The statement “Te Tiriti o Waitangi underpins all we do” was a bold claim which had to be honoured. Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) is a treaty signed in 1840 between Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, and the Crown (the Queen of England and the British Government). In …

Weaving Open Dialogue Using Canada’S Open Science Roadmap Framework, Heather Cunningham, Christina S.Y. Kim
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Open science (OS) as a movement has transformative potential in making the process of scientific research transparent and collaborative as well as the outputs freely accessible to all in society. However, these opportunities and challenges are subject to biases and entrenched in power disparities. In addition, the very broad nature of open science also invokes challenges in having meaningful discussions. In 2020, the Government of Canada unveiled a national framework, Roadmap to Open Science, which provided overarching principles and recommendations to allow federal science to be open to all. The University of Toronto (U of T) used this national open …

Exploring Youths’ Decision To Participate In Stem Afterschool Programs, Brooke M. Stafford, Virginia L. J. Bolshakova
Exploring Youths’ Decision To Participate In Stem Afterschool Programs, Brooke M. Stafford, Virginia L. J. Bolshakova
Indiana STEM Education Conference
STEM afterschool programs offer a range of academic, social, and emotional outcomes to support positive youth development. In particular, STEM afterschool programs have been shown to increase student self-efficacy and interest in pursuing STEM careers (Chan et al., 2020; Dabney et al., 2012). Youth must first choose to attend the STEM afterschool programs to gain the many benefits offered. However, participation in such programs decreases as youth get older and encounter additional competing interests (i.e., home responsibilities, jobs, etc.). To get youth to attend, STEM afterschool programs must meet the needs of youth by leveraging resources, activities, and relationships.
