Information Literacy Integration As Quality Enhancement Of Undergraduate Curriculum, Philip A. Smith
Information Literacy Integration As Quality Enhancement Of Undergraduate Curriculum, Philip A. Smith
Communications in Information Literacy
Objective: A tiered curriculum integrated information literacy program developed for a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is described in brief. The literature related to curriculum integrated information literacy programs is reviewed. Assessment data is analyzed to show the impact of the program on undergraduate students' abilities to improve information literacy competencies in upper level undergraduate research projects in a variety of disciplines. Methods: Mixed methods are used. Standardized information literacy assessments are used to establish baseline knowledge levels of IL skills of undergraduate students entering [Institution Name] beginning in Fall 2009. A locally developed rubric is used to determine how well …
Do People Overestimate Their Information Literacy Skills? A Systematic Review Of Empirical Evidence On The Dunning-Kruger Effect, Khalid Mahmood
Do People Overestimate Their Information Literacy Skills? A Systematic Review Of Empirical Evidence On The Dunning-Kruger Effect, Khalid Mahmood
Communications in Information Literacy
This systematic review has analyzed 53 studies that assessed and compared peoples' self-reported and demonstrated information literacy skills. The objective was to collect empirical evidence on the existence of Dunning-Kruger Effect in the area of information literacy. The findings clearly show that this theory works in this area. It is concluded that there is no calibration in peoples' perceived and actual IL skills. In most of the cases, low-performers overestimate their skills in self-assessments. The findings have theoretical and practical implications for librarians and IL educators.
Manufacturing Consent In The Maghreb: How Mohammed Vi Of Morocco Survived The Arab Spring, David Michael Duke Ii
Manufacturing Consent In The Maghreb: How Mohammed Vi Of Morocco Survived The Arab Spring, David Michael Duke Ii
Dissertations and Theses
The Arab Spring of 2011 revealed stark variation in the durability of different types of authoritarian regimes. Kings and emirs demonstrably outperformed their republican peers. This paper provides a qualitative study of the Moroccan monarchy in order to better explain this pattern. The findings of an original media content analysis support the paper's thesis that Morocco's King Mohammed VI maintained his throne by effectively using a historically derived position of concentrated power and immense wealth to manipulate potential opposition and dominate public discourse. This multi-causal mechanism of manufactured consent helped create and sustain the monarch's domestic legitimacy while alienating his …
Wiki-Based Collaborative Creative Writing In The Esl Classroom, Rima Elabdali
Wiki-Based Collaborative Creative Writing In The Esl Classroom, Rima Elabdali
Dissertations and Theses
Despite the growing number of L2 studies examining digitally-mediated collaborative writing, the vast majority of these studies have focused on academic writing tasks. This study examined the dynamics and perceptions of groups of ESL students who used wikis to write collaborative short stories. The study also compared the short stories written in groups with posttest short stories written individually in terms of creativity, accuracy, and complexity. The study involved nine students taking a Creative Writing course in an intensive English program at a large university in the U.S. It followed a multiple case study design; the students were divided into …
The Effectiveness Of Participation In A Project-Based Learning Project On At-Risk Student Self-Efficacy, Benjamin Aaron Weber
The Effectiveness Of Participation In A Project-Based Learning Project On At-Risk Student Self-Efficacy, Benjamin Aaron Weber
Dissertations and Theses
Project-based learning is a multifaceted approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges while working in small collaborative groups. Project-based learning is active and engaging and drives students to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying, and students develop confidence and self-direction as they move through both team-based and independent work. This project endeavored to assess the effect of participation in a project-based learning (PBL) activity of the Wind and Oar Boat School's curriculum on the self-efficacy of at-risk high school students. Twenty students participated in the program for both math and applied arts credits …
A Meta-Analysis Of The Nomological Network Of Work Ability, Grant Brady
A Meta-Analysis Of The Nomological Network Of Work Ability, Grant Brady
Dissertations and Theses
As the workforces of industrialized countries around the world continue to age, research is needed to better understand how policies regarding retirement, and exit from the workforce, impact older workers. In particular, it is important to identify mechanisms that can be used to understand and promote the retention of older workers. Work ability (WA), a construct that has been predominately studied in Scandinavian and European countries, has been studied in this context, and identified as a predictor of exit from the workforce. Using the Job Demands-Resources model (JDR; Demerouti, Bakker, Nachreiner, & Schaufeli, 2001) as the theoretical basis, the goal …
Vulnerability And Protective Factors Of Stress-Related Drinking: An Exploration Of Individual And Day-Level Predictors Of Alcohol Involvement, Cameron Trim Mccabe
Vulnerability And Protective Factors Of Stress-Related Drinking: An Exploration Of Individual And Day-Level Predictors Of Alcohol Involvement, Cameron Trim Mccabe
Dissertations and Theses
Problem alcohol use has far-reaching economic, intra-, and interpersonal consequences. One particularly hazardous form of drinking pertains to the consumption of alcohol as a means of regulating stress, or drinking to cope. As such, it is critical to identify pathways through which stress-related alcohol use occurs, as well as protective factors which may mitigate the aforementioned consequences. To achieve this, I conducted three studies examining these topics at multiple levels of analysis among two at risk populations for engaging in problematic drinking: College students and military service members. Study 1 is a published manuscript examining the association between personality, a …

Research & Strategic Partnerships: Quarterly Review, Volume 3, Issue 3, Portland State University. Research & Strategic Partnerships
Portland State Research Magazine
This issue of the Quarterly Review focuses on population health and strategies to improve it. Although these strategies may be revised and added to in the years ahead, the “Triple Aim” of addressing health costs, improving the experience of care, and maintaining healthy populations will undoubtedly remain unchanged, as will our drive to better understand the role of public health in developing resilient people and communities.
The research highlighted in this issue also bears witness to the importance of community and the ways in which Portland State University and the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health are empowering communities to live …

North Santiam School District Population And Enrollment Forecasts, 2017-18 To 2031-32, Portland State University. Population Research Center, Charles Rynerson, Scott Stewart, Nicholas Chun
School District Enrollment Forecast Reports
This report presents a series of three scenarios of district-wide enrollment forecasts by grade level for the North Santiam School District (NSSD) for the 15-year period between 2017-18 and 2031-32. Each enrollment forecast scenario is related to population forecasts that incorporate different assumptions about growth within the District, with the primary differences being the contribution of net migration to the District’s population and age distribution. Individual school forecasts consistent with the middle series scenario are also presented for the 15-year period.
The Knowledge Of Ideophones In Multilingual Contexts: A West African Pilot Study, George Tucker Childs
The Knowledge Of Ideophones In Multilingual Contexts: A West African Pilot Study, George Tucker Childs
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This presentation examines the ubiquity of multilingualism and its somewhat uncertain characterization; the claim for linguistic repertoires vs. languages; how to evaluate and document a linguistic repertoire, economically and expeditiously; ideophones as functionally areal but formally local, thus a control for borrowings; and, is there any sharing in highly multilingual areas? Are ideophones less local than has been empirically shown?

Real Talk: Developing A Computer-Delivered Sexual Health Program For Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Charles H. Klein, Carmela Lomonaco
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
HIV disproportionately affects Black men who have sex with men (MSM), yet there are few evidence-based programs that respond to the diverse realities of Black MSM communities. This article examines the development of Real Talk, a new harm reduction-based, sexual health intervention for Black MSM. We first analyze the key themes from our formative research: (1) stigma, discrimination, and intersectionalities in the lives of Black MSM, (2) the importance of safe spaces and community provided by health promotion programs, and (3) moving beyond condoms in sexual health messaging. We then describe our agile design product development process and present an …

Who’S The Fairest Of Them All? The Fractured Landscape Of U.S. Fair Trade Certification, Daniel Jaffee, Philip H. Howard
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
In recent years, consumers in the United States have been confronted by no fewer than four competing fair-trade labels, each grounded in a separate certification system and widely differing standards. This fracturing is partly a response to the recent split by the U.S. certifier Fair Trade USA from the international fair trade system, but also illustrates longstanding divisions within the fair trade movement. This article explores the dynamics of competition among nonstate standards through content analyses of fair trade standards documents from the four U.S. fair-trade certifications for agrifood products (Fair Trade USA, Fairtrade America, Fair for Life, and the …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Exposure to fine particulate matter ( PM2.5) is a major contributor to the global human disease burden. The indoor environment is of particular importance when considering the health effects associated with PM2.5 exposures because people spend the majority of their time indoors and PM2.5 exposures per unit mass emitted indoors are two to three orders of magnitude larger than exposures to outdoor emissions. Variability in indoor PM2.5 intake fraction ( iFin,total), which is defined as the integrated cumulative intake of PM2.5 per unit of emission, is driven by a combination of building-specific, human-specific, and pollutant-specific factors. Due to a limited …
Behind The Curtain: Fetishism And The Production Of Virtual Reality Treatment For Ptsd, Janice Haaken, Mariel Stadick
Behind The Curtain: Fetishism And The Production Of Virtual Reality Treatment For Ptsd, Janice Haaken, Mariel Stadick
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Virtual Iraq/Afghanistan, a virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy designed for the treatment of combat-related PTSD, has generated wide public interest in the wake of growing concerns over mental health problems among service members. Enlisting concepts from the fields of cultural studies and psychoanalytic film criticism, the paper interprets the VR therapy program as a form of technology fetishism within the expanding apparatus of military mental health operations. Even as the program seeks to expose the “invisible wounds of war,” the stories produced through this use of visual culture conform closely to hegemonic military accounts of the psychological effects of combat.

Seeing The Forest For The Roads: Auto-Tourism And Wilderness Preservation In Mount Hood National Forest, 1913-64, Taylor Elliott Rose
Dissertations and Theses
Between 1913 and 1964, automobile roads appeared throughout the Cascade Mountains around Mount Hood, just east of Portland, Oregon. From elaborate scenic highways to primitive dirt trails, each had its own story. Many of them are gone today, decommissioned and decomposing with the rotting understory soil of the forest. However, some remain as the most utilized spaces in Mount Hood National Forest, one of the most popular public land units for recreation in the country, owned and managed by the United States Forest Service. "Seeing the Forest for the Roads" uncovers the history of why roads were built, who planned …
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: A Content Analysis Of Self-Inflicted Face-Ism On Instagram, Madeline Powell
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: A Content Analysis Of Self-Inflicted Face-Ism On Instagram, Madeline Powell
University Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore potential gendered stereotypes by examining the facial prominence of male and female celebrities’ social media images. The face-ism theory evaluates the facial prominence of a depiction; higher facial prominence prompts viewers of media to assume the person they are observing is more intelligent and more likeable in general. In previous research men had higher facial prominence than women, which calls in to question the perpetuation of gendered stereotypes in media. This research is a content analysis of 300 self-selected Instagram photos, posted by the top 30 followed men and women celebrities on …

Improvement in trunk range of motion has been considered to be an important factor in ameliorating the symptoms of LBP. Kinesio® taping is a prominent therapeutic modality commonly used in the variety of populations for treating musculoskeletal conditions. However, previous research on the efficacy of Kinesio® taping for LBP is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate and short-term effects of Kinesio® taping with the muscle inhibition technique on active trunk flexion range of motion. Twenty-five subjects with …
The Efficacy And Feasibility Of A Context-Specific Autism Behavior Rating Tool With Real Time Data Collection Methods From The Perspectives Of Clinicians, Educators, And Parents, Kathleen Marie Panaccione
The Efficacy And Feasibility Of A Context-Specific Autism Behavior Rating Tool With Real Time Data Collection Methods From The Perspectives Of Clinicians, Educators, And Parents, Kathleen Marie Panaccione
Dissertations and Theses
The incidence of autism has increased tremendously over the past 20 years; however, the tools used for diagnosis and educational identification have largely remained the same. Diagnostic and educational decisions are based on observations and interactions to identify hallmark skill deficits associated with autism. Research demonstrates behaviors are affected by the environment, and real-time data collection is more accurate than reflective methods.
The problem is current autism diagnostic and educational identification tools lack essential features. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), considered the gold standard, relies on contrived settings, and lacks an observational comparison to same aged peers. Autism behavior …

The Role Of Recovery From Work In Work Stress-Related Drinking, Brittnie Renae Shepherd
The Role Of Recovery From Work In Work Stress-Related Drinking, Brittnie Renae Shepherd
Dissertations and Theses
Alcohol consumption has been linked to numerous adverse health and well-being outcomes; therefore determining what motivates individuals to drink is of utmost importance. One reason individuals may drink is to cope with work demands and their associated strain. This may be especially relevant for correctional officers (COs) as this occupation has been associated with high levels of job stressors and strain and heavy drinking. Drawing primarily on the job demands-resources and ego depletion models, this study examined how emotional job demands contribute to CO exhaustion and alcohol use. Additionally, interactions between common recovery from work experiences and exhaustion were tested …
