The perception and performance of masculinities in the United States has been a topic that, on its own, has garnered relatively little research attention in existing literature. Only in recent years have we seen an increase in attention given towards the study and understanding of masculinities and their role in American society. The current climate for trans folks in the U.S. remains increasingly hostile and many researchers have called attention to the "joy deficit" within the existing trans literature (Shuster & Westbrook, 2022). This study investigates what trans individuals are currently doing to survive, thrive, and resist in a belligerent socio-political climate. To answer this, five community conversations with 25 participants were held using a semi-structured conversation guide. Within the analysis, the central theme that emerged was that trans individuals are using their communities to create radical futures. Because of the expressive capabilities of art, the LGBTQ+ community has long been associated with music. My thesis aims to explore and inform the compositional process of transgender and non-binary (gender non-conforming) composers. While researching this topic, most of the articles I was able to find were concerned with the physical and social difficulties transgender vocalists experience. Due to this gap in the academic discourse, I decided to focus on the compositional process for instrumental pieces of music in order to understand some of the specific difficulties that surround transgender instrumentalists.
