On Modeling Of A Mobile Multipath Fading Channel, Heng Xiao Dec 1994

On Modeling Of A Mobile Multipath Fading Channel, Heng Xiao

Dissertations and Theses

Multipath fading is one of the major practical concerns in wireless communications. A multipath transmission takes place when a transmitted signal arrives at a receiver by two or more paths of different delay. Such multiple paths may be due to atmospheric reflection or refraction, or reflections from buildings or other objects. A multipath fading channel is usually modeled as a time-variant tapped delay system. RAKE receiver can be used to detect the signal from the multipath fading channel. However, the number of delay taps, the time delay of each path, and the tap weight for each delay path need to …

The Anabaptist Contributions To The Idea Of Religious Liberty, Barbara Monette Dec 1994

The Anabaptist Contributions To The Idea Of Religious Liberty, Barbara Monette

Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between ideas and history is important in order to understand the past and the present. The idea of religious liberty and the realization of that ideal in sixteenth-century Europe by the Anabaptists in Switzerland and South Germany in the 1520s was considered to be revolutionary in a society characterized by the union of church and state. The main impetus of the idea of religious liberty for the Anabaptists was the application of the New Testament standard of the Christian church, which was an independent congregation of believers marked only by adult baptism.

The purpose of the present study …

Methodology For Accurate Speedup Prediction, Aruna Chittor Dec 1994

Methodology For Accurate Speedup Prediction, Aruna Chittor

Dissertations and Theses

The effective use of computational resources requires a good understanding of parallel architectures and algorithms. The effect of the parallel architecture and also the parallel application on the performance of the parallel systems becomes more complex with increasing numbers of processors. We will address this issue in this thesis, and develop a methodology to predict the overall execution time of a parallel application as a function of the system and problem size by combining simple analysis with a few experimental results. We show that runtimes and speedup can be predicted more accurately by analyzing the functional forms of the sequential …

Indicators Of Nutrient Limited Plankton Growth In Lakes Near Mount Saint Helens, Washington, Kurt Davis Carpenter Dec 1994

Indicators Of Nutrient Limited Plankton Growth In Lakes Near Mount Saint Helens, Washington, Kurt Davis Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses

Several lakes located in the blast zone of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens were studied to determine if the plankton in the lakes were limited in their growth by nitrogen or phosphorus availability. Long term nutrient enrichment experiments were performed on lake water from five lakes and measures of chlorophyll-a, carbon fixation, and nutrient uptake were used to evaluate the extent of limitation. Nutrient concentrations, ratios, and uptake from 14 lakes provided additional evidence for limitation by nitrogen and/or phosphorus. The physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the lakes were also examined to monitor the return of these …

Causal Attributions For Teen Problem Drinking, Barbara J. Seatter Dec 1994

Causal Attributions For Teen Problem Drinking, Barbara J. Seatter

Dissertations and Theses

Teen problem-drinking is a pervasive problem in our society. Teens with drinking problems utilize treatment centers and then return to school attempting to stay sober. However, many return to affiliate with problem drinkers instead of with non-drinkers, and risk for relapse is high. One explanation may be that teens without drinking problems do not accept teen problem drinkers into their peer group due to negative reactions toward problem drinkers. One way to examine their attitudes is to examine differences between teen problem drinkers and non-drinkers regarding causal attributions. Attribution theory proposes that various attributions will elicit different emotional reactions and …

Predicting Solute Transport In Natural Streams - A Stochastic Approach, Xueqing Zhou Dec 1994

Predicting Solute Transport In Natural Streams - A Stochastic Approach, Xueqing Zhou

Dissertations and Theses

The existing theories for predicting longitudinal dispersion in straight open channels have long been recognized as inadequate when applied to natural rivers. These theories tend to grossly underestimate dispersion in real streams since an important mixing mechanism due to nonuniform river cross-section variations is not explicitly taken into account. Recognizing the important role of stream irregularities on solute transport and the analytical difficulties of classical deterministic analysis, we develop a stochastic approach for analyzing solute transport in natural streams. Variations in river width and bed elevation are conveniently represented as one-dimensional random fields, characterized by their autocorrelation functions. Advection and …

Erp Analysis Using Matched Filtering And Wavelet Transform, Xueming Lin Nov 1994

Erp Analysis Using Matched Filtering And Wavelet Transform, Xueming Lin

Dissertations and Theses

Event related potentials (ERP's) carry very important information that relates to the performance of the brain functions of the human being. Further studies have identified that one component, in particular, P300, is affected by the memory process. Matched filter is used to improved the SNR of signal ERP's. We use the output of the matched filter to distinguish the difference of the waveforms between normal subjects and memory-impaired subjects. In our study, we found that the peak values of the matched filtering output were different between normal subjects and memoryimpaired subjects. Also, as an application, wavelet transform is …

An Improved English Article System For Japanese Speakers, Dorothy Jean Frew Nov 1994

An Improved English Article System For Japanese Speakers, Dorothy Jean Frew

Dissertations and Theses

One aspect of the English language which has been overlooked by English-as-a-Second-Language educators is the article system, a, the, and 0. For students from articleless first languages such as Japanese, learning this complex system is a formidable challenge. Performance studies show an error rate among advanced Japanese students of approximately thirty percent. There may be several reasons for this high rate: 1) the differences between Japanese and English, 2) the unusually high degree of complexity/difficulty of the article system itself compared to other English morpheme systems and 3) inadequate treatments of the subject as revealed in this thesis' survey of …

Investigations On Glycolipid Production By Pseudomonas Putida Grown On Toluene In Batch And Continuous Culture Conditions, Keith Foorest Dockery

Dissertations and Theses

Utilization of toluene by Pseudomonas putida as its sole carbon and energy source affects morphology, outer membrane protein composition, and glycolipid production. Two strains of P. putida were found to utilize toluene and to coexist in continuous and batch culture. The two strains were designated translucent and opaque, based upon their readily identifiable coloration when grown on Luria agar. The translucent strain was the dominant strain in continuous culture conditions. The outer membrane proteins of P. putida were separated by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. When toluene is the carbon and energy source, the trend in protein composition was …

The Origins And Development Of The Defense Forces Of Northern And Southern Rhodesia From 1890 To 1945, Eugene Peter Jarrett Pomeroy

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines Northern and Southern Rhodesia's history through the formation and development of their police and military units from the time Rhodesia was created in 1890 until the end of the Second World War. Southern Rhodesia, founded after a series of short and bloody frontier wars, was a self-governing British colony under a white minority and centered its peace-time security efforts around keeping an eye on potential uprisings from the African majority. White Northern Rhodesians viewed the African majority with similar suspicion although they were never able to exclude Africans from territorial defense. Northern Rhodesia was governed from London …

Of interest was the development of inflammation through the accumulation of neutrophils associated with larvae of Trichinella in mouse skeletal muscle. This was evaluated with routine histological stains, endogenous peroxidase staining and immunohistochemical …

Establishing Us Military Government: Law And Order In Southern Bavaria 1945, Stephen Frederick Anderson Nov 1994

Establishing Us Military Government: Law And Order In Southern Bavaria 1945, Stephen Frederick Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

In May 1945, United States Military Government (MG) detachments arrived in assigned areas of Bavaria to launch the occupation. By the summer of 1945, the US occupiers became the ironical combination of stern victor and watchful master. Absolute control gave way to the "direction" of German authority. For this process to succeed, MG officials had to establish a stable, clearly defined and fundamentally strict environment in which German officials would begin to exercise token control. The early occupation was a highly unstable stage of chaos, fear and confusing objectives. MG detachments and the reconstituted German authorities performed complex tasks with …

Two Dimensional Finite Element Modeling Of Swift Delta Soil Nail Wall By "Abaqus", Richard James Barrows Nov 1994

Two Dimensional Finite Element Modeling Of Swift Delta Soil Nail Wall By "Abaqus", Richard James Barrows

Dissertations and Theses

Soil nail walls are a form of mechanical earth stabilization for cut situations. They consist of the introduction of passive inclusions (nails) into soil cut lifts. These nailed lifts are then tied together with a structural facing (usually shotcrete) . The wall lifts are constructed incrementally from the top of cut down. Soil nail walls are being recognized as having potential for large cost savings over other alternatives. The increasing need to provide high capacity roadways in restricted rights of way under structures such as bridges will require increasing use of techniques such as combined soil nail and piling walls. …

The Relationship Between Intelligibility And Length And Complexity Of Language In A Group Of 4- And 5-Year-Old Children, Susan Fodell

Dissertations and Theses

Previous research has indicated that speech and linguistic variables develop concurrently. When one aspect of speech and linguistic development is delayed, there are typically associated delays in another area as well. This interactive relationship has been studied extensively in the context of phonological and syntactical development, as well as fluency and syntactical development. The relationship between intelligibility and linguistic proficiency has not been studied as extensively. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between varying levels of intelligibility and length and complexity of language in preschool-aged children. Mean length of utterance was correlated with the mean percentage …

This study sought to answer the following questions: 1) Is there a significant difference in prevalence of language problems in two groups of children: those with SELD and those with a normal language history?, and 2) Is there a greater probability …

British Aristocratic Women And Their Role In Politics, 1760-1860, Nancy Ann Henderson Nov 1994

British Aristocratic Women And Their Role In Politics, 1760-1860, Nancy Ann Henderson

Dissertations and Theses

British aristocratic women exerted political influence and power during the century beginning with the accession of George III. They expressed their political power through the four roles of social patron, patronage distributor, political advisor, and political patron/electioneer. British aristocratic women were able, trained, and expected to play these roles. Politics could not have existed without these women. The source of their political influence was the close interconnection of politics and society. In this small, inter-connected society, women could and did influence politics. Political decisions, especially for the Whigs, were not made in the halls of government with which we are …

Second Grade Academic Performance In Normal Children, Children With A History Of, And Children With Expressive Language Delay, Kathleen Ann Clancy

Dissertations and Theses

Interest in children who are diagnosed with expressive language delay has increased over the years. This has resulted in follow-up studies which have suggested that these children would have difficulties in academics during their elementary school years (Hall & Tomblin, 1978; Weiner, 1974) The current study sought to determine if children with a history of and children with continued expressive language delay would have problems with academics once they reached the second grade. The Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT) was used to measure academic performance. It was chosen for it's reliable standardization and use of five different subtest areas to …

The Tumult Of Amboise And The Importance Of Historical Memory In Sixteenth-Century France, Trevor Charles Schmitz-Thursam Nov 1994

The Tumult Of Amboise And The Importance Of Historical Memory In Sixteenth-Century France, Trevor Charles Schmitz-Thursam

Dissertations and Theses

Humanist legal scholarship was the catalyst to historical revolution that took place in sixteenth-century France. French philologists succeeded in demonstrating the cultural distinctiveness of France from a heretofore assumed classical heritage shared with ancient Rome. As a result, scholars sought to retrace the historical origins of France in the non-Roman Gauls and Franks. Their intensive study of the laws, customs and institutions that developed in France, as distinct from ancient Rome, transformed the understanding of the national past. Following the introduction of the principles of historical anachronism and cultural relativism, the sixteenth century witnessed a transformation of traditional perceptions of …

Gender Differences In Slow Expressive Language Development, Cynthia Lee Hare-Blye Oct 1994

Gender Differences In Slow Expressive Language Development, Cynthia Lee Hare-Blye

Dissertations and Theses

The contemporary research suggests that some children who present with early language delays as toddlers outgrow their delays while others continue to develop long-term language difficulties. Several studies over the years have focused on factors that might aid in predicting the outcome of late talkers. This current study emphasized exploring gender as a possible predictive factor. The purpose of this study was to determine if significant differences exist in the rate of growth in language skills, as indexed by scores on the Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) procedure (Lee, 1974) of boys versus girls who are late to start talking as …

An Analysis Of Approaches To Efficient Hardware Realization Of Image Compression Algorithms, Kamran Iravani Oct 1994

An Analysis Of Approaches To Efficient Hardware Realization Of Image Compression Algorithms, Kamran Iravani

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis an attempt has been made to develop a fast algorithm to compress images. The Reed-Muller compression algorithm which was introduced by Reddy & Pai [3] is fast, but the compression factor is too low when compared to the other methods. In this thesis first research has been done to improve this method by generalizing the Reed-Muller transform to the fixed polarity Reed-Muller form. This thesis shows that the Fixed Polarity Reed-Muller transform does not improve the compression factor enough to warrant its use as an image compression method. The paper, by Reddy & Pai [3], on Reed-Muller …
