Daily Technology Interruptions And Emotional And Relational Well-Being., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Michelle Drouin

Health Services and Informatics Research

The current abundance of technology in daily life creates opportunities for interruptions in couple interactions, termed technoference or phubbing. The current study examined reports from both partners in 173 romantic relationships who completed daily surveys on technoference and relational well-being measures across 14 days. By using daily diary data, we were able to examine within-person associations and more closely approximate everyday life. Utilizing multilevel modeling, we found that on days when participants rated more technoference than usual, they felt worse about their relationship, perceived more conflict over technology use, rated their face-toface interactions as less positive, and experienced more negative …

Visualization Of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Data For Older Adults Using Participatory Design., Ryan Ahmed, Tammy Toscos Phd, Romisa Rohani Ghahari, Richard J Holden, Elizabeth Martin, Shauna Wagner, Carly Daley, Amanda Coupe, Michael Mirro Md Aug 2019

Visualization Of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Data For Older Adults Using Participatory Design., Ryan Ahmed, Tammy Toscos Phd, Romisa Rohani Ghahari, Richard J Holden, Elizabeth Martin, Shauna Wagner, Carly Daley, Amanda Coupe, Michael Mirro Md

Health Services and Informatics Research

Patients with heart failure (HF) are commonly implanted with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices as part of their treatment. Presently, they cannot directly access the remote monitoring (RM) data generated from these devices, representing a missed opportunity for increased knowledge and engagement in care. However, electronic health data sharing can create information overload issues for both clinicians and patients, and some older patients may not be comfortable using the technology (i.e., computers and smartphones) necessary to access this data. To mitigate these problems, patients can be directly involved in the creation of data visualization tailored to their preferences and needs, …

Selection Biases In Technology-Based Intervention Research: Patients' Technology Use Relates To Both Demographic And Health-Related Inequities., Tammy Toscos Phd, Michelle Drouin, Jessica Pater, Mindy Flanagan, Rachel Pfafman, Michael Mirro Md, Facc, Fhrs, Faha

Health Services and Informatics Research

OBJECTIVE: Researchers conduct studies with selection biases, which may limit generalizability and outcomes of intervention research. In this methodological reflection, we examined demographic and health characteristics of implantable cardioverter defibrillator patients who were excluded from an informatics intervention due to lack of access to a computer and/or the internet.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using information gathered from surveys and electronic health records, we compared the intervention group to excluded patients on demographic factors, computer skills, patient activation, and medical history.

RESULTS: Excluded patients were older, less educated, less engaged and activated in their health, and had worse health (ie, more medical …

Audience Response Systems And Missingness Trends: Using Interactive Polling Systems To Gather Sensitive Health Information From Youth., Tammy Toscos, Michelle Drouin, Mindy Flanagan, Maria D. Carpenter, Connie Kerrigan, Colleen Carpenter, Cameron Mere Mba, Marcia Haaff

Health Services and Informatics Research

BACKGROUND: The widespread availability and cost-effectiveness of new-wave software-based audience response systems (ARSs) have expanded the possibilities of collecting health data from hard-to-reach populations, including youth. However, with all survey methods, biases in the data may exist because of participant nonresponse.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to (1) examine the extent to which an ARS could be used to gather health information from youths within a large-group school setting and (2) examine individual- and survey-level response biases stemming from this Web-based data collection method.

METHODS: We used an ARS to deliver a mental health survey to 3418 youths …

Health Services and Informatics Research

BACKGROUND: High rates of mental illness, stress, and suicidality among teens constitute a major public health concern in the United States. However, treatment rates remain low, partially because of barriers that could be mitigated with tech-based telemental health (TMH) resources, separate from or in addition to traditional care.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze TMH resource usage by high school students to establish current user characteristics and provide a framework for future development.

METHODS: A total of 2789 students were surveyed regarding demographics, recent anxiety and depression symptoms, suicidality, and stress; people with whom they could openly and honestly discuss …

Mirro Center Articles

ABSTRACT: Eating disorders (EDs) are a worldwide public health concern that impact approximately 10% of the U.S. population. Our previous research characterized these behaviors across online spaces. These characterizations have used clinical terminology, and their lexical variants, to identify ED content online. However, previous HCI research on EDs (including our own) suffers from a lack of gender and cultural diversity. In this paper, we designed a follow-up study of online ED characterizations, extending our previous methodologies to focus specifically on male/masculine-related content. We highlight the similarities and differences found in the terminology utilized and media archetypes associated with the social …

The Protective Influence Of Relationship Commitment On The Effects Of Facebook Addiction On Marital Disaffection, Irum Saeed Abbasi, Michelle Drouin, Jayson L. Dibble, Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd

Health Services and Informatics Research

ABSTRACT Previous research has suggested that Facebook use can lead to adverse romantic relationship outcomes due to interpersonal conflicts, interactions with potential romantic alternatives, and jealousy. However, these associations have been explored mainly with undergraduates, focusing primarily on conflict rather than emotional disengagement. The current study examined the associations between Facebook addiction and marital disaffection (e.g., loss of love, emotional disengagement) amongst 138 (95 females and 43 males) cohabiting married Facebook users residing in the United States. The results revealed that Facebook addiction and marital disaffection were positively related, even after controlling for relationship commitment. Additionally, greater relationship commitment weakened …

Cross-Day Influences Between Couple Closeness And Coparenting Support Among New Parents., Yunying Le, Steffany J Fredman, Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Jean-Philippe Laurenceau, Mark E Feinberg

Health Services and Informatics Research

The couple and coparenting relationships are demonstrated to be prospectively and bidirectionally associated over months to years during the early parenting years. However, little is known about these associations at the daily level within the first year of parenthood, when coparenting first emerges. The goal of the current study was to examine the association between couples' daily feelings of relationship closeness and coparenting support in first-time parents and determine directionality of these effects using a dyadic daily diary design. At 10 months postpartum, heterosexual couples (
