A Com Parison Of Classical And Quantum Implement Ations Of A Random Number Generator: An Introduction To Quantum Computing, Charlotte Coffin Dec 2018

A Com Parison Of Classical And Quantum Implement Ations Of A Random Number Generator: An Introduction To Quantum Computing, Charlotte Coffin

Honors College Theses

Quantum computers have potential to contribute to advancements in many disciplines including chemistry, material science, and artificial intelligence. As quantum computers become more accessible, there is a greater need for people to understand quantum computation to spearhead such advancements. This thesis discusses the basics of quantum computing, including fundamental concepts and a literature review. In order to demonstrate how quantum computation works, a random number generator is implemented on a quantum computer simulator and compared to a random number generator implemented on a classical computer. The results of the two experiments are compared. The results show that a quantum random …

The Oversexualization Of Latinas In Us Contemporary Film, Olivia Juliet Taylor Dec 2018

The Oversexualization Of Latinas In Us Contemporary Film, Olivia Juliet Taylor

Honors College Theses

Diversity has always been an issue for women and people of color in media. Likewise, a lack of representation has also been a consistent issue, with this misrepresentation occurring more frequently to certain groups. In this thesis, I look at the role of the Latina by employing a content analysis of Latinas’ roles in both contemporary US indie and blockbuster films, while utilizing an intersectional feminist framework. The main goal of this research was to recognize if indie films offer greater representation for Latinas over blockbusters. Four films were analyzed to draw conclusions about how Latinas in US contemporary films …

Pennsylvania Gas: Trusts, Takings, And Judicial Temperaments, Joshua Ulan Galperin Nov 2018

Pennsylvania Gas: Trusts, Takings, And Judicial Temperaments, Joshua Ulan Galperin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Perhaps it is their role in our survival, or our economic growth, or the environment. Whatever the reason, energy and natural resource conflicts seems to be unique in the way they can drive significant doctrinal change even outside of energy and natural resource law. Pennsylvania has been a fountainhead of these conflicts. In 1921, Pennsylvania’s Kohler Act and lesser known Fowler Act, which sought to protect surface owners from anthracite coal mine subsidence and to increase tax revenue from anthracite mining, ignited the legal wrangling that eventually led to Pennsylvania Coal Co. v. Mahon. That U.S. Supreme Court decision transformed …

Life Cycle Costing And Food Systems: Concepts, Trends, And Challenges Of Impact Valuation, Jason J. Czarnezki Oct 2018

Life Cycle Costing And Food Systems: Concepts, Trends, And Challenges Of Impact Valuation, Jason J. Czarnezki

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Our global food systems create pervasive environmental, social, and health impacts. Impact valuation is an emerging concept that aims to quantify all environmental, social, and health costs of food systems in an attempt to make the true cost of food more transparent. It also is designed to facilitate the transformation of global food systems. The concept of impact valuation is emerging at the same time as, and partly as a response to, calls for the development of legal mechanisms to address environmental, social, and health concerns. Information has long been understood both as a necessary precursor for regulation and as …

Shadowing Lenders And Consumers: The Rise, Regulation, And Risks Of Non-Banks, Shelby D. Green Sep 2018

Shadowing Lenders And Consumers: The Rise, Regulation, And Risks Of Non-Banks, Shelby D. Green

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Since the financial crisis of 2008, “shadow banking” or financial transactions by “non-banks,” has skyrocketed. Non-banks are not depositary institutions and as such, they roam free, largely outside the purview of the bank regulators. They occupy all parts of the credit markets, from mortgage loan origination to payday lenders. Untethered, they operate without government guarantees, such as deposit insurance and have no access to emergency government lending facilities, such as the Federal Reserve's discount window.

There are both positives and negatives in the rise of non-banks. On the positive side is market liquidity and greater diversity of funding sources for …

How Do Financial Institutions In China Mitigate Risks In Securitization Markets?, Tiantian Lyu Aug 2018

How Do Financial Institutions In China Mitigate Risks In Securitization Markets?, Tiantian Lyu

Honors College Theses

Asset securitization as the essential financial tool has increased the liquidity of underlying assets and promoted rapid economic development. In 2008, the outbreak of Subprime Mortgage Crisis that brought by the collapse of securitization triggered the U.S. securitization market to realize the risks involved in structured financial products, and thus facilitated the development of risk controlling tools. Through the analysis of securitization process, drivers, and credit rating agencies, the study concentrates on the formation of risks and modeling evaluation with evidence in both China and the U.S. markets. Statistical analysis was conducted on Chinese securitized products combining with risk management …

Made Up: A Devised Short Film, Justine Musselman Jul 2018

Made Up: A Devised Short Film, Justine Musselman

Honors College Theses

I've explored and studied the use of devising in theatre, and decided to bring that process to the making of a short film. Devising is the process of an ensemble creating a piece together in a collaborative and creative environment. These devised works start without a final script and are formed through discussion, improvisation. and ensemble exercises. Film is a new medium for devising and allows for unlimited creative opportunity and exploration. My devised short film utilizes dramatic makeup as an artistic device to assist in the storytelling. The narrative focuses on the idea of how we present ourselves publicly …

Nurturing A More Just And Sustainable Food System: The First Year Of Pace Law's Food And Beverage Law Clinic, Jonathan Brown Jul 2018

Nurturing A More Just And Sustainable Food System: The First Year Of Pace Law's Food And Beverage Law Clinic, Jonathan Brown

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article looks back at the Clinic's first year and explores lessons learned in putting the theory behind the Clinic's model into practice. Launching the Clinic required a leap of faith. Was there in fact a client demand for its services? Was there sufficient interest from law students in the intersection of transactional law and food systems? Was the scope of legal matters too broad? Was the client focus too narrow? The early returns from the first year have given us valuable insights and experience from which to draw. First, this article discusses the unmet legal need the Clinic seeks …

How Has The Food Industry Manipulated The Way Consumers Perceive Food And Health?, Angelina Garavente Jul 2018

How Has The Food Industry Manipulated The Way Consumers Perceive Food And Health?, Angelina Garavente

Honors College Theses

Food is the most advertised commodity in the United States and food corporations spend on average over $36 billion a year on marketing and advertising (Albritton 172). Seventy percent of total advertising goes to market convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, desserts and alcohol (Albritton 172). As a result of the wide range of marketing on an even wider range of products, consumers have been taught to feel they have a considerable amount of choice. Ironically despite the array of brand-name commodities that give off this impression, only a few giant corporations control much of what is being offered.

Microfinance, Msmes And The Macro Economy: Evidence From India, Monica Casabona Jul 2018

Microfinance, Msmes And The Macro Economy: Evidence From India, Monica Casabona

Honors College Theses

Much of prior literature on the relationship between microfinance and the macro-economy has focused on the effect of the latter in determining the success of microfinance institutions (MFIs). However, the microfinance industry has been underserved in studies evaluating microfinance as a legitimate contributor toward macro-economic growth. Researching this connection would provide a clearer direction for policymakers to support microfinance, and the institutions that foster such activities. This paper investigates the hypothesis that microfinance is not only important to the people at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid, but for the overall health of a national economy. We explore different mechanisms …

Radical Joy Performed Into Action: A Study Of Feminist Performance Art, Kaylee Simonson Jul 2018

Radical Joy Performed Into Action: A Study Of Feminist Performance Art, Kaylee Simonson

Honors College Theses

Although traditionally excluded from the art world as from all major institutions, women artists staked their claim by revolutionizing performance art as a medium in the 1960s and 70s. By integrating life and art, feminist artists developed the powerful ideology that “the personal is political,” especially in art. From this foundation of radical assertion, feminist artists explored, resisted, and deconstructed their struggles. Contemporary feminist artists not only have different battles to fight, they fight them in a different format: digital media. In this project, I seek to explore the ways performance artists before me have used the medium of performance …

The Impact Of Remittances On Education Attainment: Evidence From Dominican Republic, Tahiya Begum Jul 2018

The Impact Of Remittances On Education Attainment: Evidence From Dominican Republic, Tahiya Begum

Honors College Theses

This paper will examine the relationship between remittances and education attainment focusing on Dominican Republic in 2002. This study will focus on households in Dominican Republic using surveys from IPUMS international and the data is cross-sectional. Sending remittances increases the income for households, which in return, influences the spending on education. The study of remittances is analyzed in a more cultural and social value rather than entirely economic. The dynamic and structure of a family is crucial when studying the effects of remittances in a developing country. Key findings from this analysis is that the relationship between education attainment and …

Dadless: Dead Dads In Hamlet And The Effects On Their Children, Erin Diiorio Jul 2018

Dadless: Dead Dads In Hamlet And The Effects On Their Children, Erin Diiorio

Honors College Theses

This research is a close look at the methods of grief as depicted by the children who lose their fathers in William Shakespeare's classic Hamlet.. The goal is to track each child's reaction to the sudden bereavement in a variety of physical and emotional manifestations. This has been done by first examining current literature on the text, followed by a review of historical context of the period in which the play was written, and finally analyzing each character's behavior. In doing so, this research seeks to highlight the importance of the presence of fathers within Hamlet and provide insight as …

Collaboration In Musical Theatre Writing, John Coyne Jul 2018

Collaboration In Musical Theatre Writing, John Coyne

Honors College Theses

Good musical theatre writing is generally assessed by how intentional it is in telling its story. Since it is a very difficult thing to tell a story using music, writers must exercise extreme caution in allowing a story to unfold in an effective, economic way. Recently, there has been a trend in theatre for projects to be developed in a way that utilizes less time of writers sitting alone in a room, and more of material being developed on its feet. Devised theatre, as it is often called, is anathema to the traditional practices of musical theatre writing. The results …

Text Or Call?: How Mode Of Communication Impacts Desire For Subsequent Conversation, Rosemary Leo Jul 2018

Text Or Call?: How Mode Of Communication Impacts Desire For Subsequent Conversation, Rosemary Leo

Honors College Theses

Previous research has found that there is variability in the effectiveness of different types of digitally facilitated communication, but no research has been conducted on whether the mode of communication being used impacts the desire to engage in subsequent conversations with a particular individual. This study examined whether the mode of initial communication would have an impact upon the desire to engage in subsequent conversations. In a sample of 33 participants ages 18-22, I sought to examine how phone conversations and texting differ as methods of initial communication in regard to their impact on participants’ expressed desire for continued communication. …

The Cost Of Success: The Significance Of Funding In The Academic Success Of Charter Schools' Minority Students, Rebecca Charles Jul 2018

The Cost Of Success: The Significance Of Funding In The Academic Success Of Charter Schools' Minority Students, Rebecca Charles

Honors College Theses

Since the state of Minnesota first began charter schools nearly three decades ago, they have slowly become a major part of public education throughout the United States. Often times strategically placed in communities of low socioeconomic status, charter schools have offered alternative options to at-risk, low-income students who would otherwise attend the traditional public school within their school zones. In New York City today, there are almost four times the number of charter schools than there were ten years ago. Across the city, at-risk students who have the opportunity to attend charter schools are reaching higher levels of educational achievement …

United States Withdrawal From Nafta: Potential Effects On The Domestic Agriculture Sector And In-Market Consumers, Karen Ospina Jul 2018

United States Withdrawal From Nafta: Potential Effects On The Domestic Agriculture Sector And In-Market Consumers, Karen Ospina

Honors College Theses

A United States withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement – a tenant of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign – could significantly reduce job creation and consumer spending in a number of sectors within the U.S. economy. While it remains to be seen whether this proposed exit will occur, economists predict the main industries that will be affected are the automotive, farming, and petrochemical industries. The United States’ current political climate could potentially, negatively impact the farming industry – thus causing the unemployment rate to possibly skyrocket as well as adversely affecting consumer spending. This paper examines the potential …

Satirical Politics And Late-Night Television Ratings, Tanner Johnson Jul 2018

Satirical Politics And Late-Night Television Ratings, Tanner Johnson

Honors College Theses

Since the 2016 Presidential election, it has become increasingly difficult to turn on the television or log onto social media without being informed of everything happening at The White House. This includes late-night television. What once was meant for humorous jokes and celebrity interviews suitable for any pop culture follower has not gotten less funny, but nowadays, the jokes are not always jokes. Satirical news has been around for a long time with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, but as of 2016, the line between fact and fiction cannot be as easily differentiated between as it used …

Fluxus: The Significant Role Of Female Artists, Megan Butcher Jul 2018

Fluxus: The Significant Role Of Female Artists, Megan Butcher

Honors College Theses

The Fluxus movement of the 1960s and early 1970s laid the groundwork for future female artists and performance art as a medium. However, throughout my research, I have found that while there is evidence that female artists played an important role in this art movement, they were often not written about or credited for their contributions. Literature on the subject is also quite limited. Many books and journals only mention the more prominent female artists of Fluxus, leaving the lesser-known female artists difficult to research. The lack of scholarly discussion has led to the inaccurate documentation of the development of …

Swimming With Shoes On, Juliet Mueller Jul 2018

Swimming With Shoes On, Juliet Mueller

Honors College Theses

Swimming With Shoes On is a creative writing thesis containing four short stories all revolving around one central character, Lottie. Each story enters the reader into a different chapter of Lottie's life, and we watch as people move in and out of her life, as she learns more about herself and her friends, as she develops certain understandings about the construction of the world she's living in.

A World Of Apologies, Samantha Hickman Jul 2018

A World Of Apologies, Samantha Hickman

Honors College Theses

A World of Apologies is a music video that was created in order to promote multiculturalism and foreign culture education. Within this video, twelve different languages are showcased to the tune of the world-wide pop music hit “Sorry” by Justin Bieber. The video includes multiple important aspects of culture such as music, language, art, and dance. The video was made in hopes to bring about culture appreciation and to bring people around the world together, especially since the current political and social climate in many countries nowadays are in turmoil. Not only does the video itself speak to this message, …

Redefining The Competitive Dance Indsutry: A Plan For The Dance Competitions Of Tomorrow, Stevie Mack Jul 2018

Redefining The Competitive Dance Indsutry: A Plan For The Dance Competitions Of Tomorrow, Stevie Mack

Honors College Theses

There is an absence of direct focus in the development of a dancer’s education within today’s competitive dance world, as current dance competitions have many holes in providing the proper training and education a young dancer needs. It is clear that dance competitions are for-profit businesses with a focus on making money, but it is time to turn these businesses into opportunities for growth, success, and a place where pure talent can be discovered and then launched into the next generation of professional dancers.

I am a strong believer in education. Therefore, I believe competitive dance should be another form …

Femiliar: An Artistic Exploration Of Feminism Through Comedy, Mesa Story Melton Jul 2018

Femiliar: An Artistic Exploration Of Feminism Through Comedy, Mesa Story Melton

Honors College Theses

This project seeks to examine feminism through the widely accessible means of comedic performance. I have written, created, and acted in a web series that I established for several reasons: namely, to diffuse information about the oppressions that female-identifying individuals face in their everyday life as well as in the larger scheme of existence, but also to attempt to create a community of intersectional communication and collaboration where women can go to express their grievances and inspirations as well as seek comfort for the issues that plague them by nature of their gender identification. The show, Femiliar, is a sketch …

Scripted Stereotypes In Reality Tv, Paulette S. Strauss Jul 2018

Scripted Stereotypes In Reality Tv, Paulette S. Strauss

Honors College Theses

Diversity, or lack thereof, has always been an issue in both television and film for years. But another great issue that ties in with the lack of diversity is misrepresentation, or a substantial presence of stereotypes in media. While stereotypes often are commonplace in scripted television and film, the possibility of stereotypes appearing in a program that claims to be based on reality seems unfitting. It is commonly known that reality television is not completely “unscripted” and is actually molded by producers and editors. While reality television should not consist of stereotypes, they have curiously made their way onto the …

American Tap Dance History And Proposed Preservation, Margaret Miller Jul 2018

American Tap Dance History And Proposed Preservation, Margaret Miller

Honors College Theses

The first form of dance conceived in the United States, tap dance, thrived throughout the era of vaudeville and the movie musical. Today’s society often overlooks tap dance beyond basic or beginner dance education; the history of the art from is even more so neglected. Within these pages, I will address the question of how the history of tap dance can be honored and preserved for generations to come. I feel so grateful to have had a tap mentor that valued the history of tap just as much as the technique and steps. Others in my field may not have …

Tilted: Exploring The Mainstreaming And Diversity Of Modern Drag, Stephen Stanec Jul 2018

Tilted: Exploring The Mainstreaming And Diversity Of Modern Drag, Stephen Stanec

Honors College Theses

The act of presenting oneself to the world around them is a performance. Gender takes a massive part in this “performance” as the “gender roles” that we as humans embody due to preconceived societal constructs shape the world’s perception of us (Butler 92-95). The world’s normality of performing the gender that closely matches one’s sex assignment is not the only option. The long practiced Queer art form of Drag, blurs and changes the lines of gender through performance. This in turn plays with the fluidity in the manmade construct of gender. Drag is a necessary art form within the Queer …

The Tragedy Zone: Ableism In Entertainment, Linnea Sumner Jul 2018

The Tragedy Zone: Ableism In Entertainment, Linnea Sumner

Honors College Theses

Ableism, or discrimination towards individuals with disabilities, is pervasive in our society. The entertainment world and the media are largely responsible for shaping the way the general public views minority groups. The topic of disability is incredibly popular on screen and stage, but very few actors and writers with disabilities are being hired in comparison to the amount of work that is being produced on the topic. A startling percentage of best actor/actress Oscar winners have won for portraying a character with a disability of some kind, but only two actors with the same disabilities as their characters have been …

The Economic Impact Of Failing Infrastructure In The New York Metropolitan Area, Nicholas Travis Jul 2018

The Economic Impact Of Failing Infrastructure In The New York Metropolitan Area, Nicholas Travis

Honors College Theses

Infrastructure in the New York Metropolitan Area has been seriously underfunded due to a failure of public investment on the local, state and federal level. Prior research has presented concrete reasoning that the now crumbling infrastructure will seriously affect economic growth and worker productivity. This research seeks to quantify the economic effects as a result of this failing infrastructure. My research asks: what are the concrete, additional economic expenditures, due to failing infrastructure, that drivers spend each year? How much do these economic costs decrease our economic productivity, and how do the economic costs compare with proposed infrastructure improvements? From …

Tabletop Role-Playing Games And Social Skills In Young Adults, Lily Spinelli Jul 2018

Tabletop Role-Playing Games And Social Skills In Young Adults, Lily Spinelli

Honors College Theses

This paper explores the relationship between playing tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) and the creativity, self-efficacy, and social skills of the players. Eighty-five people ages 18-25 were surveyed on their perceived levels of these three variables, as well as how often they played TTRPGs. Responses of those who did play TTRPGs were compared with results of those who did not play TTRPGs. A statistically significant positive correlation was identified in all participants between creativity and self-efficacy, creativity and social skills, and self-efficacy and social skills. Participants who played TTRPGs scored statistically significantly higher in measures of creativity than participants who did …
