Latin American Identities And The American Demonym, Maia S. Schofield
Latin American Identities And The American Demonym, Maia S. Schofield
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
Current literature addresses the question of Latin American identity largely in terms of assimilation, language proficiency, generation of immigrant, and political participation, while the American demonym remains an understudied topic. ‘America’ has been popularized in its usage to refer only to the United States and ‘American’ to its nationals. Although Latin Americans are natives of the Americas, they are rarely considered ‘American’. This study examines factors that influence the identity of Latin Americans living in the United States and focuses primarily on the connection between identity and the understanding of ‘America’. To examine this relationship, a questionnaire, offered in Spanish …

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
The purpose of this curriculum development project is to help practicing English Language Arts and Social Studies teachers in grade 5 construct and develop content-area curriculums that reinforce and support both critical literacy and social justice pedagogical frameworks for teaching and learning. This particular curriculum development project also addresses the ways in which English Language Arts and Social Studies teachers in grade 5 can use LGBTQ-themed curricular materials to not only promote critical literacy and social justice frameworks for teaching and learning but to also meet the Common Core State Standards (CCSS, 2010) for English Language Arts, Ohio’s Learning Standards …

Cards On The Table: A Practicum Experience Aiming To Bridge The Gap Between Otterbein's Athletes And Mental Health Services, Asha Wallace
Cards On The Table: A Practicum Experience Aiming To Bridge The Gap Between Otterbein's Athletes And Mental Health Services, Asha Wallace
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
The purpose of this practicum was to help bridge the gap between Otterbein’s athletic population and mental health services. Previous research has discussed the potential barriers to student athletes seeking mental health assistance from their institution, including by not limited to lack of time, stigma, education, and negative past experiences. A barrier for receiving care for DIII athletes, specifically, is access. It has been noted that, due to limited resources, Otterbein does not have a mental health professional designated specifically to its athletes. There are, however, a variety of resources both on and around campus that can increase the mental …

Behavioral Health At Nationwide Nationwide Children's Hospital Practicum Experience, Muna Sharif
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
The mission of this practicum experience is to provide the highest quality of care to all children and their families regardless of their ability to pay.
From this experience I was able to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Behavioral Health programs and services at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Additionally, I facilitated the Eating Disorder Intake Process Team Discussion. I attended daily huddles and engaged in discussion while learning from professional leaders. This also included regularly being hands-on in activities and attending all meetings, providing feedback, and debriefing with the site-supervisor.
Type 2 Diabetes And A Plant Based Diet, Adrian Brown
Type 2 Diabetes And A Plant Based Diet, Adrian Brown
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
I was diagnosed as a Type II diabetic a few years ago when I was living in South Korea working as an English teacher. I, like many of the diabetics that I now take care of, said many of the same excuses that they tell me:
Patient: I heard that I might be pre-diabetic.
Nurse: You are on metformin and your morning glucose is in the 180s.
Patient: I’m not diabetic.
Nurse: You have peripheral neuropathy.
Patient: I watch what I eat. I’m ok.
Nurse: You have hypertension high cholesterol and don’t exercise.
I've said all over those things. But …
Ischemic Stroke, Brett Winner
Ischemic Stroke, Brett Winner
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Cerebrovascular accident, or stroke, as it is referred to is a serious neurological event that affects almost 800,000 people in the United States annually, of which approximately 87% is ischemic in nature. Ischemic stroke is mostly caused by atherosclerotic plaques that develop due to endothelial injury in vessels that supply blood flow to the brain. An ischemic stroke can be the result of thrombi breaking off from vessels in the brain, emboli from outside the brain, or small vessel stenosis, all of which occlude a vessel within brain and cause tissue ischemia. When perfusion to portions of the brain is …

Osteoporosis Implications For The Aging Adult, Grace Alford
Osteoporosis Implications For The Aging Adult, Grace Alford
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
This poster describes the pathophysiology, symptoms, implications for care, and treatment of osteoporosis for advanced practice RNs. The research was conducted within health-related databases. The literature review narrowed the search to only include the pathophysiology, interventions, and care for osteoporosis. Literature was restricted to within the past five years. The research showed that osteoporosis reduces mineral density in bones and can be adequately treated within a short amount of time. It is important for nurses and advanced practice providers to be aware of current guidelines, screenings, and treatments for osteoporosis.
Current Management Of Acute Hyperglycemia: Diabetic Ketoacidosis And Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Syndrome, Cary Bedinghaus
Current Management Of Acute Hyperglycemia: Diabetic Ketoacidosis And Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Syndrome, Cary Bedinghaus
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
The purpose of this poster is to review and promulgate current best practices in management of the two forms of hyperglycemic crises: diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome (HHS). Reviews of literature showed large agreement on efficacious protocols in acute hyperglycemic treatment, while also noting wide prevalence of the disorder. Given the high human and financial cost of hyperglycemia, the dissemination of high quality, evidence-based interventions, to the widest possible audience participating in patient care, is imperative. This poster outlines signs and symptoms, basic pathophysiology, and implications for the treatment team with emphasis placed on areas of settled best …
Delirium, Angela Lee
Delirium, Angela Lee
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Delirium is a severe neurocognitive syndrome characterized by acute changes in consciousness and cognition (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Wilson et al., 2020). The syndrome is found to be prevalent within the adult intensive care population resulting from various triggers and stressors in the critical care setting (Wilson et al., 2020). On average, the prevalence of delirium is 23%, but the incidence significantly increases to 50-70% in mechanically ventilated patients (Wilson et al., 2020). As a result of the extension of cognitive deficits, if left untreated, delirium may lead to long-term impairments in cognitive disfunction (Wilson et al., 2020). Current studies …
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Amanda Kleinfelder
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Amanda Kleinfelder
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition caused by damage in the lungs leading to persistent hypoxemia. The alveoli in the lungs become filled with fluid from damage to the pulmonary capillaries due to inflammatory mediators. The buildup of fluid in the lungs ultimately result in intubation of the patient and mechanical ventilation (Senapathi et al., 2020). ARDS has become more prevalent today with the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic affecting 200 countries resulting is 1.1 million deaths so far (Weiss et al., 2021). Multiple therapies exist for the management of ARDS including prone positioning, deep sedation, and mechanical ventilation …
